Your View: Applying To The Server

I am very glad to see a thread like this! As a new applicant, I was very surprised at the application process, and how long it took for me to make it! I also hear the stories about how it was longer back in the day of Aegis and Asulon, and  have a little suggestion (that I hope~) will make it a little bit better.

Instead of asking the specific questions one-by-one (for example, "What is your sex, age, etc.) make it into one (or two or three) big questions like "Give a brief description of your character's physical traits", or "What are your character's strengths and weaknesses?" You can persuade the applicant to provide the reader with bullet points, to keep things neat and organized.

I think that people joining should have to go to a more in depth Bio. When I applied I remember actually putting thought into my Bio. Now I look at new player apps and they have like 2-3 sentences worth of backround for their character. Also being this laxed and not having the player be able to learn the RP aspect, with no VA's they see no problem with going and not RPing until they actually need to. I know I have met newer people now that I find trying to go through my stuff adn when I RP to them I get no response and they simply leave. Its really irratating actually. I think that this server should be just a tad bit difficult to get accepted to. It should feel that way because of the aspect of the game being RP, but being in minecraft.

I like the current application format as it is..BUT I think what would help potential applicants is a guide on basic server lore that they could put in an application. So I'm thinking something along the lines of a thread that names the major settlements and their current leadership and past leadership. To help applicants choose a birth location for their characters bio for example. I'm struggling to find the words to explain this cos 5am..but if i get time i'll come back and rewrite it.

^Mayhaps a loremaster will take up this task....to see how well they are keeping up with the times.

I like how the app is at the moment. Looking back on it I sort of enjoyed that anticipation in constantly refreshing the page. I will say one thing though, when an applicant is accused of stealing or copying someone elses definitions of Metagaming and so on, a link to the original content should be posted. On my first app I was denied for copying the definitions even though I wrote them myself and had no way of knowing where the 'original' was.

I suppose my word is a bit biased, but I prefer to improvise rather than to have everything laid out on a platter for me to follow strictly throughout my role-play. If the character I am controlling becomes an interest that I grow attached to, that's when I take the time and effort to make a descriptive biography/backtory. Having to write out a detailed biography on an application shouldn't be paramount for acceptance, but more so an optional thing for you to take part in as an activity on the forums so people can grow immersed in the interactions they have with your character.

I think that when someone is accepted the person who accepted them should provide the applicant with links to guides and such on the forums so they have an inkling of where to start.

Nuu..

I personally don't think that the applications should be shortened anymore than they already are.. Honestly I think they're to short as it already is..

When I first applied here, on LotC, I was intimidated, yes, but I also was following the so-called title of post-54529-0-44080900-1390762990_thumb.p

Knowing Lord of the Craft as a great, SERIOUS roleplay server had me stoked to join, and it make me work so much harder on my app than I had for past servers. I spent day after day typing my backstory and the answers to my ORQs. I have to admit I was a bit upset when the ORQs were removed and also as the Application Team got more and more lenient. Daily, I see trolls everywhere, in every nation, or I see someone who is having a terrible time roleplaying; whether it be their grammar, or just laziness in general..

I don't know, maybe I'm just paranoid or rambling, but I really don't want the applications to be shortened...

I think the best thing that could help is a few things I've noticed joining dozens of RP servers.

Bio's are simply not important. They just aren't. Now we can't do without them, but to me, the gold in a player is the story they form as they go rather than a novel about their character's past. Besides, big events that involved players is always more interesting than an event a player wrote for their character.

Now, I'd like to see some Rp examples in applications, but not typical ones. Just a few situations to be presented that are specifically engineered to make players fall for common RP mistakes, like metagaming and powergaming. I think that will sorta cement understanding of the two pitfalls.

^Couldn't agree more.

Instead of starting with a story written, let them start with page one and develop it upon the server. There are better ways to test their understanding of server lore, and grasp on the English language/grammar than writing page long bios.

We should sit down and write out what we Want new players to know, What we expect them to know, and What would be nice for them to know. Then develop the application and joining process to fit those desires and needs.

I think the removal of the open ended questions did make it easier to apply, but overall I have seen more and more new players taking longer to settle in (by this I mean RP to an adequate standard and stop the small amounnt meta and power gaming) than before. This may not be linked but I do believe the open ended questions although challenging and not as friendly ensured the applicant thought more about their character and proved they hadn’t just re-written the definitions in their own words.  This ensured that quality of RP. The application is fine as it is and this longer period for new players to settle in is not overly long but it’s just what I’ve noticed as a negative. Aside from this the server has recently increased in number and I believe current systems are performing fine especially in the application section.

Suggestion- maybe one open ended question at the end of Biography to test everything? :genuis:

I'm not opposed to questions to test their RP, and Knowledge of rules and lore. I'd rather see focus on this than bios.
