  1. THE 2nd KAROSGRADIAN MARKET FAIR Issued by the Office of The Royal Treasurer On this 21st of Tov and Yermey of 375 E.S. PREFACE Following the extensive success of the first Karosgradian Market Fair, initiated by former Lord Treasurer Ser Brandt Barclay and hosted by the current Lord Treasurer Erich Barclay, the latter of the two would be honored to welcome the entire populace of the Hanseti-Ruska and beyond to the second Karosgradian Market Fair. Be it the commoners of Karosgrad, the nobles of the Kingdom, the honorable wee residents of Knoxville, or whoever resident of Attenlund who may attend or international allies, everyone is invited to participate in the noble art of free trade, either as merchants, customers, or both. Distinguishing itself from its predecessor event, this Market Fair shall take place along the main road of Crown Avenue, found right after entering the main gates of Karosgrad, and stretching all the way into the main Square, where the event will further take place. As such, face-to-face trading within every owned shop along the Avenue will be made possible in hopes of allowing the business owners to meet new customers and further encourage their everyday trade. However, similarly to the previous Fair, this one shall be held directly after Royal Court, making the day even more eventful. Depiction of the First Karosgradian Market Fair, and its many atendees. SHOPS AND STALLS Along with the business owners who already possess the shops of Crown Avenue and the stalls of the Main Square, other merchants and traders may participate in the fair by occupying one of the numerous, temporary stalls that shall be placed about the square and avenue alike. These stalls will be free of charge to any traders looking to display their goods. In order to apply for such a stall, any potential traders must contact the Royal Treasurer Erich Barclay (IGN: Reinmaren, Discord: GoodGuyMatt#3284), and a place shall be found for them. Whilst a bird may be sent or meeting may be arranged with the Treasurer for those wishing to set up shop during the fair, the following application may also be filled in order to request a stall. Stall Application: Merchant’s Name: Goods being Traded: Type of Trading (Face-to-Face or Display): IGN: Discord: AUCTIONS Yet another highlight of this particular Market Fair will be the holding of an auction by the Office of the Royal Treasurer. During this auction, two things of similar nature will be bid on, those being the renaming of the Karosgradian Harbor and the naming of the main gates of the city. This auction will be hosted by the Royal Treasurer himself, with the bidding prices going as follows: Renaming of the Karosgradian Harbor: Starting at 750 minas, minimum increments of 20 minas. Naming of the Main Karosgradian Gates: Starting at 500 minas, minimum increments of 10 minas. Before someone may be allowed to participate in this Auction by bidding, they first have to talk to the Treasurer and High Seneschal, Ingrid Barclay (@MissToni) on the name or rename they want to implement, so to make sure that the names are appropriate. This can be done by sending a bird to either of the two before the Fair, and for those unable to do such but still want to participate, they will be allowed to consult with the Treasurer just before the Auction. Additionally, the following application may also be filled: Auction Application Name of Bidder: Bidding on: (Harbor Rename, Gate Name, or both) Proposed Rename/ Name: Additionally, participating merchants may also use the grounds and occasion of the Property Naming auction to initiate auctions of their own, once the first one is complete. To do this they simply have to contact the Treasurer just before the auction is started, or whilst other merchants are conducting their own auctions. In this case, the Royal Treasury shall keep 10% of any winnings in the following auctions due to its involvement in sponsoring it. Depiction of the Karosgradian Harbor “DAS REINMAREN TURNIER” The Reinmaren Jousting As already done in the first Market Fair, a Jousting Tournament shall also be held towards the end of the 2nd Fair, where participants will show their skills of horse riding. The horses will be provided by the Ducal House of Barclay, and picked from fine Reinmaren Stock. Knights, horse riders, and anyone who feels confident in their horse-riding skills will be free to gain themselves both prestige and the following prices, which again will be provided by House Barclay: First Place - 150 Minas Second Place - 100 Minas Third Place - 50 Minas Signed, His Excellency Erich Erwin Barclay, Baron von Sigradz, Lord Treasurer of Hanseti-Ruska

