Adorned with several leather pouches, vials, and other trinkets in his knapsack, a hooded figure paced his way through the hard desert winds of the Orcish badlands. The sand felt cold to his feet, with the gusts of wind chilling his body even further. In the distance, the crescent moon rose from the horizon, waving at the departure of the sun.

The orc’s pace increased. He knew that the creatures of twilight spawned as soon as night was at its full; so he had to proceed quickly. The odd charms in his bag and belt pouches jingled as he plodded his way down the rocky dunes.

After what seemed like an eternity, the orc reached an oasis, surrounded by several sandy hills. Long, stretched jungle trees grew among exotic bushes full of orange berries and slippery leaves. The oasis itself seemed to glow under the rising moon, the sands here even slightly warmer.

He sat himself next to the largest jungle tree, resting on his knees. Pulling his knapsack off, he began to dig inside -- he brought out an unlit torch, some squishy green material, and a vial of pure, clear water. He planted the torch on the shore next to him, and molded some of the green material onto the top of it. Next, he lighted it with the swipe of a hot wicker, and soon, a green, heavy smoke rose into the air. He breathed it in deeply, closing his eyes as to envision something.

Then after a few moments, he opened the vial, and let loose a single droplet from the lip onto the torch. With a sudden flare, the green smoke burst into a flurry of even denser smoke, and a figure began to hover above the torch. As the smoke cleared, the orc spoke.

“Takacha. Mi hab summon lat.”

The figure, now like a large serpent made of water, glissed through the air, looking this way and that. It soon looked at the orc, eyeing him with a glare.

“Who are you, aged one? Why have you disssturbed me?”

The orc showed no emotion; he only said, “Don’ lat rememba mi, wize spirut?”

The serpent slithered through the air some more, hissing through the smoke as it contemplated. Finally, it replied, “Yesss, I remember you now. Brrrunhyyldir, my envoy.”

Brunhyldir sighed with relief. “Dis mi, Takacha. Mi kom to tell lat dat me teacha, Lex’Lur, es gun. Mi seek da guidunce frum da spiruts.”

Takacha snarled, doing a loop in the air, as if assessing the orc. He said, “You will underssstand that the spirits are much different than mere inhabitants of your realm, orc. The ssspirit must choose you, as I did.” The serpent settled, now simply hovering above the smoke.

“Den guide me, Takacha. Where du mi go neckst?”

Takacha simply hovered for a moment, not speaking. Brunhyldir waited patiently, and suddenly the serpent sprung to life again. He said, “I see your people have separated... Nuutshara.”

Brunhyldir winced.

“Why do you speak the Blah, asss you do now? Have you returned to your culture, orc?”

Brunhyldir spoke with affirmity, “Yub, mi has.”

The serpent hissed, not angrily, but with surprise. “You remember the tiesss you hold to your people, Brunhyldir. I notice thisss.” He slithered in the air again, saying quickly, “The Fire will tell you more about your future, orc. Seek it out, but do not forgot what you have learned.”

Brunhyldir nodded, “Yub, Takacha. Lat weyl always bi link to mi, mi to lat. Mi nub forgot.”

Takacha had no more words; he simply darted away from Brunhyldir and slithered into the water of the oasis. The pool vibrated in circles after he did, and soon it went still once again.

Brunhyldir closed his fist around the cactus green, sniffing any more smoke that came his way. He placed it in his bag along with his torch, and stood.

“Da fire, eh...”

He walked away from the oasis, his feet plodding in the sand once more.
