How Do You Think A Pure Role-Play Game Would Fare?

So, this idea's been in my head for a while as the project I want to embark on to break my whole "not really programming or even doing anything but instead wasting my life playing LoTC" slump, and I have been iffy about it as it seems like a somewhat waste of time.

 

Essentially, what I want to make is an online game in the form of a pixelated bird's-eye-view sandbox chat room thing not too dissimilar from Club Penguin meets Earthbound, but for the express purpose of Role-Playing, whatever kind of Role-Play that might want to be done. 

 

Setting aside all technical and monetary aspects of this project (Feel free to like, give me suggestions or something), I'd like to know if this would have any use other than giving me the feeling that I am not squandering what living years I have on this Earth, and like, if anyone would be interested in using it for whatever purpose.

 

Forgive me for being a complete shitwit when it comes to the language I use here, I am... inexperienced with web and game design. This is also, I realize, probably a bit ambitious of a project, but I have free time (and I mean free time)

 

Here's a brief run-down of what this game entails:

 

• Top-down, tile-based 2D graphics and environment.
• Fully customizable avatars, complete with preset actions using sprite animation. Files would be sent client to server and stored on server.
• Server-by-server customizable chat with emotes and whatnot.
• Publicly available server software that allows connection to a hosted server from a client or embedded web app (Really depends on my situation regarding resources. I have some web hosting for various useless **** I do.)
• Customizable tilesets for servers, or perhaps something cooler around that note.
• Character Bio/Info text that will be stored somewhere.
• A "rule" system (Server owners would be able to mandate certain character information, enforce bans, etc.)

The purpose of this is just Role-Playing and little more. It's basically a public, free medium for RP and whatever else one can do with Earthbound graphics and a public chat room. Should I make this? (Or like, attempt to)

There's a project on kickstarter called Storium or something like that. You might be interested in that. Also, if you happen to have Starcraft 2 you might want to take a gander at Cortex RP, it could give you a few ideas.
