Crashes / Restarts.

I am making this thread, not to /give/ feedback but to /receive/ it this time.

Basically two things I would like to know!

1. Why are crashes occurring at all? (When we aren't DDoSd that is)

2. Why does it take a bazillion minutes for the server to come back when a restart happens?

because java is a shitty programming language.

Amen.

You cannot blame it on Java when other servers run perfectly fine with no crashes.

I merely ask this question, so that I may understand.

A mixture of unstable craftbukkit and custom mods?

in reality you can. Other servers blow superfluous amounts of money paying for hardware to keep up this game. Java, at the cost of your computer performance, runs it's own VM, giving it some magic powers that I never seem to see anyone ever employ.

also 600th post :o)

I know some servers which don't crash and run on lower specs than this one though.

Single-threading hurts way more than a VM ever could. You run out of upload speed long before you run out of processing power except if your code is poor and it hangs (cpu spikes) but you shouldnt throw hardware at that problem.

answers to questions are generally some variant of the following:

1) generally, attrition. Lots of plugins and lots of GMs doing stuff, not always correctly. The big plugins are not necessarily optimized for larger servers and our intensive usage of them increases entropy ('corruption') which hurts server stability in turn,

2) We have a lot of data.

The war against crashes is very easy to win. Dump all the large plugins, take OP powers from everyone but the Techs and force players to rely on their own strength rather than modreqqing everything. Remove the ET and most 'enchancements' and stick to the basis. Your server will be flavorless, sure, but stable.

Also 4.0 lets us start clean which means it takes a while for the attrition to build up again. Our homebrew plugins are the ones we're able to fix and stabilize which is good as long as the current Techs stick around.
