  1. VOL. 1 EDITION. 9 Baruch & Kortrevich Publishing Three Minas per Edition Available in Nauvmarian THE GOLDEN CROW CHRONICLES New Reza, Haense Tov and Yermey, 320 E.S. | Sun’s Smile, 1767 11 pages Written by: Viktor Kortrevich & Sigmar Baruch Published by: B&K Publishing Pg. 1 POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENTS Ekaterinburg Palace- Duma Hall, New Reza Lady Speaker Annaliese Kortrevich sitting in the Speaker’s chair The Royal Duma has officially had a new Speaker appointed after the passing of Lord Henrik Vanir while he was still in office. Sigmar Baruch returned to the role for a term after being named Acting Lord Speaker until a successor could be named. The new Speaker is Marya Annaliese Kortrevich, daughter of Sigmar Joren Baruch and wife to Lord Viktor Kortrevich. Annaliese is the first Lady Speaker, she was chosen after a long process of looking through candidates. Annaliese is expected to rejuvenate the chambers after a few years of the body not producing anything of note, we wish the Madam Speaker the best in her new position. The House of Commons has passed many bills as of late as well as appointing three new judges. Justice Eugene Bracchus, Justice Armande De Falstaff, and Justice Lauritz Christiansen are the newly appointed judges to the Circuit Court, we expect these men to be just and fair in their new positions. The Following acts were passed by the House of Commons in this term so far: The Non-Partisan Courts bill, The Infractions Act, and The Establishment of the Ministry of Education. Two of the three bills pertain to the imperial criminal justice system, putting in systems to make impartial judges and a better system for criminal justice. The last act founds a new ministry within the empire, we can only hope they do not attempt to rewrite history, but tell the hard truth to our future generations. In this decree, there lies three sections that draw up ‘On the Succession, Edict of Preference Primogeniture Succession’ , ‘On Succession Rights’ and ‘On Succession Crisis’ among finally the line of succession list. In this edition of Our newspaper, we’ll be providing a synopsis of what this decree changes and what remains the same. Firstly, as the Dual Monarchy of the two Kingdoms of Hanseti and Ruska, or more commonly referred by the public as the Kingdom of Haense now follows male-preference primogeniture succession (previously the Kingdom followed an absolute agnatic primogeniture succession process), where the eldest son of the reigning monarch is first to inherit the crown, followed by the offspring of the firstborn son and their offspring. In the case that none are born, it then passes to the monarch’s second born son and his offspring, and so on and so forth. If none are to be born, the title then passes to the monarch’s eldest daughter, then the offspring of the daughter, the offspring of the offspring of the daughter, and so on and so forth. In the case where none exist, the title then passes to the monarch’s brother, then the offspring of the brother, the offspring of the offspring of the brother, and so on and so forth. If the case arises where none are born, the title ultimately passes to the monarch’s sister, then the offspring of the sister, the offspring of the offspring of the sister, and so on and so forth. This trend will continue until the last living Barbanov of Bihar, to which it then passed to the Patriarch of the Barbanovs of Alimar. Secondly, the current royal dynasty that finds itself in the Realm of Haense is the Barbanovs of Bihar, descended through King Peter I’s second born son Karl Sigmar, which inherited the throne following the extinction of the elder Andrian line. The family extends its claim from ancestor Emperor Alexander I, son of Emperor Tobias I, legimatized baseborn son of Exalted Sigismund, and henceforth claims to be the direct line of Saint Joren of Paradisius, son of Exalted Horen. Only Barbanov-Bihar descendents of Robert I by blood and in name are afforded the distinct right to succession. Thirdly, should the House of Barbanov-Bihar ever lie extinct in an unfortunate ruling of events, the succession is passed to the House of Barbanov-Alimar. In this instance that the House of Aliamr is incapable, a crisis is officially declared by Royal decree, and the Karovic’s Hand(particularly the Palatine) may call the Karovic Duma to assemble. To those who are ill-educated on what the Karovic Duma is; it is a body of elders within the Karovic household- the total sum of those claiming male-line descent from Carrion within the borders of Haense. By a vote of majority, the elders of each branch of the Karovic household select who shall be considered the Velkipadreil, or Karovic Patriarch, and formally assume the title of King. With everything being thoroughly explained and transcribed in this year’s edition of Our newspaper, this concludes this article regarding the Line of Succession. The actual line of succession list is not to be made public knowledge which is the sole reason why we the writers at B&K Publishing won’t list off those men and women of the Royal household and where they lie on the line of succession. *Excerpted from ‘KARTENEO METREL I KONGZEM HAENZEO’ documentation <link> Pg. 4 ADVERTISEMENT “POETRY IS AN ECHO ASKING A SHADOW TO DANCE.” Katharina's Song If only the swans were as fair as I, They could shatter the moon with their beauty, They could ensnare the mighty lords on high, They could make Kingsguard flee from duty, If only the swans were as fair as I. This is Sir Terrence May’s thoughts on how the House of Commons is functioning: “Reluctance best characterizes my sentiments when the Edict of Reform had outlined the new legislature. For over a quarter of a century, I had worked in the Senate. Our elections then were mandates from our locales, running for office with the vision of working to better our Empire. Since the introduction of the House of Commons, however, I was privately concerned that an ideological bifurcation would foster a divisive atmosphere in the public discourse. I know many still find this problem to be a systematic setback. Since our first sittings as the reformed body, I have observed that there is a tenuous dynamic at work, silently positioned behind a facade of decorum. Competing agendas lay beneath the superficiality of platitudes that both sides work for the "common good." Other issues such as the notion of impeachment have been put into question. I remember when I began impeachment inquiries for the former Secretary of the Treasury, Mister Peter de Sarkozy. The previous Senate had clear restrictions on who could seek office. Now that the council of state and other public figures are not barred, it presents a paradox of integrity for votes such as their own impeachment should they be put into question in the exercise of their office.” “However, I firmly believe that as long as both sides quell the spirit of aggression, a fruitful product can be found in the House of Commons. One of the greatest results of this change was an increased electoral turnout. The civic participation in Oren cannot be stressed enough. Men with conviction who did not have the opportunity to seek office or influence policy before have now been invited to the fore. The arena of public debate has allowed the public to scrutinize. The Commons, though with potential concerns of conflict of interest among members, still has many things to rectify, can be a force for good. The democratization of our policy is an important advancement in Orenian political structures. When a majority is reached, the Orenian public have vested a national interest on one side to implement policy that best improves their future. Above all else, I trust the wisdom of the Orenian people to make this legislature a hall of integrity, trust, honesty, and truth” Pg. 6 ADVERTISEMENT “BUY AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR A LOW LOW COST” Are you a business owner in Haense? ...and are you looking for more business in your small firm? The Church.. It's in an odd state nowadays, rumors of corrupt cardinals, people taking advantage of the holy coffers, the poor not getting their do, what is the truth of it all? Is the church truly in such dark times?” Friar Boniface: “It is indeed, a saddening time we are in, one the Pontiff refuses to acknowledge.” Friar Boniface: “He is unwilling to discuss and debate the things I said in my publications. I was summoned to a curia council under the belief it was to discuss it. But it was not, it was to hand me an admonition, a threat that if I continued to create such writings that he would defrock me.” Sigmar Baruch: “Hm. What are the problems we’re dealing with exactly now? The problems in the Church that the people should be aware of?” Friar Boniface: “Tithes, they are unethical and extortion. Clergymen using their esteemed clerical position to further own political agendas, which is against dogma. Clergymen refusing to assist or even recognize the poor, perform charity and travel to spread the good teachings of GOD. The unwillingness to debate or discuss issues.” Friar Boniface: “The nepotism that is ripe within the curia and their appointments. Cardinal Laurence has stacked the curia with a majority of his cronies, he is, without a doubt., the Pontiff’s successor.” Friar Boniface: “And that is troubling, did I mention that at this council he demanded that I recant my writings to which, naturally, I refused.” Sigmar Baruch: “And Cardinal Laurence, is he involved with church related matters or does his secular positions come first?” Friar Boniface: “His secular comes first, such is evident to any sane clergyman who is not blinded by nepotism and vanity. He does minor church related things enough to keep his position without raising too much of a stink but not enough to fit his position. He will no doubt gloat about how he is an excellent recruiter and has recruited new clergymen but then I ask, what is his true purpose?” Friar Boniface: “I believe it is to have his own following that even if the Pontiff wanted to do anything to him for his failures of his duties, he can not risk Laurence creating a schism with his new clergymen.” Sigmar Baruch: “This corruption and nepotism you speak of, is it rampant throughout the majority of the Church? How can we tell which members of the clergy are truly looking out for the people’s souls rather than themselves? Are there any god hearted priests left or is GOD gone within the Church?” Friar Boniface: “The corruption and nepotism is almost exclusive to the Curia and college of cardinals. There are truly pious clergymen still left however. They are the ones expressing these concerns, the ones who travel the realm daily to spread GOD’s teachings. Ones who perform charity and guide the lost, these are true members of GOD’s church.” continued. . Pg. 8 Sigmar Baruch: “And in your mind is there a way to save the Curia from its wicked way? And if so, what are they? What can we do, what can the church do?” Friar Boniface: “The church can remove those who abuse their clerical position for political gain. Remove tithes, listen to the concern expressed by their fellow clergymen instead of ordering them into silence.” Friar Boniface: “In my writing I urged the Pontiff to introduce some new rules for all clergymen; A clergyman must never live in a palace, mansion or manor but in a poor man’s home or church spire, A clergyman must never adorn rich and expensive attire but adorn wrags and poor materials, A clergyman must never be lax in their duties and should work to provide food for those in need, A clergyman must never sit on a throne or higher than their fellow man and lastly, a clergyman must never plot or scheme against, their fellow man , a clergyman must also swear vows of chastity, poverty and humility.” Friar