  4. THE LEGACY OF THE REINMAREN CHAPTER I: GENESIS Penned on the 2nd of Jula and Piov, 375 E.S PREFACE The Duchy of Reinmar is one of the preeminent fiefs of the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska, and its ducal House of Barclay is equally prestigious. However, much of the history of the Reinmaren people overall have been transferred orally, retold from father to son across the ages. With the blessing of the Duke of Reinmar, we publish a history of this scion, that we may better educate our people’s descendants. Let no sons or daughters of the Reinmaren forget the humble beginnings of our lineage. Wer Rastet, Der Rostet. While this work aims to delve deeper into the roots of House Barclay, this work is not specific to House Barclay solely. Instead, this work seeks to examine the origins of all Reinmaren people, and shed light into their humble history. It would be wrong to look at the history of the Reinmaren through the eyes of one of its tribes within the coalition, and thus this work shall examine not the history of House Barclay only, but the history of the Reinmaren people, some of which still are within Haense today, such as those of Mondblume blood, and those of the Mackensen kin. The name ‘Reinmaren’ historically has been used to describe a coalition of semi-nomadic tribes of Waldenians, who sustained themselves through the way of raiding. While at their genesis, the Reinmaren were not distinguishable from their Waldenian kin at the time of their schism from their factions, the geographical and cultural split with their predecessors would follow later on. According to some sources derived from the southern lands of the Raev, the religion that the Reinmaren tribespeople followed was characterised by spiritualism and ancestor worship, codified by usual aspects of honour, war and discipline that can be compared to the Waldenian practices of their contemporary society. The descendants of the Reinmaren tribe, still co-existing as a coalition of families, mostly reside within Hanseti-Ruska and still carry on their cultural practices and behaviour, derived from their Reinmaren and Waldenian forefathers, while synthesising those practices within the Hansetian and Raevir cultures, and the context of their time. GENESIS The genesis of the Reinmaren subcultural identity had its seeds sown within the Waldenian tribes. In the society shaped around them, various tribes engaged in pillaging at the time due to the hostile geography they had found themselves in. The Reinmaren were virtually indistinguishable from their fellow Waldenians at this time, and had participated in the cultural practices within the same tribal identity. According to the "Theoderik Inscriptions", which are stone monuments erected South of old Waldenia, the split with the main body of the Waldenians seems to have begun when a minor but populous family within the Waldenian hierarchy, the family of Chieftain Theoderik, started a feud with a larger family of the Chieftain Gelimar. The Gelimaren were placed higher on the regimental structure of their culture, but Theodorik’s folk, in a rare and paramount moment for the Waldenians, refused to obey their elder clan. The initial feud between the two clans had sparked when both clans were guarding the flank of the larger horde of a warlord named Jorik, and had disagreed upon looting rights while raiding the lands of the Raev he had assaulted, but the dispute would go on to become a larger dispute than either side could reconcile. The following is one translation of the text inscribed on the monument, highlighting the source of a feud. It seems to have stemmed from the rights of pillage: "Theoderic the bold, chief of the Rein, ruled over the shores of the South. Now he sits armed on his horse, his shield strapped, eyeing forlorn the bounty of this year’s reyd from the kharenmanner.(the Raev)” From the reyd, Ricimer, born of four brothers, rides empty-handed only with a bloody zvaerd." "He tells tales of chief Gelimar’s earnings, and talks of his generosity. For the naked people, he gave clothing. For the poor people, he scattered riches. For the scanty people, he made numerous. Yet you scatter none before us, and I am left with crimson withers." "It is the next dawn that the chief Gelimar is delivered a crimson spear from Theoderic, for he says that the men of Gelimar bore no arms against the kharenmanner. While they enjoy the bounty, Adelfrid, He who stood valiantly in the rear of the host receives none." It is recorded that the Gelimaric clans would unite to fight the clan of Theodoric after this grave insult, a declaration of a feud. The two tribes of the Waldenians would fight for many moons, and the realm would suffer. The waters of Waldenland would be stained red as the high-ranking Waldenians stood dormant to the bloodshed. Theorodic’s own son, Alaric himself would be claimed by a Gelimaric axe, and Gelimar would fall before the chief’s spear. While the two smaller tribes fought their bloody war, the larger Waldenian tribes at the time were beset with a larger danger brewing North, as the religion of Canonism grew exponentially, with the distraction of the larger tribes turning these warring small factions into an unnoticed speck within the political realities that surrounded them. Evidence from heirlooms of the surviving families, and general digging on the area seems to show that every major tribe in the borderlands of Canonist factions have experienced some level of effort on their conversion. With battles of the Gelimaric and the Theoderican factions remaining unnoticed, no local authority could prevent the bloodshed from escalating. Villages were burned, slaves