At first glance, Bastian Hydrass appears to be the regular, faithful citizen of the Holy Oren Empire. A simple looking young man who tries to keep himself looking smart, with ash blonde hair swept to the side, murky brown eyes and a relatively lean body complexion, indicating a healthy upbringing and lifestyle. Standing at a significant height of five feet eleven, over the average for most Orenians, Bastian’s strength is significant, however it would be more significant if he had trained more. However, looking below the surface, there is a deeper character. Bastian’s personality and past experiences lead him to be fiercely defensive of his faith because he believes that belief and worship of the creator is the key to a good life. This defence can manifest into anger at points if nonbelievers or creatures of other races do not believe the same things that he believes and Bastian will quite happily fight for any force which fights against supposed heretics if he will be fighting alongside believers with similar motives and views.

 

Born as the younger of two children to a well-spoken middle class family, with Tobias Hydrass as his father, a rather imposing man with a caring heart, and his mother, Alice Hydrass in the Ursakar region of the Holy Oren Empire in Asulon, the beginning of Bastian’s life was quite exciting in the changing times and upheaval in the empire. Growing up, Bastian remembers his father as a tax collector for the Noble House Vallark, and because of this, he was hated by many of the jealous inhabitants of Ursakar and the surrounding towns because of his controversial and reviled job, and the fact that Tobias and his young family ate well and grew up healthily whereas they were less fortunate, envying the family as a whole. He was also heckled and insulted by some as he walked down the cobble streets of Ursakar with his sons, the young Bastian and the slightly older Hadrian, however his father was a hardy man who did not let this get to him, this inspired the young Bastian and he began to view his father as an idol and role model as he grew up due to this attitude of not letting things get to him and his resolute attitude.

 

Bastian's strong views and admittedly hatred towards heretics and non believers were shaped because of his experiences in childhood, which shaped Bastian's mind to trust firmly in the fact that a firm belief in the creator and his faith in the One true faith. The main factor of these experiences was the death of his idol of a father at the hands of a disillusioned and angry local who Bastian's father refused to let up on a payment of taxes to the county who then proceeded to stab Bastian’s, this man also happened to be a rumoured heretic who berated the name of the creator, however the tales of his father's resolute last words and actions in the service of the empire, this idealised image of his brave father would stay with Bastian's especially, as well as the destructive seed of hate which was planted when he found out that the man was a rumoured heretic. The man was eventually hanged for his crime but this did not serve as enough of a punishment to Bastian, who believed that the banality of evil belonged with sinners that belittled and berated the words of the One True Faith and its teachings.

 

In his early teenage years, Bastian stayed true to the idealised morals that he thought made his father such a great man, however his father's profession was not really interesting to the action-loving Bastian who admired the brave knights of Oren who he regularly saw defending the land from enemies of the empire, and as well as being inspired by his father's brave morals and ideals, he became inspired by the brave, faithful and noble actions of these fully armoured, faceless bulwarks of the empire, imitating the weapons of the knights he began travelling with a simple to use Iron shortsword for defence. At age sixteen he began training his swordsmanship by humble means, alone, he practiced lunging techniques with the shortsword by filling bags with sand and stringing them up on hooks. Equally, he trained his slashing, slicing techniques and strength by cutting through branches on trees throughout the locality and scarring the tree trunks with slices from the sword. At 17, he had learned and trained all he could from training his styles and techniques on idle targets, looking to join one of the many holy orders scattered throughout the Holy Oren Empire, however before this, the cataclysmic storms his Asulon and his search was postponed.

 

Tragically, on the journey to Anthos, Bastian’s mother and brother both starved to death after being separated from the main bulk of the Orenian exodus, a pitiful death for people who raised and loved Bastian so thoroughly, however Bastian would never find this out and still has no idea what happened to them, all this ensured that when the arrival to Anthos finally came, he was totally alone, however he still had the sword which he had brandished since the beginning of his training, 2 years prior. Arriving in Anthos with with zeal and purpose as to what his wished to do with his life, he found a small home on the outskirts of the city of Kingston, in the Kingdom of Salvus. Living on the edge of Kingston, lately he witnessed numerous heinous acts of violence against so called heretics by the Order of The White Rose. While Bastian is not a brute, and after being repulsed at witnessing the violence to begin with, he began to feel that it was necessary in order for the empire to prosper.