Boniface: “These rules would bring back some humility and order to our church, it is a start. I proposed these rules but, his Holiness disregarded every one, saying I am heterodox and a Darfeyist.” Friar Boniface: “Do these sound like such harsh rules for all clergymen to follow? I do not believe so for why should simply servants of almighty GOD require expensive silks, a palace to sleep in or great amounts of wealth. None of that is required to do your duty to the church, if a clergyman needs these things then they prove themselves vain and unfit to hold their clerical position to the church.” Sigmar Baruch: “Mhm. And if these changes do not come, what do you believe will happen to our Mother Church?” Friar Boniface: “It will fall into a deep decline in faithfulness. If we allow the church to fall into such a state of disrepair then we ourselves will be condemned to the void.” Sigmar Baruch: “That would be a sad fate indeed. It is clear to me, that the Church is in much need of GOD to save it from itself. Viktor, any question of your own to ask?” Viktor Kortrevich: “No, I think that about covers it.” Sigmar Baruch: “Anything you’d like to add Father?” Friar Boniface: “I hope that I can continue my work in bettering the church and serving GOD’s faithful and I pray to almighty GOD that his High Pontiff does not defrock me for pursuing what is right.” Sigmar Baruch: “Indeed. I hope the same. Thank you for conducting this conversation with us both, and thank you and all the other priests who are still trying to keep faith alive in these troubling times. I am sure you’ll be rewarded in the Seven Skies.” Friar Boniface: “I can only pray. GOD bless, thank you for having me.” Sigmar Baruch: “Not a problem, if you ever wish to write a piece or want another interview just ask, I am sure we can work something out.” Viktor Kortrevich: “GOD bless, Father.” Friar Boniface: “Thank you.” @ReveredOwl <link> Pg. 9 ADVERTISEMENT “BUY AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR A LOW LOW COST” Are you a business owner in Haense? ...and are you looking for more business in your small firm? Lukas was the second son of the late Britannus Vanir and brother to the popular Fiske Vanir the Bloody, veteran and general of the Riga War, who he often found himself in his shadow. Following an impeccable career as maer and bureaucrat during the Johannesburg Refugee Crisis of the 150s, he came to rise quickly amongst the struggling royalists following the collapse of Karl-Sigmar’s government and an eventual candidate as palatine. A strict centralist, he would spend a majority of his time in office pushing policies that furthered the central government’s authority while slowly revoking the power of the nobility. Lukas proved successful domestically, though militarily the army remained under staunch Sergeyist sympathizers, including former palatine Heinrik Kovachev and his cousin Andrik Kovachev, and rebuffed most efforts of reform. The military therefore remained split two-ways between a royalist sector led by Prince Karl-Sigmar and his eldest son Prince Stefan Bihar and the private armies of the feudal estates, led in weak alliance between the powerful Haeseni clans such as the Kovachevs, Vanirs, Rutherns, and Brawms. Lukas would lead a successful war against a short rebellion by the Brawm family in 153, and after early victories, his government grew more emboldened against the expansionist Curonians of the Coalition War-era. The divided army, however, proved ineffective as time loomed on, and after a few major losses in the east and west respectively, the royalist government of Marus I fled into exile. Lukas followed the government with, and remained in Mardon till the king’s death and Lukas’ expiration of post, where he followed Stefan to the Second Battle of the Rothswald, succumbing to injuries sustained in the victorious fight. *Excerpted from ‘Haeseni People’ documentation *Excerpted from ‘Lord Palatine’s of Haense’ documentation <link> <link> @Pureimp10 Editor's Note: In the Next Edition. It stands for not forgetting where we came from and how we got here.” Sigmar Baruch: What makes you stand out/different from the Josephite Party Ed Myre: “Take a look at our list I would say. In the Palatine’s Address of 1764, Duke Petyr updated the citizens on the ongoings of Haense, such as the Wickwald expansion, the reformation of the H.R.A, and the fight against bandits. Soon after the address, the efforts of the Palatine along with the Lord Marshall led to the expulsion of a large part of the bandit horde. Great things are expected to come from the young Lord Palatine especially after exterminating the bandit threat, the authors have much faith in Duke Baruch and the prosperous future that lies ahead for the Kingdom of Haense. The Basilica of the Fifty Virgins, Haense The Funeral Procession of the Late Prince, Otto Sigmar While we congratulate the new Lord Palatine, we also continue to mourn the loss of the late Prince and Palatine, Otto Sigmar Alimar. Otto Sigmar has served this nation faithfully since before the start of the War of the Two Emperors in 1715. I, Sigmar Baruch remember the three Alimar brothers when they were just starting out, they were honourable men, who I can only praise. Prince Otto was a column of strength, fortitude, and resiliency, and his wisdom and determination will be greatly missed. May he be welcomed into the Seven Skies by his loved ones with ease. There is a soldier, breathing his final breath, The cries for mercy he screams out to his lord: The curses that he may come to know death, The hand a-gripped upon his holy sword. When his father passed from an attack by a coalition of Dwarves, Orcs, and Tuetons defending Vekaro, the human capital in the early Fringe, Tarcell was thrust into the ducal seat. At the time, the defense of the human realm was precarious due to infighting and attacks from other races. Tarcell dissolved the Duchy of Valles and commissioned himself and his men into the newly formed Imperial Army led by Vibius de Sola. Tarcell spent his early years as a disciplinary in the Imperial Army. He earned renown for his defense of the Imperial family during the Great Fringe Plague. When the descendents traversed to Athera, Tarcell met a young man by the name of Aleksandr Carrion who led a township called Karovia. While Aleksandr would go on to become Emperor, Tarcell’s journey would take him elsewhere. He would take a handful of men and settle the Northern lands which were mainly occupied by the Dwarves of Urguan. For many years, Tarcell and his men lived their lives there until a man by the name of Karl Barbanov approached him one day. Karl had the idea of uniting the North under human rule once more and converting the many peoples to Canonism. Down the hill from Tarcell’s land lay a Dwarven fortress named Heibenhall. The two, with the help of the Vladov family, set to work by conquering the fortress and taking it as their own. It was there that they began the settlement of Siegrad which would become the first capital of Haense. While Karl would go on to become the Duke of Haense, Tarcell would lead its military and form the Brotherhood of the Golden Crow. The Brotherhood of the Golden Crow experienced much success. It was based on the structure of the Imperial Army mixed with Northern traditions and ideals. With Tarcell at its head, the Brotherhood of the Golden Crow would go on to conquer and convert the entire northern region and unite it under Haense. At the end of the days on Athera came the Great Wyrm Attack, Karl Barbanov died protecting the retreat and escape of the Haense people. The last thing Tarcell saw of his liege and friend was a bright flash as Karl detonated the explosives he carried to kill the great beast. As the refuge Haense people sailed to a new land, they would find themselves lost and worried without their liege. With their liege dead, the Empire had bigger concerns than those of the Haensic refugees. Tarcell managed to settle them on a piece of land in the Northern Wastes far from any roads or civilization. Despite these dire circumstances, the Brotherhood of the Golden Crow continued to thrive on its own. Its loyal and dedicated officers and enlisted soldiers gave the moral to the disheartened Northern folk to push on despite the poor circumstances. To the South, tensions brewed between Adria and the Imperial capital. When Vladovs, who were considered dear friends of the Haensemen, were insulted by the Imperial capital, Tarcell was infuriated. He marched his army south and demanded a meeting with the de Solas, the family that he once served in the Imperial Army that had spat on his friends. Rather than an apology, the de Solas met him with insults. Tarcell would utter the famous lines ‘The Vladovs send their regards’ before plunging his blade into the heir of the de Sola house. A slaughter known as the de Sola Massacre commenced in which the Brotherhood massacred any living members of the family in the keep. This act officially commenced the Duke’s War. Tarcell and his men would march many leagues South for each battle to deliver victory. However, they were too isolated for much of the main fighting, and the tide of battle began to turn against them. Tarcell perished at the end of the Duke’s War when he was captured by Imperial troops after a meeting in Adria. Despite the fall of their leader, the remains of the Brotherhood of the Golden Crow vowed to avenge Tarcell’s death. In a heroic last stand, the Brotherhood of the Golden Crow perished fighting against the united strength of the Empire in their keep far to the North. A reminder of the fortitude of the people of Haense to this day. ((*Excerpted from the mind of Eddy)) @Eddywilson2 Editor's Note: In the Next Edition. Nikolaus sat amply in his armchair at the Kortrevich Estate in Markev; where he would be reading a copy of the ‘A Proclamation of the Resolute Realm’ by the acclaimed Alistar Wailer of St. Karlsburg. His wife Lotte sitting to his right-side as she knitted cloth garments. Before long, Otto’s assent was made aware to those closest to him who waited for his arrival for many years. Not too long after, Otto made his final sendoff from the war-torn realm of Arcas, Nikolaus would soon gather word that his last day arrived and that his life on the overworld was no longer. Upon this news, Nikolaus closed the leather back text and reminisced on the past triumphs and sorrows both he and Otto shared on the battlefield as fellow war-compatriots. He recalled the time they both spent fighting in the ‘War of the Two Emperors’ through till the 'Battle of Hangman’s Bridge' at the decennial anniversary of the everlasting Rubern War. He recalled the time of the past where he allowed Otto to specifically train Wilheim to be a squire under his own directive. He recalled the time of the past where they together commanded the Battles of Upper & Lower Rodenburg, the Sieges of Helena & Guise and the frequent amount of defenses against the cities of Reza and New Reza against attacking ruthless brigands. While Nikolaus recalled the years they had shared together on the battlefield they too shared a personal connection like many other brothers in arms; although it was one that wasn’t well-illustrated. Their relation was primarily associated with their cohesive discussion regarding the Knightly functions and for a period of time, Otto and Nikolaus closely cooperated together up until the ultimate sacrifice Nikolaus made to his country. Nikolaus soon after his recollection of past memories would greet Otto with a large embrace; the embrace was neither long nor short as their friendship was nothing to be remembered but nevertheless Nikolaus dipped his head briefly and offered just a few words before assisting him to the skies above: “Come Your Highness, we’ve been waiting.”
