Quick Clarification On Pvp Default

Hey everyone,

I recently came across some GMs having a discussion in Skype about an issue with the PvP default rule. Apparently, the wording of the rule led to contradicting interpretations of what it actually meant, thus causing various OOC disputes and disagreements. After reading the rule again, I can understand why such confusion came about, so I'm here to clarify it with better wording.

Note: This is a clarification of the rule, which means that I am merely restating what the rule already intends to state. I am NOT changing the rule to express something that differs from its original meaning.

Here is how the rule is stated presently:

Sometimes, you'll encounter hostile situations on the server, that need to be dealt with via combat.  When you face these situations, please heed the following rules:

Both of you must agree to the type of fighting you're using - PvP or RP fighting. If you can't agree, PvP is default. Before commencing a PvP fight, you must roleplay leading up to it, and you must also make the other player aware before you attack - e.g. an emote.

Once a fight begins, the type of combat (RP or PvP) agreed upon may not change unless everyone agrees to the change, regardless of the standing default. For instance, if an RP fight has begun and someone wants to change to PvP fighting, every participant has to agree to that change, otherwise it will remain an RP fight.

You must give a five second countdown to PvP after both parties have made clear they are ready.

The bolded sentence is the rule in question that led to the creation of this thread. According to this wording, players seem to be under the impression that any disagreement, regardless of majority, leads to PvP default. For instance, if 5 people are present and 4 wish for RP, all it takes is the remaining individual to say "No, I want PvP" and PvP will default. This is NOT how it is meant to be. The bolded section is thus being restated as follows:

"Both sides must agree to the type of fighting you're using - PvP or RP fighting. If an agreement cannot be reached, the type that is preferred by the majority of combatants will be used. If there is no majority, PvP is default. The majority is defined as the party that outnumbers the minority, even if only by 1 individual (so if 4 people want RP and 3 want PvP, the majority is in favor of RP and thus it's an RP fight)."

Essentially, this is what the original rule was intended to state. This wording means that the fight depends on the decision of the majority rather than on a unanimous decision. To prevent further confusion, here is a list of the only four scenarios which can result from this rule, as well as the fighting style that results depending on the scenario:

No discussion = PvP
Majority wants PvP = PvP
Majority want RP = RP
No majority = PvP

Hopefully this cleared up any confusion. I know that it is likely that a fair number of you will disagree with this clarification, but nonetheless this is how it was always intended to be.

What about those that, before you even start a fight go "PVP default" right off the bat without a discussion or any form of civil talk?

So if 11/20 people want a group RP fight, its an RP fight. Nah, not happening, that's kinda bad.

So 19/20 people want a group RP fight. Nah, not happening.

Couldn't agree more. May I also ask why this clarification is being issued right now and not any time earlier after the publication of the rule??

Urk. I'm inclined to agree wholeheartedly with this one.

Because people are forcing PVP on people regardless of the opposers wishes.

Players like to read into every rule LOTC has placed so they can use it to their benefit.

Also I suggest a rule that when more than 5-6 players total enter conflict, it's automatically PVP. No one wants to sift through a text fight with 10 players.

I still think that if you are robbing someone you should be forced to let them choose what fighting style they wish to partake in...

Then again, if you went "minas or die"

then

"Pvp default?" Guy says "no thanks, RP please." They go "Okay" and then probably powergame the hell out of the RP default guy anyway...

Then...again...we have ban reports for such instances.

Basically I'm tired of petty bandits who are only out for their own gain OOCly that think it's fun to rob other people while providing little to no RP, and then often times killing them after they comply anyway.

If 101/200 want a group RP fight, then it's an RP fight. That's the glory of compromise between RP and PvP default; it's likely that not everyone is jumping with joy, but at least both sides partly get what they want.

This isn't really an issue though. Here's why:

No one wants to sift through a text fight with 10 players.

As you can see by Cyndikate's post, even avid supporters of RP fighting aren't a fan of mass fights. It's incredibly unlikely that large parties will turn out with a majority in favor of RP fighting, so this is more of a theoretical possibility than it is an actual event that will happen.
