Novus Cataris conDoin ripped the book to shreds, throwing the scraps of dogma into the fire, the greedy flames gobbling the parchment like orcs to meat. The voices tore within him, telling Cataris secrets, such dark secrets. What was supposed to be an ornate room turned into a madman’s abode, carpet torn and wooden planks splintered. The chair that Cataris sat on was scratched like a cat’s playtoy, varnish faded and legs teetering. All the while Cataris stared into the fire, seeing, hearing, knowing things that only the heavens above should know, yet he had only the shred of humanity needed to feel the pain, the mind-numbing pain. His thoughts darted left and right like a weasel, knowing only to kill, inflict pain on others, and strangely enough, his family.

They’ll all pay, those dogs of Ascended, looking only for them for their daily “prayers”. Like they will answer…I’ll show them all. I don’t care about these orders to stay here; I want to eat something good….like Elven Flesh. He savored the thought, then dismissed it. Too stringy. I like fatty people more, like those Lords in their idiotic keep out there. Mmmm. I can just see the fat rendering down, that delicious heart cooked just like I want it with petra salt and Mushroom Soup. Yum, that would really taste good.  He thought about the savory, coppery taste of human blood to go with the meal, the perfect dinner to end the day. He threw his staff around for some time as he looked out the window , the Aurora Borealis lighting up in the night sky.

Cataris began to think about revenge on those humans for ruining Wrath’s Clutch, plans in his head that no human should have committed. Perhaps I kill the children first? Then ladies? Hm… Seems like those dogs don’t know when to stop breeding, like toadspawn in mating season. I’ll show them, I would if me guild hasn’t been so bloody lazy. Minions, bah! Even the Overlord knows that they’re less useful than a rock. Hm… he retired on his chair, thinking about the delicious human blood he would drink as soon as his orders were given.

A knock disturbed the false tranquility of the room   “It’s me, Gestahl.”

“Enter…”

The door creaked open showing a man garbed simply with a cloak.

“Cataris, we have news. The Overlord is dead. Wrothgar is the new Overlord. We have a message to set out for “that” place.”

Cataris nodded and motioned for Gestahl to leave as he stood up and pulled the staff out of its place above the fireplace. Finally, a new age for the Undead was unraveling between his very eye. Finally, we can bring destruction, death upon this land of ignorant humans. Finally we shall be feared instead of being the talk of fairytales and tavern stories. He could see the soldiers coming, uselessly, to their death as lightning cooked them in their armor. He could see the horrible, monstrous creature killing townspeople with the beautiful red mist of blood. Cataris wickedly smiled as he put on his outer robe and his staff as it was an extension of his arm, its hilt glowing purple with dark magicks.

“Shall we leave Cataris?”

“Yes…we shall. Let us leave; this weather gives me cold feet.”

“Off we go then. Cataris, are you happy now?” Gestahl was annoyed at the fact that Cataris, friend as he was already, was so restless in leaving Winterfell.

“Oh yes. Let us reap the souls of men, as it was in Elvendale.”

“Indeed Cataris. We shall.”

As the winter wind spread white snow across the land, the taint of the Undead flew across the North Wind. Cataris and Gestahl went off, their tracks covered by the pure white snow. In the North, the months have no importance. Winter was everlasting. Oren, however, would soon be experiencing the most destructive season of its history,

Winter was coming, with all its blessings.

And all its disasters.

Chapter 2:

Another fine day for the most elite of the Rangers, the valiant knight in shining armor…to do paperwork.

The office of Ranger Commander Hawk Whitestorm was filled with personal curios, such as an painting plundered from Wrath’s Clutch, a mysterious Ender Pearl, and the sword he once used for his guard duties, now rusted and hanged on the wall as a reminder of what he once was. Hawk sighed as he began to peruse the papers for anything important. Important usually meant reports on petty criminals and bandits during the last two years. Occasionally there was the serial killer or the Iblees Worshipper, but constantly yelling their dark teachings usually got them killed at the nearest sewer.

What worried Hawk the most was the corruption in other guilds. During the past year the reports have steadily gotten worse, especially now with the Teutonic Order stirring the pot with guild conflicts. As a leader of the Oren Military he could not directly support either side of the conflict, but he had no orders stating that he send scouts to survey the conflict. As a result, every day 6 rangers, ranging from new recruits to veterans skilled in the art of camouflage, archery, and general survival skills observed the conflict from a distance, taking notes on size, weapons, armor, groups affiliated, and the strategy that comes with every battle.

He also heard of Undead rumors, saying that they will rise and shake Aegis to its very core, but Hawk was dubious about these rumors. For years, they have not shown their face, and yet they come back? Why? He always looked for any sign, any scrap of the previous monsters that plagued this land, but no signs would appear, the only evidence being the charred remains of villages ravaged by the Undead.

He sighed as the cursive writing of the lords and court mired his thoughts. When would he fight? Back in the old days there were many battles, each of them glorious in their own right. The carnage of war, the maddening influence of bloodlust, and the old friend that he knew as death watching over them.

He missed that. And as he missed that, he continued scribbling on the various pieces of parchment.