  5. Ser Nikolaus Kortrevich gives a thumbs up from the skies above!
  6. WRIT OF DISOWNMENT, 1763 Issued by Viktor Kortrevich upon the 9th of Msitza and Dargund, 316 E.S. TO THE REALM OF HAENSE & HUMANITY I, Viktor Kortrevich, patriarch of the House of Kortrevich, declare that Ivan Kortrevich is hereby stripped of the noble name of Kortrevich from this day forth, thereby annulling all of his claims to my name, titles, and my bloodline. All of his offspring shall be deemed bastards and illegitimate. And so I promulgate the following decrees, Ivan Kortrevich shall no longer bear the name of Kortrevich nor hold claim to my blood. All of his offspring shall, too, be considered bastards without the right to bear my name. This has been issued for the following reasons; I. Disobedience to his liege lord. II. Public exhibit of poor mannerisms. III. Preceding accounts of immaturity. IV. Disenfranchised by former-liege lord for; A. Constant Harassment of his fellow family members. B. Inability to manage his own emotions appropriately, causing outbursts of rage and crude behavior. C. Defamation of the Vanir Patriarch, publicly. With great satisfaction I retain when writing this order, I expect that the prosperity of the House of Kortrevich will leap forward to greater and farther lengths as we now formally recognize Ivan as an illegitimate being from our Household. From this day forward, Ivan will no longer bring dishonor to our esteemed house. TRANSCRIPT * Transcribed by Ellizaveta Viktor: “Take a seat, Ivan.” he’d gesture before taking a seat himself. Ivan walks up to him: “You wanted to see me cozaer?” Ivan takes a seat. Viktor: “I’ve come to discuss your marriage with Angelika; the disowned.” he rested his elbows onto the table as he straightened his posture. Ivan nodded: “Alright. What of it?” Viktor: “I’m interested on why specifically she was casted away from the Vanir heritage by Lord Vanir.” Viktor: “I have yet to speak with Lord Vanir regarding such so I’ve come to ask you if you know the specific reasons so I can garner a better understanding from your view.” Ivan: “Well Lord Henrik’s reasons were vague but clear. Angelika has not met up to his standards and has therefore been a disappointment in his eyes. That was about all he said.” Ivan: “Oh, and one more thing I recall now.” Viktor: “Go on.” Ivan: “He also said it’s because of the opinions of other Nobles about her and her habits of crying, which I can admit to being an issue.” Viktor: “Is that all you can recall?” he inquired as he relaxed back into his chair. Ivan sat up straight as he nodded his head: “Da. That is all I can remember from that day.” Viktor: “Very well.” he sighed. “Being that Angelika is not present I ask you to speak on her behalf, what name does Angelika seek to adopt being that she holds no claim to the Vanir name anymore?” Ivan: “Well if you think she wants to become a Kortrevich then no, not really. She’s mainly gone for different alternatives. She’s even suggested making her own surname but I told her how difficult that can be.” Viktor: “I made no such remarks, Ivan.” he chuckled before quickly returning to a fixated expression. “Being that the two of you are married, I suspect you two both seek to share the same surname, is that correct?” Ivan: “Niet. I don’t want to share a name if she decides to create her own surname. If it is alright with you, I wish to have the name of which I was born as.” Ivan: “I know this is a big decision and I have done more than enough for this offer to be rejected as for my actions in the past.” Viktor fixed his posture yet again as he placed his hands over each other: “May I ask one thing, Ivan?” Ivan nodded: “Of course, cozaer.” Viktor: “Your love with Angelika is eternal, da?” Ivan: “Till death do us part is what we vowed on our wedding day.” Ivan: “So da.” Viktor: “If that’s the case, Ivan. Does your allegiance to the name you were born with outweigh the marriage between you and your wife?” he lifted an idle finger slightly. “Answer honestly, Ivan, as the next question I seek to ask will determine one of two things..” Ivan would pause for a moment as he thought about it for a moment before sighing as he spoke: “I love my family. That being both the first one I had and the one that I have raised. But I have children now and I would never rip apart my family. So I suppose I do value my marriage. What kind of knight, husband or man would I be if I didn’t?” Ivan: “However.” he’d add. Ivan: “If she were to break her vows that she made to GOD or if god forbid she were treasonous, then I would value my kin first.” Ivan: “But she is neither an adultress or a traitor, so it is my marriage I value.” Viktor looked to Ivan briefly before pulling out from under a written document without a signature: “Da, what kind of knight, husband or man would you be if you didn’t.” he repeated. “So, Ivan. I have a question I’m required to ask you.” he inhaled, continuing on. Ivan nodded: “What is it?” Viktor: “For as long as Angelika upholds those vows you and her swore to uphold and that marriage remains upright; she will inherently always be connected to you and in return to this very Household.” Viktor: “With her actions speaking for themselves as she herself got disowned I ask you now; one question. You remain loyal to that of your wife and I sign this disownment order or you annul the marriage and leave your children without a father and retain the name you were born with.” Viktor sighed as he relaxed his shoulders: “Think wisely as this order now sits without a penned signature of mine.” Viktor: “This order brings me no sense of satisfaction but it is required of me as the patriarch of this very House to uphold its prestige and honor it holds.” Viktor: “Either you choose to remain loyal to your Household and leave your wife and children without a father and husband or you relinquish claim to this House and you provide for the family you have now begun raising.” Ivan sighs as he knows what he must do but would struggle to say it. He would exhale deeply before he came to his decision: “For my entire life I have been raised mainly by a mother, and even then that was rare. Now I am a Knight and I have accomplished what seemed to be my life goal. Even as I took the Vanir name, I have always still considered myself as a Kortrevich. But between my childhood and me being Knighted, I have missed out on advice that only a father can bring. I would surely condemn myself to the deepest and darkest corner of the void if I were to leave my family. With that being said, I would sign that document myself in order to stay as a father to my children. Because there is no worse fate than to become my sad excuse of a father.” Viktor: “Very well, Ivan. You have most definitely matured in recent years- I’m pleased you are well-willing to accept what it is you have to do while keeping the best interests of your wife and children and that of your family you were born into in mind.” Viktor took hold of the document as he placed it in front of him; before signing it in full. Ivan would nod: “With Duty, Comes Honor.” he said as he states his house words for the last time. Viktor: “Your decision is honorable and sensible, Ivan. I’m most glad you were able to come to your senses and acknowledge this is best suited for not only our House but the family you seek to raise.” Ivan: “It was one that weighed heavily and is one of the hardest I’ve had to make and will most likely stay so for the rest of my life. But I would do it over and over for my wife and children.” Viktor: “Da, a decision I would’ve made if I were in your position.” he stated solemnly. “With that being stated, Ivan. Allow me to read over this document in its entirety once more in my study.” Ivan rises: “Of course.” Viktor’s attention darted between Ivan and the door: “You may show yourself out.” Ivan nodded as he left the halls of Korstadt. WITH DUTY, COMES HONOR, THE MOST HONORABLE, Lord Viktor Otto Kortrevich, Margrave of Korstadt, Baron of Koravia. HIS LORDSHIP, Ser Ivan Robert, Knight of the Order of the Crow
  7. VOL. 1 EDITION. 5 Baruch & Kortrevich Publishing Three Minas per Edition Available in Nauvmarian THE GOLDEN CROW CHRONICLES New Reza, Haense Tov and Yermey, 316 E.S. | Sun’s Smile, 1763 10 pages Written by: Viktor Kortrevich & Sigmar Baruch Published by: B&K Publishing Pg. 1 UPDATE ON LORD MAER’S TENURE IN OFFICE The Coat of Arms of the City of New Reza At the time of this publishing, the incumbent Lord Maer Stefan Vyronov has been in office for two years. The Royal City of New Reza has been revitalized with life as a plethora of events have taken place during the Lord Maer’s tenure. Although, none of these affairs were assembled specifically by his administration. With this in mind we do seek to publicly display what Lord Vyronov has done since he walked away with victory at election-day. Shortly after election-day, Lord Vyronov sought to reform the Municipal Council that was created by former Maer, Lady Aleksandra Stafyr, though his plans were to instead have the Maer, Head-Steward, Tavern Manager, and the Chamberlain all hold seats. With the inclusion of the previously mentioned seats the Maer will retain three other council seats that will be specifically filled by the denizens of the city; the members of this council of men and women will be special-advisors during the Maer’s tenure in office. Their main responsibilities will pertain to establishing projects, initiatives and hosting a plethora of events to stimulate the overall populace of the royal city. Nearly a year into his first term as Lord Maer, Lord Vyronov re-established the Lord Bursar title and reexamined the explicit responsibilities of said position. Additional information can be read at the attached excerpted documents if you are curious on the set duties of the newly re-reinstituted Lord Bursar title. We the writers at B&K Publishing, will continue to supervise the remaining years of the Lord Maer’s first term