were taken and raiding was commonplace. Both of the Chiefs realised that the battle was draining their tribe of their already needed strength to survive, and resolved to bury the hatchet in a meeting. "With the blood-price paid in high from both our kin and kith, we wish the Gods to see through our joint salvation. from this day onward, I pledge to protect my newfound brother Gelimar by any means possible, as one ought to protect one's brother, insofar as he does the same for me.” - Words of Chief Theoderic, spoken on the subject of peace. After a peace deal had been struck, the attention of the Waldenian Chieftains Gelimar and Theoderic turned to the conversion efforts done by the Canonists upon their neighboring tribes. Depleted from men after their battle, they resolved to unite their tribes through marriage with Gelimar’s daughter, and Theoderic’s son. The resulting child would be trained to become the Chief of the overall tribe. Though the Canonists eventually came forth, and akin to a hammer hitting upon a piece of glass, the Waldenian tribes would be shattered through diplomatic or military victories against their pagan way of life. This isolated the tribe of the newly proclaimed tribe. With their homelands in danger and borders receding, over the years, the new Chief, a fully grown man now, would make the decision to retreat from their heartlands. Upon fleeing the Canonist incursions, the tribe transformed and changed their way of life. They turned into avid riders, using horses to improve their standard of living within their semi-nomadic culture. They would roam the lands of other tribes, and foreign lands with their horses and move on with the migrating game to hunt and sustain themselves. This turned the tribesmen into avid riders, who could fight and shoot on horseback. The tribesmen continued their raiding traditions upon their neighbours and the locals would call them the ‘Reinmaren’, which is a mashup of the words ‘Rein’ and ‘Men’. Depiction of the equestrian Reinmaren raiders. Unknowingly, the Reinmaren had prepared themselves to stand up to the challenges of a feudal world that they would soon come to experience. Their skill in breeding horses and fighting on them placed them on par with the Knight-Retainers that the monarchs at the period employed extensively, making the skillset of the Reinmaren in high demand. Until then a loosely confederated band of marauders, raiding and pillaging with no real direction or motive beyond profit and habit, the various Reinmaren tribes now found themselves evolving into mercenary companies, with the various petty kings and lordlings of the sundered North eager to direct their raids against their rivals. This life of blood and coin suited the Reinmaren well, and for generations these hereditary mercs were the bane and the blessing of many a lord of the North. But the destruction left in their wake was nothing compared to the annihilation of the Northern realms that would force them to abandon this way of life. Around the turn of the 13th century in the modern calendar, although surely a different date in the ancient Reinmaren one, the Undead horde descended upon the North of Aegis, and empires were cut down in their relentless march like wheat before a scythe. The few unsettled Hansetian tribes who remained in the far North, where the ground was too cold to farm and life held on like the flicker of candle, were the first to be snuffed out. Their frantic flight south was the first warning to the settled Hansetians and Raevir of what was to come, but the warning arrived too late, and their realms too were shattered. And of course, the Reinmaren they often employed were also forced to ride south, with death at their backs. Old Reinmaren handiwork depicting the importance and utilization of horses in warfare. Terminating their flight in what seemed to be the most northerly territories still free from Undead grasp, the dispossessed Reinmaren immediately took to clearing room for themselves in these new lands. Unbeknownst to them, they had just entered the newly established Realm of Hanseti, and the Teutonic Order reacted warily towards the savages who were infringing upon their territory to set up camp. The Order sent a retinue of Sariants to pacify the Reinmaren tribes and bring them into the fold of Hanseti. The tired and broken Reinmaren were no match for the organised and disciplined Teutons and they submitted without a fight. They swore oaths to Gaius Marius and the realm in a ceremony on the banks of Lake Kippen. Although the mercenary companies of old had been formally disbanded upon their assimilation into Hanseti, these divisions remained as the Reinmaren continued to identify themselves with the bands their forefathers had belonged to. In addition, with the journey to Asulon and the end of the Undead threat, there was once more coin to be had in fighting the wars of princes and lords, and wherever there was profit to be made, a band of Reinmaren sellswords was soon to follow. The existing warband divisions and the new ones created by the Asulonian companies, who often fought against each other, led to the foundation of the different clans