Your View: Applying To The Server

Not sure if this is the correct use of the term "pugsied" as, if the human thought that the goal was to kill orcs, were they not doing what they thought right, as opposed to going out in a blaze of glory?

*no rp killed. It doesn't matter you understand what I meant. The player hadn't read the lore so I sent him a link on the lore just to allow him to have more fun.

It has been made far, far too easy and I have seen far too many players who use improper grammar and are new to RP get in to the server only to be bullied and slapped around by people as a result. Please, for the love of god and all that is holy, give more of a briefing on the app. It doesn't need to be stricter or harder or anything, it just needs to give off the general sense of how to RP well on LoTC.

Honestly this may be unrelated, but bring back guides and add some more mentors. This will help out the new players a great deal and it's nice to have players not thrown into this immersive RP world without guidance. Maybe then less people will disappear.

Raise the standard of the applications, especially when VA's are gone. I know people complain on how it scares people and such, but if you want to join the server.. You gotta

I personally see no reason to change them as they stand.

My two Australian cents.

What are they like (personality)?: -

What are their ambitions?: -

Do they have any special skills?: -

I've hated these questions and their previous forms since I joined. I've no idea why they're necessary to have outside of the Biography or in the Application at all. It just gives them more stuff to struggle writing about when they'll probably never really use it.

Can we also stop with the talk of making the Application even harder? It's long enough and tedious as it is. Making it any longer will revert back to the old-new applications of being a Resume. No one wants to apply to a job judging whether or not they can have fun with big kids. It doesn't help that half the people on this thread preach of making them harder because of the so-called doomsday of everyone being a villain. We've been making silly predictions of the end of our server since it came out. Make it more inviting, like they want to be with us because it's fun, not because you're too unimportant enough to join.

I think the current application is good. When I first applied back in June of 2012, it was a lot longer (with the open ended questions, but I personally had fun doing those), so it was more intimidating than the current one and more time consuming to fill out. For newer people and those with less patience, I think the current application works pretty well. It's not too hard, but it's not too easy either.
More feedback on denials for applications would be good. Maybe having more members on the AT could help with that? I admit that I am not, nor have I ever been, part of the AT so I don't know how easy or hard this would be to do. I got lucky and didn't get denied either of the times I applied (in 2012 and just recently), but I have heard that the denials can be a little lacking in the reasoning for the denial or for ways to help improve the denied app.
Posting on the Minecraft forums as well as on here. I think this could be removed. Some people can't be bothered to do both, so they don't. I would have, but not a lot of people would want to do that, because that is more effort than some people are willing to put forth. Just my thoughts on this. :)

Weaken the floodgates which hold back the flood of new players. Make applications easier to be accepted. We're gaining momentum as a server, and if we are to take that momentum anymore we should not hold ourselves back.

I agree mostly with what's already been said. I feel that the application is good as it stands, although I would personally re-introduce Open-Ended Roleplaying questions. Whilst the quesitons may not directly relate to the roleplay on the server, it gives whomever is reviewing the application a better understanding of just how the applicant intends to roleplay, which I think is an incredibily important part of the reviewal process.

Goooooooood no. Applications to the server are absolutely needed. You have to realize the vast majority of minecrafters are pvp server conniseurs and rather.... Lacking in maturity. Hell it took me seven tries to get into the server and I still support the system.

One of the giant hurdles I see all the time for new players is. Learning what is going on in current events. Completely throw out the window that they will have an accurate knowledge of ancient history. I have encountered players upon my travels. Veterans who started playing in Asulon mind you. That couldn't remember who Aeriel was.......Or Availer, and they made note of Blundermore as the old wizard who makes trinkets.

I would like to see a total removal of character history from the application. As the signs read when you step into this world. It is a birth for your character. You shouldn't be expected to know much, which gives you a chance to learn and grow IC vs OOCly.

Removing character history would only help new players, as they could start from scratch and although they can still have personality's fleshed out a bit, they will soon find they are shaped by the world which they have entered and not by a per-determined focus.

Heck, when I first was asked to join. I created a young Elvish woman, who was raised by Dwarves and sold fabulous soup for a living.....It only took me 2 days to realize that no one wanted to buy soup and quickly change my direction.....'Many thanks to Availer for the nudge.'

I disagree. I dont think a complete removal of character history is necessary. I believe that more than anything else, the development of your character during the application stage indicates the current level of writing and roleplay you are at, murity and mindset.

Naturally, characters will change throughout a players time on LOTC, that is to be expected. Though I think the creation of a character history actually gives players a chance to decide what kind of character they want to play, and it gives them initial talking points and roads into RP, or at least I feel it does. If they decided in their history that they wanted to play a warrior, though through actually playing on the server they discover that is no longer what they want to do, then so be it, however I dont feel that warrants the removal of generally the largest part of the application that requires the most time and dedication.

I try to promote players to write down there history as they go along in the server, "not with much success" I have yet to find a character who sticks with their story for longer than a few days. It seems like a rather large "Although interesting to read" hurdle which only real purpose is to allow us to view the quality of their imagination and English writing skills. Both of which I think can be done in a much easier way.

Most players know very little about what is going on in the server, so naturally their bio's are made up tring to pick a word or two from lore to connect their story in...often times revision is needed on application simply to correct certain elements, or make a character sound more "Dwarfy" if they are attempting to create a Dwarf.

Perhaps a form of Quiz on lore, or a test designed so that even if they look up the answers from previous applicants they will still learn the bare requirements to join. We could even add Extra quiz's based off Plugins, Racial information, Ancient lore, Professions, and National History's. I think even a modest amount of our current players would benefit from a little more reading and a little less "Slashy Slashing"

I agree with most of these ideas, but I must say...

I think the application is /too/ easy.

There should be a quiz or something that MAKES you read the rules and the Lore.

I have had people do something against the rules, and have their excuse be "Well I didn't read the rules"

Oh and yet in your application you said you did. Oh and what is that? You're favorite rule is the rule you Broke. I can totally see that you read the rules.

And with lore, I can't tell you the amount of people who I've seen/read about having Dragons in their history, and other things that don't make sense lore-wise.

I don't know about you guys, but back when the application's were long and tedious, the characters that came out of those applications were really, really, good. I feel like I'm one of the last people who used the long application, and it makes me sad.

^Agreed, They need to put forth more effort into learning the server rules, and lore.

And much less effort trying to create a character that will most likely be 99% Different once played on the inside.

If they still wish to create an amazing character before playing, at least they will have the correct lore to do so.
