Quick Clarification On Pvp Default

Lago, I love your term for it. It's pretty true as well.

I don't like having valuable hours of my busy life being soaked up by typing out attacks with someone who has no idea of basic physics, anatomy, or how a weapon works dodging everything. Down with the Powergame Combat. I would rather have it done in under a minute with many clicks than have to face down a roving powergaming edge-clique for 3 hours in Powergame Combat.

this is an elf skygod plot for powergame combat default. #calledit

This man speaks the truth!

Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with emoted battles and fights. But they're fundamentally cooperative: a roleplayed fight, abbreviated to "RP fight" is when the two players are cooperating OOC to emote out a battle. Every hit is a voluntary OOC concession. It requires both participants to be OOCly in it for the fun of it: both have to be willing to lose. If they aren't, then we get two terrible outcomes.

If only one is willing to back down, then the fight's decided before it's even started. The better player (the one who is willing to lose) will always come off worst whereas the player who refuses to will win every time. Does that sound right to you?

When the two combatants are actively trying to win the fight OOC then it quickly becomes Powergame Combat. Each player will push the limit of the rules as close to the mark as they can to maximise their attacks and minimise the other player's maximised attacks, each unwilling to back down. Eventually one calls the other out for powergaming. A system which outright requires OOC cooperation doesn't work when the two players are in OOC competition.

RP combat is great between consenting players that know each other and who are working towards the same goal, between players who are all willing to just go with it. In cases where this is not true (most of them under RP default) then Powergame Combat dominates. Powergame combat just stokes community hate and, something we must all remember, is the single most new player unfriendly combat mechanism we have.

PvP Default was brought in to try and eradicate Powergame Combat, instead we had RP fighting for the situations in which it works and PvP to resolve the situations in which it doesn't. The prevalence of PvP is a good indicator of how many of those situations they are. Imagine the worst, most hostile PvP fight you've ever been in. Now imagine how many times worse that would have been as a PG battle.

PvP default's had plenty of abused loopholes (run in MC, get attacked in MC, kill in MC, enter an ongoing RP fight and PvP them both) but what we need to do is to close those loopholes. What we've done here is created a new loophole (bring a buddy, claim majority) that can force Powergame Combat.

And believe me, if the massive spike in mage numbers when they had PG Default is any indication this one's going to be abused one hell of a lot. When that abuse begins to arise, I hope this clarification will be re-reviewed in light of it.

Lago said the most true thing I've ever heard.

Having two or more opponents mutually agree on a winner is giving them an all access past to Shitstorm Waterpark (LLC)

Guys. Seriously. If people start being dicks and forcing combat in 20 player situations then we will change the rule.....

Why not just change it before the inevitable happens? Even without the issues of RP default being considered, a "choose your combat" system is inherently flawed as well.

Why not change the rule so it doesn't happen?

What happened to preparing for every possibility?

Considering how worked up people are getting about this, I'm locking this thread. Before you freak out, read on.

This thread was written with the intention of clearing the air on how a rule was meant to be interpreted. Whether you agree with the clarification (and debate with me all you want that it's a "rule change", but in the end you're literally debating the most trivial point that makes absolutely no difference and has no effect on the results of this post) or not, the fact remains that there WAS confusion before, and now there is none. Additionally, of the hundreds of replies to this topic so far (whether on this thread or other feedback threads), all negative responses have been from people making assumptions and predictions about what will come. Not a single person has yet shown me or the staff any tangible evidence or RP to back up their exaggerated claims, and until that happens, we will not be changing anything.

HOWEVER.

Like I said many times already, which all seem to be getting ignored, just because we restated the rule in more understandable terms, that does NOT mean the rule is now set in stone. This is NOT the end of the world, so stop pretending like it is. As I just mentioned, if it is shown that this rule has a negative impact on the server, then it WILL be changed. This can be done through proof and screenshots or by physically showing staff members IG situations that are taking place, but it is NOT done through bickering based on opinions, ideals and possible outcomes. If anyone actually expected change to come from complaining without any solid basis to back them up, then perhaps we the staff aren't the only ones without brains.

If you truly want change, then go about it the right way; create a feedback thread with solid evidence of the negative side effects brought about by this rule, and if we the staff judge it to be necessary, we will amend it.

On a final note: I don't care how passionate or angry you are about this topic. I don't care about what you believe or don't believe, or what you think will happen or won't. There is NEVER an excuse for flaming, insulting or being a general arsehole to other players or the staff. As a reminder, if anyone is ever seen contributing nothing but hate anywhere on the forums, we will not hesitate to warn or even ban them. Don't make the mistake of thinking you're safe from punishment because people agree with your opinion on a topic.

Thread locked.