and cultures of the Reinmaren that still exist today. This period of settlement and increased peace was where one of the last Reinmaren chieftains, Enver Hosha made his mark. Focusing his tribal policies on the work of the Reinmaren individual and their contribution to the tribe as a whole, chief Hosha and his sons began the implementation and strengthening of a new mentality upon their tribes. The mentality of the prominence of hard work and competence. Every tribesman was either encouraged or forced to have some occupation by which they contributed to the clan as a whole. It did not matter what the occupation was, as long as it was productive and the individual showed the utmost respect and devotion to it. Hosha called these tribesmen Shqiptars, a term loosely translated to mean "hard worker", or "craftsman". "It is not the status of the work that makes the Shqiptar. It is the Shqiptar that brings status to his work.” - saying of Chief Hosha, words by which he taught the new Reinmaren generations Through the bigenerational ruling of Chief Enver Hosha and his son, Haxhi Hysen, their tribal family, as well as the Reinmaren clan which they led, had become a group of hard working tribesmen, each devoted to their work, be it tending to the fields, or leading the tribe. Men and women were not judged or respected based on the nature of the work, but instead based on the devotion and competence they showed at their respective occupation. Following the era of leadership of Chief Hosha and his son, the remaining Reinmaren tribes began being inducted into feudalism andi mplementing themselves into the Hansetian society, straying from their old life of aimless brutality and barbarism. Yet, they remained true to their ideals, culture, ideologies and rites, a good majority of these passed on generation through generation as unchanged traditions, whilst others were adapted to fit the ways and beliefs of the modern day. 12. THE DUCAL HOUSE OF BARCLAY "Wer Rastet, Der Rostet" 3rd of Wzuvar and Byvca, 375 E.S Dynastic arms of Barclay with the Barclay eagle as supporter, holding a sword in one hand to signify the family’s military tradition, a scepter in the other as symbol of their authority over their demesne and a halo as a symbol for the Sainthood of Tylos Barclay. INTRODUCTION Presently being one of the only two Ducal houses and one of the few remaining Waldenian families in the realm, House Barclay is a relatively new line of landed peers within the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska. Seeing its rise from humble origins in the scene of noble families, the house has quickly grown in both status and numbers, now having become one of the more prominent lineages of the Kingdom. Founded by Ser Wilheim Barclay as the Baronial house of Freising after the War of the Two Emperors, the Barclays now rule over Reinmaren land and populace, whilst stemming from the same rich, yet relatively unexplored Haeseni-Waldenian culture. With hard work and sheer persistence being core mindsets adapted throughout the members of the house, the aspects of competence and duty are taught and emphasised to every Barclay since youth. They are taught to contribute to both their House and Kingdom, bringing glory to each, whilst also remembering their humble roots and abiding by them. CURRENT TITLES The Duchy of Reinmar The County of Kretzen The Barony of Freising The Barony of Sigradz RISE TO DUKEDOM The Barclays have seen a relatively quick rise to both power, rank and prestige; a noted difference from a majority of its fellow noble lineages and houses in the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska. It began with the story of the peasant Wilheim Barclay, the determined Reinmaren farmer and warrior who aimed, at the time, to live a life of glory for both himself and his family. Having shown himself a versed military commander of King Marius II’s forces during the War of the Two Emperors. After a series of military campaigns during the war, most prominently being the contribution of sixteen horses liberated from Renatian stables and placed into Haeseni ones. This event, among others, led towards the establishment of an equestrian tradition within the house, as Wilheim was monikered “the Stallion.” Behind him, Wilheim had the backing of his two brothers, Anton Barclay, who was to become both Archbishop of Haense and a member of the College of Cardinals, and Reinhard Barclay, who later aimed to form close ties with the House of Ruthern (Dukes of Vidaus at the time), taking the mantle of the newly created Cadet House of Barclay-Markanz and becoming Baron of Sigradz before his untimely death. Depiction of Wilheim and Anton Barclay, founding members of House Barclay As Wilheim took the first steps towards leading the house towards a path of influence and power, his son, Erwin, would achieve something that has been achieved only twice throughout Haeseni history, that being the rise from a Baronial house into Dukedom within a single generation. Through sheer perseverance, competence, and expansion of the House and its political power and influence, Erwin was able to achieve the quickest noble rise possible, doing