as Maer of New Reza. We encourage you to continue to keep a tentative eye at future editions of the Golden Crow Chronicles so we may keep you duly informed about Lord Vyronov’s future actions in office. <link> <link> Pg. 2 ADVERTISEMENT “ALCOHOL DOESN’T GET YOU DRUNK. This move of generosity and grace to the denizens of our fine city is celebrated by the townsfolk. Many candidates who campaigned for office had tax reductions as one of their key policies, yet none of them could get it done. Only Edvard could cut the tax that was promised by so many others, this cut comes as part of the relief from the stress of war that burdened our city for over a decade, and as the war dies down there has finally been a return to normalcy in Reza. The palisade was removed, the streets and highways full of pedestrians once more and many new visitors flood our streets again. Things are looking up for Reza, and the return of normalcy is warmly welcomed. <link> Pg. 4 ADVERTISEMENT “THE NATION’S BEST KEPT HISTORICAL EVENTS & ARTIFACTS” New Reza, Haense Celestine standing outside the newly constructed Northern Geographical Society Are you curious to learn more about the rich and elegant history of Haense? This election was groundbreaking as it was the first election forced to go into a runoff, Karl and Konrad both won 50% of the votes leaving no one with a majority. This forced the first runoff election in Senate history, leading to a rather large margin of victory as Konrad would go on to win 63% of the vote and Karl would only retain 37%. After her body was found, it is said his Imperial Majesty Peter III was spotted entering the Royal Residence, and many events unfolded that the authors are not privy to, leading to a strain on inter-imperial relations. Nevertheless, her death shook the recovering nation, leading to a year of mourning as many nobles, as well as the Royal Family, clad themselves in black. She touched many around her, from the city of Haense to the rest of the Empire. Men and women all throughout the Empire came to her memorial service to mourn the loss of our beloved Queen. Therefore, the Royal Herzen, with the approval of Koeng Sigismund II, decrees the following, •The seats of the current and future cadet branches of noble houses will no longer be counted in attendance. Their parent house is capable of representing their interests. •The seat of Archbishop will no longer be counted in attendance. The Church’s interests are aptly and always represented. •The seat of Exchequer will no longer be counted in attendance. The Crown’s interests are aptly and always represented. We the writers at B&K Publishing commend the work of our fellow compatriot; Lord Henrik Vanir of Vasiland. This action is a step in the correct direction for the representation of the Kingdom of Hanesti-Ruska’s governmental function. <link> Pg. 10 HISTORICAL FIGURE OF THE YEAR Saint Heinrik Otto Bihar Lord Palatine of Haense Prince of Bihar Mural of Heinrik Otto Bihar, c.1624 Unlike his father, the second son of King Andrik II, Henrik Otto was not raised comfortably in the palace of Saint Karlsburg. Born in a time of great civil strife, when Haense had fallen to the courlandic menace, his childhood was that of an impoverished noble. Cutting his teeth in the streets of Mardon with his cousin. King Stefan I, as a youth Heinrik was far from the picture of Haenstian responsibility he would come to be. Often referred to as a rake he was known to spend mina frivolously on whiskey and cakes, all in the name of pretty women of course. This libertine lifestyle would eventually produce a bastard from a Miller's daughter. All though the sudden pregnancy, and a talk from the future Pontiff Erevard IV, then the simple father Josef Baldemar, a close personal friend of Heinrik Otto, resulted in a well intentioned attempt to form a family, the Miller’s daughter’s tryst with his cousin Stefan quickly put an end to that. Ultimately the blessing of Fatherhood proved to shake Heinrik Otto into adulthood, claiming the title of Palatine, and acting as the Barbanovic representative at the Great Duma of 1612, making an impassioned argument that would sway the nobility into electing his cousin Stefan I to the crown of Hanseti Ruska. With something to work for, the people of Haense, under the guidance, of Henrik Otto established the walls to a settlement that would eventually become the city of Alban. As Palatine of the realm Heinrik was known for establishing a political climate in which nobility was regarded as little more than a titular inheritance. Instead a strong centralized crown rewarded land meritocratically to distinguished soldiers and civil servants. His idealized image of an agrarian Haense with a weak noble class and a strong central monarchy came to be codified as “Biharism” upon Heinrik Otto’s death on account of his title as the Prince of Bihar. Although the Haenstian noble class would swell once more under Stefan I successors, Biharism proved to remain popular, holding close ties to the Imperial centeralist party and multi-time Haense senator Terrence May. Although Heinrik Otto is mostly remembered for his political achievements as Palatine he was far more than that. A loving father to his bastard daughter Natalia, and trueborn son Robert, along with wife Camilla Stafyr, he was often found strolling the streets of Alban alongside his family. So beloved were the Palatine’s children that the attempted kidnapping of Natalia Barbanov resulted in the first riot of Alban, in which the crowd beat the would be kidnapper to death with makeshift weapons and paraded the body through the streets. Likewise the birth of Robert Barbanov of Bihar, who himself would become a legendary Palatine, quelled the second Alban riot, with the peasantry embracing the newborn, passing him from laboror to laborer as the mob fell silent in reverence of the Prince. Indeed Heinrik Otto was well regarded by the lower classes of Haense, known to be a man of the people. Because of the flaming sword he often wielded in battle and through the course of his career as Palatine, a group of farmers on the outskirts of Alban believed him to be a reincarnation of Saint Owyn, and would travel to courts and to the heart of the city in order to kiss his feet. Indeed it was commonplace for men, women, and children to stop Heinrik in the street in order to give him gifts, much to the chagrin of his Cousin Stefan. For his humility, his position as a man of the people, and a devotion to the Church, and his commitment to running a fair and equitable government Heinrik Otto was named Saint Henry Otto of the Wooden Scales, Patron Saint of Commoners, Justice, and Fatherhood. It was a joyous event, the anticipation could be felt all throughout the room as the Varoche Hall was packed to the brim with people, young and old. After waiting for what seemed like hours, the Archancellor made his entrance into the hall and gave a moving and inspirational speech promising a better world, one of providence as he mentioned many times throughout the speech. The speech was recorded so that those who may not have had the privilege of attending could revel in the experience as well. Varoche Hall, Helena Orenians congregate as they listen to the Archchancellor’s speech regarding the State of the Empire. The following is the speech given by the Archancellor Simon Basrid: “With this great war that's come to define our new Empire entering her final chapters… It is time for me to unveil the nature of his Imperial Majesty's Coat of Arms. That red eye of providence that looks to all - but we know little of. In the service of that flag, I have come to learn a great deal about this country as one of her older emigres. What makes what we have exceptional? Why here, why Oren? We have been taught so many different lessons. Each with their own truth. It is the land of the prophets for one - maintaining an unbroken tradition of the Exalted's will. A civilization enriched by its faith and tradition. It bears the tapestry of man to another - every epoch of human achievement is gifted to her histories. But these are lofty ideals - difficult to understand to those emigres who have not been born and bred in our traditions. And so we look to that brilliant eye. Providence. Despite a torrent of onslaught from nearly every nation upon this continent… Helena, Haense, Curon, and Kaedrin have prevailed. They have survived the juxtapositions of civilizations. One civilization - coveting titles and wealth with no regards to service. Another - knowing titles and wealth are but vehicles to service. As some of you are familiar, the ministry of civil affairs held a gala of art some two months past. There, a painting of one of those great interstices of human tradition sold for two-hundred thousand mina. Mt. Augustus. A legend that kept many's spirits afloat during times of persistence. Perseverance - as we know from the Haeseni. And now look to the state of this Empire. Our economy hums - the imperial state army enjoying wage and salary thanks to the prudent financial mind of our Secretary of Treasury. Our peoples are well-defended - those soldiers and auxiliaries under the wise Fieldmarshal deNurem enjoying ripe success in the field. So, I should pose to you the same question I have asked of every civil servant that I have come across these past months. You enjoy the privilege of being a subject of the greatest Empire the world has ever known. The immense talent, tradition, and resources of that nation. What is the world you intend to build? That fundamental question - beyond the tapestry of man or St. Peter's Maxim or those so many other monikers of state. That is what defines an imperial. The capacity to build and influence the world. As we had seen with the AIS - that union, so in contrast to ours, did not consider that query. They unleashed a plague of bandits, killers, piasts, and monsters unto the world - with the sole intent of destroying the cinders of the