  1. Seeing as it's riddle time, answer me this: You have 12 bricks. One is a slightly different weight than the other 11 which are exsctly the same. You can only use the scale 3 times. How do you figure out which brick it is?

      Problem is, using the given solution, if the offending brick was actually lighter, your second weighing would balance. I initially solved it the same way, but assumed the offending brick had been lighter, then thought: what if it was heavier? The original logic would fail. Sorry if I'm being a bother...

      Split the pile in 6 and 6, pick the heavier side. Split the heavier side into 3 and 3, pick the heavier side again. Pick any two from the heavier pile and weigh them and from this you can figure out which one it is from the 3 remaining bricks.