so as only the second patriarch of House Barclay. Being a hard working and experienced military leader, Erwin took over as Marshal of Haense, succeeding his father in this position, thus becoming the second out of four consecutive Barclay Marshals. Having risen to the highest level of nobility currently granted to families in Hanseti-Ruska, the further work of the house was now a matter of maintaining the power achieved, something that would come relatively natural as its succeeding patriarchs adapted their lives into the Reinmaren mentality of competence. With both Erwin’s son and grandson, Manfred and Friedrich, succeeding as patriarchs and Lord Marshals of Hanseti-Ruska, the house kept to its martial roots, leading, maintaining and expanding the Haeseni army for a total of four generations. During this period, as the House began expanding in numbers, other Barclays had also been establishing themselves as any competent Reinmaren would, with many occupying Aulic positions in his Majesty’s council, some facing themselves towards business endeavours, and others focusing on continuing the martial tradition. CULTURE Etymology and Reinmaren Language Despite Barclay not sounding as a Waldenian name, it technically is: for it stems as an adopted word from the Waldenian linguistic branched predecessor known as Reinmaren. Barclay is the combination of the Reinmaren words Bark, meaning “charge,” and Lei, meaning “steed.” Barklei became the Reinmaren way of describing the cavalrymen of the tribes above the Tova river: alleging that House Barclay, or the ancestors they stemmed from, have a long standing equestrian tradition. That said, no known Barclays precede Wilheim, Anton, and Reinhard, and they are considered the first generation of the house. As for the Reinmaren language itself, it mostly consists of a good portion of Waldenian, and even despite the differences most of the language that is spoken to this day by the Reinmaren is indeed pure, if not slightly altered Waldenian. The original language of the Reinmaren, however, although mostly lost to time, has found itself spoken by a very limited minority in modern days, mostly consisting of old Barclays who were taught the language by their predecessors. Although the language has begun being used more and more within the house, there remains no academic study or documentation of it, and most of it is communicated orally. Reinmaren Roots and Establishment of Ideology Stemming from branches of the extensive Waldenian culture, the Barclays have found themselves adapting to both their ancestral culture, whilst integrating themselves into the Haeseni one. Thus, as the pursuit of personal and house identity continued, the Barclays, through a process that lasted a few generations, have now established themselves as individuals of mainly Reinmaren descent. Although the history of the Reinmaren and their origins is largely extensive yet sinfully unexplored, suffice to say the lineage descended from a coalition of many semi-Waldenian tribes, naturally called Reinmaren, although to not overly-extensive distinction between their Waldenian counterparts. Overall, this branch of Waldenians versed and differentiated themselves from the rest through the subscription to a number of ideologies, some of the most prominent ones that have remained with the Reinmaren of modern day being the importance of competence and the extensive respect for work. Furthermore, these tribesmen have appeared to highly associate themselves with the art of horse riding. Accounted as some of the most fearsome horse riders of the land during days long gone, great emphasis was put into martial training and equestrian skill. As such, the Barclays have found a way of ancestral bonding and establishment of self identity through the subscription to many of these Reinmaren ideologies and traditions, sticking to their roots and adapting it with time Depiction of a Reinmaren training his son. In the modern days, the concrete upholding of the house to these ideals and ideologies have manifested themselves in a number of ways. For example, it still remains a highly regarded tradition for the young Barclay boys not only to know how to handle themselves in battle through training, but also to join the ranks of the Haeseni Royal Army, be it for life, or to simply offer themselves as a fighter for the Kingdom temporarily. Nevertheless, it is expected from all house members to not only have such skill, but to be willing to use it for the protection of both family and kingdom in times of need. Furthermore, the subscription to the ideological importance of competence within the members of the house has been manifested in a more abstract form of tradition, something not yet written, though expected from all Barclays. As said from one of the old Reinmaren chieftains, Chief Hosha, a saying still remains prominent throughout Barclay's life: "It is not the status of the work that makes the Shqiptar. It is the Shqiptar that brings status to his work.” With the term Shqiptar meaning hard worker or craftsman in old Reinmaren, the outlook of the common Barclay towards the importance of work becomes tied with their