Empire that we sought to cultivate. Yet heroes of our war yet - from those twenty years past, General Sabari, General Tiberius Barrow, General de Reden… The minister de Sarkozys, the late King Andrew, the noble Helvets line and the martyr Ester Rose. To the assembled we have here today. We all understand that question - that we can see to a better world. That we can build a world towards providence. A world in homage to the revelations of Sigismund - a world knowing the final fight to come in the great saga of our Canon's Auspice. That all virtuous descendants must assemble together to face iniquity, greed, deceit, and evil. That is what I leave the Empire with on these blessed days of mera, with prosperity on our lips and peace not so far in the distance. What sort of world will you build? I pray - to providence.” Varoche Hall, Helena An assembly of Orenians gathered outside the Varoche Hall As you can see, the Archancellor sought to inspire all of the Empire, from the farmers of Kaedrin to the Tailors of Helena. From the soldiers of Haense to the tea growers of Curon. A speech looking past our differences to see what unifies us. A speech looking back to see how far we have come from the oppressive Empire of Man, to this, as the Archancellor declared, “You enjoy the privilege of being subject to the greatest Empire the world has ever known.” An Empire of privilege, of unalienable rights as the josephites sought after to gain for all of humanity. An empire where the people have a say in their government and can blaze their own trail, a fairer humanity. The Archancellor declared as many would agree, our work for a better humanity is not done yet. We still strive for providence, but a message of hope to all of our readers, We are closer now than ever before. So put your faith in providence, put your faith in your Leaders of Haense, Curon, and Kaedrin; put your faith in the Empire. There was an aura of eagerness around the room as well, as there were some tightly contested races in Kaedrin and Helena this year and a sense that some senators would not return to the Varoche Hall. As the Senate was adjourning, Senator Jeanne Vladov of Kaedrin wished to say her closing remarks as she was entering a tight race and this could possibly be her last session as Senator. Before she could finish, a Golem barged through the Hall viciously attacking Senator Vladov and, as many onlookers stated, smashed her head like a pumpkin. Soon after a regiment of the Imperial State Army along with our own Exchequer of War, Erik Othaman, subdued the abomination and the Hall was shut down temporarily. Soon after the Golem Ban ordinance was instituted in Haense and the Empire. We’d like to share our condolences to the Vladov family. Rest in Peace, Senator Jeanne Vladov. KAROLY Novellen Palace, Helena A representation of the defense and prosecution sitting on opposing sides of the throne hall. The Novellan Palace was filled with white clouds as the powder from the wigs of the chamber filled the room. People were coughing and sneezing all throughout the five hour trial. It was certainly a trial to remember, as a Vicar of Godan himself was put on the stand to defend himself from quite controversial indictments. Bishop Krisztian of Ves was charged with, Treason, Sedition, Extortion, and Second Degree Murder. The Prosecution was made up of the Notable Statesman Frederick Armas and the Solicitor General Joseph Adler, while the only defense was the young John Everard Pruvia (Jep). In this long and arduous battle that took place in the court, Both lawyers battled it out, it was politically brutal. The Prosecution attempted to prove that the Bishop of Ves wrote the contested pamphlets of the Young Canonists as this would be supposed evidence of the Bishops seditious and treasonous acts to incite rebellion, but it was to no avail. The Courts ruled there was not enough evidence to prove that the Bishop of Ves was the author of the Young Canonists, albeit after a possible blunder of the Chief Justice Sir John D’Arkent after he would not allow Ser Frederick Armas to question a possible admittance of the bishops legal team that he wrote the Young Canonist pamphlets. Novellen Palace, Helena The pope, his fellow clergymen, and the Governor General of Kaedrin sitting behind the defendant The next charge the Bishop was indicted on was that of 2nd degree murder of an Elf. Two witnesses were called to the stand, both possibly quite unreliable as one was a dear friend of the bishop and the other an elf who seemed unstable and had many fits of anger on the stand, as well as admitted to not being canonist. The story shifted over moot points, but the main points was that the Bishop was in the wrong place at the wrong time when the murder was committed and he attempted to get aid, he did not commit the murder. The next witness to take the stand would be the High Pontiff, however the justices of the Supreme Court decided that it would not be necessary, as they did not see enough evidence to convict the bishop, and on all counts he was found not guilty. The Authors, while not sharing their own views, do think that the Clerical members and clergymen should be treated with more respect in such sensitive matters. As a vicar of GOD should not be someone so easily muddied by gossip from the realm. The Authors also found this trial to be fair and just, the empire’s judicial system, while still in need of work, is showing that it can function impartially in most matters. <link> <link> <link> Pg. 6 ADVERTISEMENT “A POCKET TRANSLATION FOR THE ADVENTUROUS” The Alimar Memorial Library, New Reza Former Lord Marshal, Otto Kortrevich reading at the Library in New Reza. ‘Naumarian is the language of the Haeseni people and gives a voice to the soul of the North. Together with my colleagues, we resoundingly passed an important measure that secures the place for small entrepreneurs to thrive in our society, the Entrepreneur Act by Senator Lauritz Christiansen. I reflect on this important measure because it is our role as the people’s representatives to speak for the needs of every person seeking to better their life here in our vast Imperial domain. I had the pleasure to meet a businessman by the name of Abram, the owner of Mother Broth. I was proud to speak to a man seeking to establish his business and propagating the great culture of our Highlandic roots with his cooking. His soup is one of the most renowned local delicacies of my provincial capital. It is the men like Abram that motivate me to support measures to uplift our Orenian businesses. It is they who serve as the backbone of our prosperity and we owe them our gratitude and our energies to succeed. ~Terrence May Pg. 8 HISTORICAL FIGURE OF THE YEAR King Stephen I of Haense Stephen Charles of Barbanov Stephanus Carolus Carovus Primus “A Foe to All Humanity, the Green, the Duelist” Unlike his elder brother Petyr, Stefan was not raised to be ruled by his father nor the court, and traditionally was expected to enter the church as his counterpart took the throne in Haense. His brother’s death to the pox thrusted Stefan to kingship, to which he was elected in heated debate during the Duma of 1610. His candidacy was supported mainly by the established nobility, who wished for a weaker monarch to maintain noble autonomy. First few years of his reign was left mainly to the nobility, and Stefan remained mostly in the heartlands in the fortress of Hochspitze. Through a deal with the Prince of Pruvia, he secured the Pruvian Inheritance, which included not only a large sum but control of many of the famous ‘Pruvian Banks’. This and the shrewd work of his advisor and later Palatine Henrik Bihar, a new army was established in direct control of the crown, which made the nobility more prone to compromise. Karlsborg was destroyed in the First Northern War, and without a capital, the royalist war camp during the Greyspine Rebellion soon evolved into the royal city of Alban- the de facto Haeseni capital. Veterans flocked to the restored state, and despite imperial losses in the Santegian Rebellion of 1617, the Haeseni army gained numerous victories, including the Battle of Asaili. In the spring of 1616, his army under command of Alessa Grendock and uncle Prince Otto Henrik beat back several attempts at raids by natives and Avarite mercenaries, fully pacifying them by 1620. Stefan meddled greatly in heartlander affairs, in contrast to the isolationist views of his predecessors, and was the focal point of many conspiracies and plots. He was first revealed in the Mardon Letter of his plans for a coup d’état of the emperor John V, and later his successful uproar in removing the imperial regent Robert of Marna. There were numerous assassination attempts against his life and he fought numerous duels against political opponents, including against the former heartlander archduke Odo d’Amaury, and his most famous showdown against his rival Robert of Marna, who he fatally wounded and killed. Stefan died a young death in 1624 due to genetic Hodgkin’s disease of his mother’s side, passing the throne to his uncle as he died without trueborn heirs. His reign marked the beginning of an era of regrowth for Haense following the disastrous Coalition Wars, which continued well into the reign of Otto III. His seemingly arbitrary political moves left Stefan a vile reputation in the heartland states, to which he gained his famous moniker by Prince Philip, ‘A foe to all Humanity’. *Excerpted from ‘Haeseni People’ documentation <link> @yopplwasupxxx Editor's Note: In the Next Edition. Viktor ascended up to his study at the former-Kovachev held stronghold of Kovagrad where he began to pensively write out a missive to Lord Barclay in hopes to amend their houses' past differences. To Erwin, I write to you now with the warmest regards as I express my sincere acknowledgement of our Houses sour past involvement with each other dating as far back to my grandfathers reign up till most recently my father’s reign. The Houses of Kortrevich and Barclay have by no means held close-knit relations with each other for reasons I’m not going to disclose here in this missive, but with this understanding in hand we must formally recognize the unfortunate faults of our predecessors and move to a brighter path for not only the prosperity of our Houses but most notably the betterment of the Kingdom we’ve sworn to defend and serve. With this in mind, I formally seek to invite the House of Barclay to Korstadt which my family resides where we may dine together and move forward as common leal vassals of the crown. May we indulge in pleasantries and discuss our past mistakes and past triumphs together that we’ve seen to disregard. I for one recognize this intention is most paramount with the troubling times our Kingdom faces at every corner moment. Might this be a first act of mine as Magravir in proving that as united vassals of the Crown, the Kingdom will directly reap the benefits for standing together as opposed to the contrary. @Miniguy15736 YOURS CORDIALLY, THE MOST HONORABLE, Lord Viktor Otto Kortrevich, Margrave of Korstadt, Baron of Koravia.

