I mean, they're nasty, they claw up stuff, and they carry a ton of diseases.

That is a most excellent question! Back when I was a kid, probably 11 or 12, my family got a parrot. She was a white-fronted Amazon named Maxi.

That's her, and (probably) my fingers.

 

She was a bit on the tempermental side, and would bite if you weren't careful with her, but due to my temperament I seem to be good with animals. I usually stay quiet and still, and I suppose she appreciated that so she eventually took to me more than the rest of my family. For some reason she absolutely hated my mom and wouldn't let her anywhere near her. But we would play, she'd ride around on my shoulder pretty much all the time, and sometimes in the mornings she'd fly through the hall and land in front of my door.

 

I took a larger interest in birds because of it, and read some bird-training books and articles online, and in general just find them pretty and enjoyable. My dad started calling me the birdwhisperer, and when I was 13 and made my first blog (cringe) he suggested that for my internet handle. And so it is still! We got another bird, an African Grey named Loki, but I was never quite as close with him. I tried to let him get more attached with my mom, since the other bird hated her. I would say that during my pre-teen years, Maxi was my closest friend. Unfortunately, she died suddenly in January 2013. Loki is still alive and kicking though, and should probably be around for another few decades.

Well, let's see...

 

I believe humans are very flawed beings, so when you get a group of them together there will always be problems. Especially when the members of that group are young and still figuring themselves out. Nothing is going to change that, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that LotC has problems too. One of LotC's most prevalent problems, as I see it now, is this 'internet' mindset so many members have. Turning everything into a meme or a joke, needless hostility, and using anonymity or "it's the internet, get over it" as an excuse to be jerks.

 

I don't think the community is entirely terrible, of course. It sometimes seems a little less friendly than it was when I joined, but the people here do have a way of surprising you. I've met some fantastic friends thanks to LotC, and most of the 'problem players' just need to grow up a little bit or gain some empathy. That's the key, I believe. Don't be a jerk and show empathy to others. That's the golden rule, in fact.

 

 

As for you specifically, I don't think I've ever roleplayed with you, but perhaps soon!