history and ancestral culture once more. Overall, it suffices to say that the house has been able to keep to its Reinmaren roots, an aspect which is further emphasised to every member of the house, as they are reminded to remember their roots. This advice refers to both the Reinmaren upbringing, whilst also reminding the now-noble Barclay that they were once a mere peasant, and ought to regard themselves as such in specific cases, so to retain some of the commoner humility and bind with the people. Portrait of a Barclay noble riding his trusted steed Equestrian Tradition Much like the Carnatians or the Savoyards, the Barclays seemingly inherited the ways of the steed. In their service as Landsers during the War of the Two Emperors, they had proven their cavalry excellence in every battle they were deployed. After this war, the House kept an extensive breeding industry to provide to the Brotherhood of Saint Karl and the Hanseti-Ruskan state. Their brand of having quick steeds made them, aside from being a military force, a big commercial player as well. From this wealth, they purchased further land concessions and a villa in New Reza. With further training in the the ways steed riding, the newer generations were taught more and more on the art of cavalry, with many using such skill during the Scyfling Invasion in Haense, namely Ser Osvald Barclay as a leader of the Cavalry troops, and Brandt Barclay as a mounted warrior during one of the battles. After the exodus to Almaris, the family further associated themselves with these noble beasts as entrepreneur Albrecht Barclay began a business of horse breeding and trading, using his family knowledge to his advantage. After many horses bred and traded, the man had supplied enough steeds to mount a good majority of the Reinmaren populace. Depiction of a Barclay taking care of his steed in Reinmar TRADITIONS Hustingen - House Gatherings The origin of the term ‘Husting’ comes from the Reinmaren term “Hausding”, literally translating into “House Thing”, in which the riders would gather to elect new chieftains, discuss the future of their tribes, their feuds and matters of household. While the Husting lost many of its elder features with the tribesmen transitioning into settled life, its core function of acting as an informal moot remained stoic. Within this gathering, the family members gather around the Patriarch’s table, determining decisions and the direction of the House together. Depiction of a Barclay Husting Die Prüfungen des Hengstes - The Trials of the Stallions Since tribal days, adulthood was not seen as something to be given. It was something to be earned. Young Reinmaren children were told and shown what was needed of them to become adults. A rider was expected to provide for and protect his family, so Reinmaren men took very seriously the job of preparing their sons and daughters for adulthood. For the descendants of the Reinmaren riders, an extra pair of hands helping out at the farm had been necessary. So, from early childhood, children were given tasks that prepared them for their future lives. These tasks produced essential skills a boy had to acquire, and these skills were taught by fathers, brothers, uncles and other men in and around the family. Age didn't automatically mean a child had what was required of him to be regarded as an adult, boys had to prove their worth. This same outlook into the process of growing up has been adapted even by the modern Reinmaren, namely those of House Barclay. Commonly, a Barclay child is expected and taught to grow into a man of great feats, be it through their parent’s teachings or through a more concrete and systematic manner of evaluation. The latter of these being what are known as the Barklei Trials, or the Trials of the Stallions. These tests are set upon the growing Barclay son or daughter as they near the age of maturity, usually around fourteen to sixteen years old. As they grow, the Junger Barklei are required to undergo the following trials so to become Hoherer Barklei (see House Hierarchy): Die Prüfung der Demut - The Trial of Humility The child is subjected to a month of working along with the farmhands and stableboys around the Reinmaren countryside, with a scythe, to introduce the child to the core tenet of Jorenic liberties, as well as teaching the child of the root of the Barclays. Die Prüfung der Loyalität - The Trial of Loyalty The child is inducted into the standing military of Hanseti-Ruska. The Barclay Junger is to follow the initiate program as a member of the Haeseni Army, so as to receive the basics of proper military discipline and training. Once finished, they may either take the oath and pursue a military career, or leave the army before taking the oath and pursue another career of their choosing Die einsame Jagd - The Lone Hunt With a bow, a quiver of arrows, and their sword, the child is sent into the thick foliage of forests around the heartlands of Hanseti-Ruska, within the forest, they must come back with the corpse of a predator. The bigger, the more prestigious. This trial is usually done with a couplet of Junger Barclays, where they go together in their hunt, so