My am I proud of what you’ve accomplished throughout your long journey. I’m most eternally proud of your efforts to regain your House’s nobility stature- may your sons, grandsons and great-grandsons thereafter follow in your footsteps. Join me now with your beloved ones while we wait on those we’ve left behind to join us, I’m sure Otto will be making his way up here sooner or later where we may share stories of our past together...”

Haeseni Campsite at Athera, 1756 An Illustration of the Haeseni host all together at their campsite Privej, readers! Allow us to entertain you with a tale of adventure, mischief, sacrifice, intrigue, and so much more! With the return of the King and his Expedition from Athera, they bring with them an untold number of stories, gifts, and ancestral relics. It began many years ago, once the Realms of Arcas caught word of a landmass that was undoubtedly recognized as the once lost continent of Athera; the peoples of Haense were bustling with activity at such a discovery. For the uninformed reader, upon Athera lies the birthplace of the Royal Family of Haense, the House of Barbanov, and its seat, the Duchy of Haense, upon which the ancient capital of Siegrad was situated. Immediately was it that the Kingdom prepared for a voyage, stocking on essentials, forming the Royal Expeditionary Command, and commissioning a new flagship for the Realm, titled Geltenkaros, and constructed graciously by the House of Baruch. With the vessel now seaworthy, the time came for Haense to depart. However, something seemed amiss at the time, the King had been reported absent, unable to be found within the Ekaterinburg Palace, or its nearby vicinity. Dismissed as minor thoughts at the time. Coinciding with the Haeseni expedition, the Emperor had also seen it fit to dispatch his own from Helena, leading the Empire personally to the ruins of Athera. And so the fleet sailed forth, leaving behind the realms of Arcas. An unpleasant mystery came to be revealed, as it was found that the young King had managed to stowaway within one of the barrels meant to carry Carrion Black. With ample distance already created between the Geltenkaros and Arcas, it was deemed that the boy would stay, and explore the lands of his ancestors with the rest. Perhaps in retribution for such a reckless decision, the Imperial crews were struck by a Kraken as they came to sight the Atheran landmass. In the ensuing battle, the Emperor’s ship was split in half by a great swing of one of the Kraken’s limbs, while the Geltenkaros shared the same fate, dragged under to a watery grave. By the Grace of God, the majority of the crews survived, clinging on to whatever they could as the tide swept them away to Athera. Surprisingly, the specific land the Expedition was marooned upon once belonged to the ancestors of our very own House of Stafyr, Wendenberg to be exact. The nearby territory was renamed to Peter’s Landing in honor of His Imperial Majesty, and recuperations began as the Imperial forces began to establish camp. However.. Wendenberg was located upon the eastern half of Athera, while the destination of the Haeseni, Siegrad, was situated across the entire continent, on its western half. A long trek was in order. As the Haeseni got accustomed to this new land, they sought to make sense of their nearby surroundings, having caught wind of there being remnants of various societies that survived the cataclysm that tore apart Athera centuries prior. It is here that the Crow Odyssey begins, for the Haeseni party stumbles upon a trio of native merchants seeking protection, and as any Haeseni would, their hopes were met amiably. The merchants were led forth to their destination, but an unnatural and mysteriou force had other plans. North of Petrus lay a great bridge that connected the Eruthos Canyons and the heartlands of old Oren - as the expedition crossed, a bolt of lightning suddenly slammed into the bridge with tremendous strength, enough to tear the overpass asunder, and the merchants along with it. Fearing for another strike, and with their return route cut off, the Haeseni Expedition fled northwards, seemingly directed by some sort of Holy Spirit. It took many months to eventually follow the canyons of Eruthos to lands of Ayr, where the House of Heinzrich once ruled, a title now belonging to the House of Baruch, the descendants of the former. With Ayr found, Siegrad had to be close. Unprepared, and unaware, the Haeseni continued forth to their destination, and ultimately leading themselves into another ambush, this time at the hands of a native tribe. Led by a formidable Chieftain, Bralt the Boar, the Scyflings descended upon the Haeseni with great savagery, inflicting many casualties to the point where all seemed lost. But fate would have it end another way - Bralt himself would be ambushed. Led by an elderly Chieftain, Olvav, the Tribe of Voliks would shatter the rear of the Scyflings, causing them to rout, and saving the Crow King and his entourage. The Haeseni would see Siegrad yet. continued... Pg. 2 With so many injured, the Voliks led the Expedition to the ruins of Vanderfell, the once Capital of the Waldenian People of Aesterwald. From here Olav explained to the Haeseni of his Crowsoath - an Oath of Fealty to the progenitor of the House of Barbov, the Patron Saint of Haense, Karl Barbanov, which was still in effect. For centuries the Voliks had acted the part of a custodian for the lands of Haense, maintaining its wealth and defending its ruins. The Elder continues on, explaining of the great vault Karl had constructed underneath Siegrad, from which relics prized over all others by the Barbovics were stored within behind a great gate. However, the keys for such were casted about and lost throughout the Hinterlands of Northern Athera - only oral tradition passed down from Volik generations had made any sort of sense about their locations. In the very same depths of the Vault of Siegrad, the Great Wyrm, the Destroyer of Athera, had made its domain. According to Volik folktale, within its Wyrm’s maw was one of the rumored keys, and supposedly, the remains of Saint Karl. Luckily for the Haeseni, the Wyrm lay dormant at the time. Unluckily for the Haeseni, Bralt the Boar had found them once again. Only through the actions of Primrose Kortrevich, Knight of the Marian Retinue, the Haeseni were saved. Her selfless sacrifice committed in the same way our Patron Saint had done so. Such an act gave the King and his party the time to flee, having found a way to circumvent Bralt’s ambush, and subsequently retreated from Siegrad for the time being. As our brave Haeseni recovered, the Emperor had called upon our ranks to assist in the Siege of Petrus. It appears that while the Haeseni were lost in the northern hinterlands of Athera, His Imperial Majesty had discovered the ancient capital of Oren, Petrus, had been swarmed with the ruinous forces of the undead. Despite being significantly outnumbered, the Imperial Expedition had uncovered wondrous long lost technologies, in the forms of explosive artillery, keeping the undead Petrusians at bay with such weaponry. The arrival of reinforcement tipped the balance of power, and so a general assault was given. Together, the Empire tore through the rank and file of ghouls and skeletons, laying waste to all abominations in their path. The threat came to a conclusion as the foul conjuring necromancers (which had merged into a grotesque representation of a dragon at the time) were dispatched appropriately by way of spectacularly fired pairs of grapeshot. As the Emperor and his retinue began their return to the homeland, the Haeseni had unfinished business. Now prepared for the trials ahead, the Expedition returned to the Siegradian Hinterlands and with the assistance of the Voliks, the Haeseni retrieved the last of the keys needed to open the Great Vault. With all the tools in their possession, the King was finally able to delve deep into the Great Vault and with the insertion of the keys, activated an ancient set of mechanisms that swung the gates open. Revealing within untold amounts of riches, mounds of gold twice the height of the average man, and relics thought to have been long lost to time. The Kingdom of Haense had finally seen the return of their artifacts. However, it was for naught, for Bralt and his Scyflings struck again, slaying near to the entirety of the Volik Clan in the process. A great battle ensued, resulting in the flight of the Haeseni as they cut their way through the encirclement, being directed by the last of the Voliks to their ships. Having endured far too many casualties, and now tasked with the protection of the Volik refugees, the Haeseni had no other choice but to flee Athera altogether, bringing with them only a fraction of the wealth of Saint Karl, but