Question Of The Self Taught Magic Process!

So, quite recently the tome system was replaced by the new...system, I guess? Though to me it was unclear what was meant by demonstrating IC knowledge of whatever magic.

Does this IC Knowledge have to be acquired from Role play at some point in the past or can it be from your character's backstory?

Essentially, I believe it means go out, find a mage who studies the type you want, ask a few dozen questions, and then go learn.

I think, at least...

Roleplay as I'm pretty sure having it in your back story would be metagaming. :p

I think metagaming is using OOC knowledge IC. As in, One of your other characters hears about a raid and this information would be useful to your other character, so you later on use this information to defend against that raid or something as the character who did not actually hear of it.  If your character knows something in his backstory then it's not really metagaming, is it?

I think what he means is if its in your backstory, its knowledge that you gain from the forums and then attempt to justify by saying its part of your backstory. The best bet is gaining IC knowledge. This doesn't have to be asking a Mage a bunch of questions ( although that's probably the most straightforward method), there are plenty of books on magic as well.

Hey, don't be discouraged! Unless I'm mistaken, I'm fairly sure Necromancy is very very hard to self teach. But that doesn't mean you can't Be taught the magic! Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe that necromancy, much like cleric magic, is very order and guild based. Play it right through rp, and you could find yourself in a super secret cult learning necromancy. Good luck

Necromancy can't be self-taught.

Can I get a quote? It doesn't say that anywhere and I've seen several people post on the forums that claim to be self taught necromancers.

Probably. It would make sense, but damn I can't get any information about it except for the guide thread, and even that gives me nothing that which I need to start off.

By that we mean proof of how your character knows about magic, what interested him/her in to it, etc. Anything your character would know about magic, because the problem we had before was that anyone could ask for magic and we had no reason to say no, when most likely ICly they've never even seen or heard of that type of magic before..yeah, etc.

So essentially, my character could have read something that mentioned it, gained an interest and start to pursue it? Because I did have him read something that was kind of a summary of different types of magic. (Necromancy being one of them). I'd need a bit more of an explanation as to how to go about doing it. At what point could a character be able to self teach?

Necromancy is something very hard to be self taught, because no one but those learning from a teacher know how it works, and based on the nature of the magic (dark magic requires the death of others, or torture, etc) no necromancer will speak much of it to anyone, even to their friends. They also keep it hidden and almost don't do the magic, because if they raise the death/curse/taint/etc they will be known as dark mages and hunted down. Dark magic is not something that characters should be seeking to learn, but to destroy, as it is DARK MAGIC. So first all, before anyone would learn necromancy, they would already by first be sure that the character would kill, second that he does not believe an inch on holy or right things to do, and thirdly that he will probably die in search for information on it. Those that known the secrets to necromancy IC are EVIL and will most likely kill any character that asks about it.

Yeah, but my character isn't exactly evil...he just doesn't really /care/ about anyone all that much. He wants knowledge, and he read about necromancy (not nearly enough to try to learn anything about the actual casting of spells) and wants that particular knowledge, if he could ever find it. Though, that seems unlikely lol

Geo, one of the current T5 Necromancers and MAT told me when I was being taught that would take your life because there is no teacher to replenish your life-force while you attempt to handle it, this would effectively kill you in moments.

EDIT: There are some exceptions such as some select ex-undead who are already aware of how necromancy works, and thus they have been allowed to self-teach.