as to both earn their prestige, and learn to work with their family. Die Pilgerfahrt des Heiligen Tylos - The Pilgrimage of Saint Tylos After the hunt, the child packs up their belongings, food and weaponry to depart for a pilgrimage of repute. Before the pilgrimage they conduct a prayer to Saint Tylos and prepare to devote themselves to the holy saint’s pilgrimage in humility. Throughout the pilgrimage, the Barclay is to wear black clothing, so as to symbolize a humbled mind and state during the holy process. The pilgrimage starts at the chapel of Saint Tylos in Reinmar, then continues to the Basilica of Saint Henrik in Karosgrad, then back towards the road to Reinmar in order to go to Providence and pray at the Basilica of the Ascent of Exalted Godfrey. Once finished in Providence, the pilgrim Barclay travels south to visit the Abbey of Saint Robert, then making their way to Luciensburg to the Temple of Saint Lucien and Blessed Jon Renault and the Owynist Priory. Afterwards, continuing the road to the north-west for a bit, the Barclay shall go off road and begin to walk the hillsides towards the north, so to reach a road that will lead back to the Haeseni lake, and with a boat row back to Reinmar, where the pilgrimage ends with a pray to Saint Tylos’ chapel, just as it began. Depiction of a Junger Barklei preparing for their pilgrimage. Der Eid von Macken - The Oath of Macken Originating from old Reinmaren tribal oaths performed during a Chieftain’s rise to power, the Oath of Macken, in the modern context, is a series of oaths performed by an heir to one of the Reinmarian houses and the people of that house, along with their other Reinmarian counterparts upon his succession to the leadership of that house. The oath requires specific designated men, in order to fulfill certain roles as the ceremonial event takes place. Upon the completion of the oath, leadership is considered to be transferred to the new patriarch. Artists’ interpretation of the tribal preparation for the procession of the Oath of Macken for Chieftain Enver Hosha. “DIE GRUNDSÄTZE DER HENGSTE” - THE TENETS OF THE STALLIONS Established and formally written by Baron von Sigradz, Erich Barclay and the rest of the members of House Barclay in 375 ES, the Tenets of the Stallions were to be a set of principles which both served to define the House’s culture and beliefs, whilst also putting such in practice. The Tenets of the Stallions are to be followed by all those born under the House of Barclay, they are to be respected, honored, and practiced by all those who call themselves Barclay. Those born into House Barclay are to be reminded of these Tenets throughout their life. As such they’re taught them since youth by their family members, and after finishing the Barklei Versuche to show themselves to be a fitting Höherer Barklei, they take an oath before Saint Tylos and the rest of the house, swearing to uphold the following Tenets: 1. Ein Barklei sollte sein Leben leben und Taten vollbringen, die seiner Haus und seinem Königreich Ruhm bringen. A Barclay ought to live his life and accomplish deeds that bring glory to his House and Kingdom 2. Ein Barklei sollte seinen Barclay-Kollegen respektieren. Er muss ein guter Ehemann, Vater, Sohn, Cousin oder Onkel sein und immer Blut an die erste Stelle setzen. A Barclay ought to respect his fellow Barclay. He must be a good husband, father, son, cousin or uncle, and always put blood first. 3. Ein Barklei soll sich nicht zu tauchen in Unmoral erlauben, ein Ungläubiger oder Vater Bastarde werden. A Barclay shall not allow himself to dip into immorality, become an infidel, or father bastards. 4. Ein Barklei muss Karriere machen, um zu Haus und Königreich gleichermaßen beizutragen. Denn we rastet, der rostet A Barclay must pursue a career to contribute to House and Kingdom alike. For he who rests, rusts. 5. Ein Barklei sollte seine Karriere mit größtmöglichem Respekt und Hingabe behandeln, was auch immer es sein mag. A Barclay ought to treat his career with the utmost respect and devotion, whatever it may be. 6. Ein Barklei sollte sich immer an seine Wurzeln erinnern. A Barclay should always remember his roots. 7. Ein Barklei sollte diejenigen mit niedrigerem Rang mit Respekt behandeln. A Barclay should treat those of lower rank with respect. 8. Ein Barklei sollte jemanden nicht nach der Art seiner Karriere beurteilen oder respektieren, sondern nach der Art, wie er sich seiner Karriere widmet, solange dies ehrenhaft ist. A Barclay should not judge or respect someone based on the nature of their career, but based on the nature that they devote themselves to their career, long as it is honorable. 9. Ein Barclay sollte wissen, wie man eine Waffe führt, und er wird immer bereit sein, für Haus und Königreich gleichermaßen zu kämpfen. A Barclay should know how to wield a weapon, and he shall always be prepared to fight for House and Kingdom alike. 