keeping in their possession the entirety of the Barbovic arsenal and much more. They Haeseni Expedition returns to New Reza, greeted with triumphant applause as a display of their experiences and newfound wealth was made apparent to the peoples of Haense. And so ends the Odyssey of the Crows. Leopold was the son of disgraced Lord Marshal Sergey Stafyr, and despite the recent fall of his family, had during his time as pater familias managed to re-elevate his family to comital status and strengthened his own political power, leading to King Marius II summoning him to serve as his Lord Palatine following Konstanz Ruthern’s disgrace and resignation. Leopold's tenure as Lord Palatine coincided with a build-up of tension and military stand-offs in the heartland estates between competing powers of Renatus (led by the imperial-claimant Pertinaxi dynasty) and Adria (who had recently elected Marius II as their duke). He gained fame in his defense of the sovereign during the subsequent Sacking of Ves (264) and destruction of the Adrian estates, defending Marius both in the court of the Pertinaxi dynasty and during the Adrian massacres. Leopold was also seen as instrumental in the Nenzing Plot where high lords of the Empire convened in a chamber deep within the castle of Nenzing to plot a revolt to replace the Pertinaxi dynasty with the Marnantine dynasty. After the plot was unraveled by imperial spies, Leopold orchestrated the first imperial coronation of a Holy Orenian Emperor in over a century of civil turmoil, sparking the War of Two Emperors. During the war Leopold fought in the victorious Battle of Upper Rodenburg, though suffered defeats at both Lower Rodenburg and the crucial Siege of Helena (269), before being killed at the Second Battle of Leuven (271) due to an infected arrow wound. Under Leopold’s tenure, he completed the first Haeseni Law Codex, though it remained unpublished till the end of the War of the Two Emperors under King Andrik III, and heavily sponsored the Duma and its subsequent rise in political influence. *Excerpted from ‘Lord Palatines of Haense’ documentation <link> @Emenzi Editor's Note: In the Next Edition. 13. Ser Nikolaus Kortrevich witnessed the sight of his eldest daughter sacrifice her life in order to save the rest of the Haeseni grouping from the comfort of the seven skies. He extended a sturdy hand out to Primrose to hoist her up with ease as she made her ascent to the skies that flew above. “Come, Prim. Hoist yourself up here where you may alleviate yourself from your oaths and the many vows you swore to uphold and dine with your mamej and I. We’ve been waiting for both you and your sister to join us ever since we ourselves made our ascent.” Nikolaus offered a heavy embrace to Primrose where he stated; “I speak for your mamej as well as myself by saying that we are most eternally proud of your renown love-filled life you lived. From the earliest dawn of your childhood when you were but a mere child you sought to become a Dame and quickly as years passed you accomplished that feat and not only brought your menage honor but the Kingdom to which you represent the utmost amount of prestige. Your sacrifice to your compatriots will naught ever be forgotten as your very action to sacrifice your own life saved the lives of your liege lord and the other Haeseni lords and ladies alike.” Lotte and Nikolaus would offer a nod to Prim as they both pulled back their wooden chairs for the trio to all sit down together and rejoice on their lives they had all lived and convene together finally for the many lost memories they had forfeited along the way. Nikolaus: “Prim, my have I missed you! Be it only seven years since I made my ascent it feels like an eternity since I last held you in my arms. Oh how I’ve missed you.” he placed a kiss on her forehead as he leaned back into his chair. Lotte: “Princess, I’m sorry for the faults I had in your life but let it be that we forget our misgivings and spend time together now as a family reconnected.” she embraced Prim with a warm hug as a flurry of kisses flew over to Prim’s cheeks. Prim’s face became rosy in color as tears flowed down her face: “I love both of you ever-so dearly as I’ve missed you both far more than I can put into words. But, my God, am I grateful that the three of us are here together where we may guide those we’ve left behind to a state of resolve.” Nikolaus, Lotte and Primrose all held each other's hands tightly around the table as they continued to reminisce on the times and memories of the past. Nikolaus then recited a tenet from the Haense chivalric tenets code; ‘To guard the honour of your King, God, liege lord, and fellow brothers.’ “Out of all the Knights and Dame alike that I saw honoring their oath, you amongst the likes of many remained true to your oath up until your last breath. Tales will most certainly be told of you, decades if not centuries later to the generations of children that come after us.” Nikolaus once more offered a heavy embrace to his eldest daughter with Lotte intertwining through the embrace; “Allow us to guide those we’ve left behind to a state of relief following your passing, may we await for your sister’s arrival and may we extend out aiding hands to your uncles that still forbid themselves from leaving the war-riddled Arcasian plains.”

Why now? Why ever? Ever since I was a boy I looked up to you and to that of Papej as exemplars of what it meant to be brave and courageous. Since my earliest upbringing, you’ve taught me the many fundamentals of life and the essence of living up to the name we hold. Rest easy and may both Papej, Juliyus and I join you one day.”
  16. RECONSTRUCTION OF KORSTADT, 1755 Construction Plan of Korstadt Decommissioning of Fort Korstadt Throughout this never-ending war between the Holy Orenian Empire and the Alliance of Independent States, Fort Korstadt has served as a functional military outpost for the Brotherhood of St. Karl but has been seen to be dormant as of recent years. Due to this and the request by the Lords of Kortrevich to move their family’s keep away from the fray, it has been duly requested by Lord Markus & his son Lord Viktor to obtain a province north of Haense where they may serve as a protectorate of the northern border of Arcas. A meeting took place on the 10th of Gronna and Droba, 308 E.S. where The Lord Regent came to a common agreement to grant such land to the leal vassal that is House Kortrevich. Upon this conclusion, the deconstruction of Fort Korstadt has been officially declared and will be taken down over the next coming year by Haeseni laborers. 10th OF GRONNA AND DROBA, 308 ES Following the conclusion of court summoning by Lord Regent Otto Sigmar; Ser Markus, his son and Otto ascended upstairs to the council room where a meeting could commence. At the helm of the table sat Otto were Markus and Viktor sat on opposite sides with the inclusion of Ser Jonathan standing idly by Otto’s side. The meeting commenced and agreement was made: TRANSCRIPT: Markus settled himself into a seat with a grunt before sliding off his helmet. Viktor took a seat at the table where he sat opposite to his father. Otto rests his cane across his lap before looking up to Viktor: “How old are you now, son?” Viktor: “Thirteen, Your Excellency.” he said with slight hesitation. Otto nods: “Nearly an adult then, I see. Very good.” He turned then to Markus, “What is it you wished to discuss, Lord Kortrevich?” Markus: “I know that we have loosely spoken regarding my House’s plans to migrate to the North and I’d like to expand on that conversation. My son and I have written up a small indenture in accordance with this, if you would give it a read.” [!] As the knight said this, he passed a document to Otto. Otto nods, setting the document down: “I have no problem with this.” Markus: “Fantastic.” He gave a faint smile, “Spasibo, Otto. I will add the appropriate dates and such to make it official, your premature signature is appreciated.” Otto nods, grabbing a pen and jar of ink from the table as he signed the document. Markus: “I have nothing else to say, unless you do?” He looked to his son across the table. Viktor pondered for a short moment: “I’ve got nothing to say further, papej.” Markus: “An amicable meeting.” The Margrave stood and made a similar grunt to the one after sitting. “Do niet let me keep you, Your Excellency, my House and I look forward to serving yourself, the young Koeng for all the generations to come thereafter.” Otto: “Of course. Good day, my lords.” He grabbed his cane and rose to his feet, limping off. Never would I have envisioned you’d ascend your way here as soon as you have but nevertheless, the anguish you faced after Edyth’s passing and ultimately all that you’ve experienced throughout your life has finally come to a close. Rejoice here with your love ones and guide those you’ve left behind to an everlasting state of peace and happiness. 19. Ser Nikolaus Kortrevich welcomed Andrik with open-arms to the seven skies where he embraced the young monarch. ”I must admit you made your way up here far sooner than I expected, Young Prince. Your rule, while short in nature was most definitely led by profound command- myself along with your family are most eternally proud of what you cultivated throughout your life.” Nikolaus then recited a chivalric tenet from an old knightly tome. “To hold yourself in the light of God, and live by honor and for glory.” ”From your earliest upbringing to your last breath, you held yourself in the brightest light of God and lived by the code of honor and glory. I speak for the citizens of Haense that all recognize that without a shadow of a doubt and those that have passed before you have long acknowledged that reality since you were a young boy. May your son, Otto Sigismund live up to the precedent you established, where he’ll propel the Kingdom to a perpetual state of prosperity as you, your father and the kings of past have propelled towards.”