10. Ein Barklei sollte sich mit Reiten auskennen, und er wird diese edlen Kreaturen immer mit Respekt behandeln. A Barclay should be versed in riding a horse, and he shall always treat these noble creatures with respect. Depiction of the pages in which the “Grundsätze der Hengste” were written HOUSE HIERARCHY Similarly to the establishment of the Tenets of the Stallions (read below), after the conduction of the Barclay Husting of 375 ES, hosted by Erich Barclay von Sigradz with the rest of the house, it was decided to establish a system of ranking, or better put, hierarchy in the house. This would include the roles of the Duke, Duchess, Heir, as well as the implementation of different ranks of Barclays depending on their position in the house, their contributions, etc. Thus establishing a concrete way to distinguish and reward the hard working Barclay who upholds their tenets and duty to the house, whilst creating incentive for the younger of the family to follow in their ancestor’s footsteps. As such, the following Hierarchical system was established: Hauptleiter (Duke von Reinmar) - Stemming from the Old Reinmaren titles used during the culture’s tribal era, The Hauptleiter is a term that has changed its meaning while its use remained. The word refers broadly to the occupying patriarch within the House, who carries the responsibility of serving and leading his peers into prosperity. Hauptmutter (Duchess von Reinmar) - The “mother” of the house, whose duties and specific obligations to the house, beside raising the Duke’s children, remain open-ended, as long as the sense of loyalty and honor is kept intact. Von Sigradz (The Heir) - Due to the lack of primogeniture succession during the tribal era of the Reinmaren, no historical term for the old chiefs’ singular heirs have been found. As such, the title and position of the Barclay heir shall remain their noble title, in the current case being Baron von Sigradz. With this title usually used within the house members to address the young heir, it was found fitting that such a name was decided. Begleiter - The “Companion”, the same one who is chosen by and accompanies the Duke during the Oath of Macken, and continues doing so throughout their life. Functioning as a second hand to the Dukes, the Begleiter assists and takes the same authority as the Herzog in his absence Schatzmeister - The “Treasurer” of Reinmar, this position is assigned to a member of the house that has shown interest in upkeep and maintaining both the financial accounts of the house as a whole, as well as look after the proper fulfillment of the Reinmaren coffers. Kern Barklei - Being the highest of the common Barklei ranks throughout the house, the “Core” Barclay is the most seasoned, trusted, and competent of the house. These are part of the main leadership and dynastic council of the lineage. Alter Barklei - Translating to “Old Barclay”, this rank within the family is reserved as a titular reward and acknowledgement to the older generations of living Barclays, who, after a long and prosperous life, retire. Held with much respect within the house, the Alter Barklei usually fulfill their positions as grandparents, granduncles, etc. They help take care of the children, raising them the proper Reinmaren way, and bless the rest of the family with their wisdom. Grand Barklei - Being one position before a Barclay may become a Kern Barklei, those of the Grand rank, as the name suggests, are Höherer family members who have distinguished themselves as doers of great deeds and bringers of glory to the house. These are some of the more competent of Barclays, and, although the position is not directly associated with age, these tend to be the mature and adult members of the house. They are held with great regard, both within the house and outside of it due to their position and competence. The process of deciding whether a Barclay is fit to be called a Grand one is decided by the Duke and the house as a whole during a Husting. Upon reaching this rank within the family, the Barclay is given a new, healthy and strong steed of Reinmaren stock. Höherer Barklei - Translating to “Higher Barclay”, the Höherer family members are those Barclays young adults who have finished the Trials and take the Oath of the Stallions. These are the common Barclays in a sense, those who have recently matured, and are now expected to begin showing great promise to the house. Despite their further development as a Barclay and individual, the Höherer Barklei are nevertheless regarded with as much respect as anyone in the House, and are supported by the higher members to reach their potential. Junger Barklei - The youngest of the family, these are the children of the house, usually spanning up to the age of 16, where they then begin taking their trials, joining the military as an initiate, and finally take the Oath of the Stallions. During their childhood the Barclay is allowed to explore the world, and is to some extent introduced to the overall mentality of the house as they are raised. They are allowed their fun for a good majority of their childhood, though around the age of 14 to 15, as they mature, they are regarded with much more seriousness by the elders, preparing them for adulthood. Once sworn to uphold the tenets, the Junger Barklei becomes a Höherer. BRANCHED LINEAGES Wilhemites: The main Ducal line, starting with Wilheim Barclay and his descendants down the ages.