  22. Eirik Baruch reads over the transcript and after short deliberation to himself he begins to write yet another missive to Terrence May. Mr. President, @Piov “After taking the time to read over the transcript, I’ve come to the conclusion to vote against the confirmation. No being no matter their race, gender or creed should be confirmed to any justice court of man solely because of the fact they have no comprehension of the simple five infractions of Imperial Law. I cast my vote in stiff opposition to Mister Elverhilin being confirmed to the Western Circuit Court simply because of this point.”
  23. Eirik Baruch writes out a small missive to Terrence May which would read his casted votes To Mr. President, @Piov ”I wish to formally apologize my hapless absence at today’s honorable Senate session, I made my return to Valwyck late last night and my arrival to the Imperial city took longer than I initially planned. Despite my absent seat today I seek to vote on the bills presented today: >On the amended form of ‘Worker’s Right’s Guild’, I strongly vote in favor of this bill passing. >On the ‘Napier-Ruthledge Bill’, I staunchly vote in full favor of this bill passing”
  24. THE KORTREVICHBOWL 9th of Wzuvar and Byvca, 303 ES | 9th of Horen’s Calling, 1750 “A bull doesn't concern himself with the opinions of cattle like yourself, Rodrik.” ~Ser Nikolaus Kortrevich 9th OF WZUVAR AND BYVCA, 303 ES The solemn day proceeded from the morning sunrise as the banners above Fort Korstadt glistening in the sky. The hoofs of horsemen were increasingly audible as a dozen or so men arrived near the path where the entrance of Old Reza was situated. The murmuring of these arrivals was heard from within the walls as the Kortrevich family awoke to the commotion that stood outside. Rodrik and his company of knights made their long travels to Fort Korstadt, the seat of House Kortrevich where they had been greeted with a heavily armed fortress manned by the valiant brothers of the Brotherhood of Saint Karl. Upon their arrival, word soon made way to Nikolaus and his family as they had exited their rooms and made way to peer over the top of the walls. A few words were shared between the two parties. After coming to the conclusion what must be done. “Is it really him?” one of the footmen asked, looking to Ser Nikolaus who rushed out to look for himself. As the elder knight stepped out, he looked over the fort crenellations. Beyond the waving banner was the man who had betrayed his oath over thirty years ago. Ser Nikolaus remained stoic, studying his cousin. He did not believe it for himself initially, placing himself into doubt. “What shall we do? I will ring the bells and alert the Brotherhood.” a footman responded before trudging off back to Reza. Without seemingly listening to anything else around him, the Knight Paramount kept his gaze fixated at Rodrik. “Papej, I will face him with you.” Primrose spoke up. Nikolaus then turned to her, shaking his head, “No Prim, this fight is something I must do alone.” To Primrose discontent, she quickly realized the valor of knighthood, the calling she had accepted and heeded her father’s words. As soon as he spoke, Ser Nikolaus went back into the fort and donned his helmet and cloak. Before departing outside, the elderly knight paused to recollect himself. He recalled his humble beginnings in Markev, the city of his youth and the experiences that would shape his life. His family and kingdom were insurmountable priorities, the dearest of things he would fight to his grave. The War of the Two Emperors made irrevocable damage to these two things, rendering a different man. Ser Nikolaus spoke little and remain vigilant, and his years of service amounted to the greatest calling he earned in the service of his kingdom and for the glorification of his family: Knight Paramount. Now he emerged from the doors of the keep, slowing trudging down as the weight of the armor he wore for life became noticeably denser to his aging constitution. As Ser Nikolaus walked toward the gate, he stood motionless, peering through the openings of his helmet. His gaze was unwavering as he studied this man who claimed to be his cousin, Rodrik. It was not until Rodrik spoke, his voice having an emanating and memorable tone to the elder Knight Paramount’s ears. “Cousin, I have come home…” Rodrik stated with a small grin on his face. “You have put up quite the welcome party for our family reunion. How flattering.” The disgraced knight then dismounted his horse and beckoned his retinue to stand back. This fight would be personal. As soon as Rodrik brandished his sword, Ser Nikolaus immediately recognized the man he had sought to take down his entire life. Ser Nikolaus then looked up to Primrose and nodded, “Open the gate, Prim.” His daughter looked hesitant, crying out, “Papej! I will fight him with you!” The Knight Paramount remained still, hurt by the grief in his daughter’s tone. He, however, declined her want and without having raised his voice in much time, he yelled in response, “DO AS I COMMAND!” Ser Nikolaus spoke authoritatively, speaking to Primrose not as her father but as the Knight Paramount responding to his duty. Together, Primrose and Emaline said very little after their father’s interjection but muttered a prayer for their father aloud just enough to where he could hear: “Godan, guide him and strengthen his body and soul. O saints above, hark! Let not my petition go without divine attention. Render justice on the wicked and let the righteous be free. Godan above, uplift the valiant and slay the oathbreaker. Defend us in battle, O saints above…” His family, namely his two daughters; Primrose and Emaline pleaded for their father to remain safely behind the towering walls but despite their unwavering interest in keeping their father safe it was long decided well before Rodrik’s arrival what was to take place when Rodrik made his way to Haense. Ser Nikolaus descended to the drawbridge below, wielding his longsword as his black and gold cloak wavered about behind him. His decorated armor plate glistened in the open field, a set he had donned his entire life. From the moment of his knighthood to what would be his last time in battle, the elder knight stood face to face with his lost cousin. Brief words were shared between the two cousins and shortly after the conversation concluded, Nikolaus took off his gauntlet and removed his wedding ring and took out three missives before passing them all off to a member of the brotherhood that descended from the walls. The footman brought it to Primrose, his eldest daughter to keep ahold of no matter the outcome and give to the appropriately addressed people if his death was to be had. Both men prepared for a fight that would end in their demise. The fight ensued and through many clashes of both blades, the fight concluded abruptly after some substantiated amount of time. Both aging men, who were past their primes, pierced through each other’s armor both at the same time in similar locations, inflicting damage to their bodies. The damage was fatal. Their eyes remained still as the consciousness of their bodies began to fade slowly. Many aching screams could be heard by both Nikolaus and Rodrik, but ultimately the first who collapsed was Rodrik as he tumbled down to the drawbridge where their fight began. Soon thereafter, Nikolaus was brought to his knees before bringing his blade onto Rodrik one last time as he let out an aching sigh. Rodrik’s party of men who he traveled north with, watched the fight take place as they cheered for the man they hoped would reign victorious as he did oh so many years ago but they quickly stood in mournful silence in witnessing what transpired before them. The men and women that stood up atop of the walls also cheered for the renowned swordsman that was Ser Nikolaus but later stood in absolute silence after the revelation was made clear to all that were present. Cries for help were made by those of the Kortrevich household before the entire Brotherhood rally of men sallied out of the main gate to alert Rodrik’s company to retreat back to their lands away from the fray. All that laid on the drawbridge outside the fortress was the two lifeless bodies of Rodrik and Nikolaus where both of their swords would lay. Rodrik’s greatsword – ‘Kortrevich’s Vow’ & Nikolaus’ longsword. . . .
