[Feedback] Degeneration Of Roleplay

The Feedback is about exactly what the title says; a degenerating roleplay and general atmosphere and growth of flame, jabs, and trolling interrupting roleplay. This thread is half to ask for a crackdown, and, admittedly, half to vent.

 

I've decided, after a while, that it is necessary to bring to attention the current state of the Roleplay on LotC. This problem could be fixed, I think, with a crackdown on inappropriate behavior on the server and forums. It is Trolling, "says (blank)", and jabs at roleplay posts and threads in the roleplay forums has become nigh unbearable as of late. As I've not had time to log into the server for a couple of weeks, I do not know the specifics of roleplay on it, but the forums have rapidly degenerated into what appears to be a mess of jabs that only hurt those they are pointed at.

 

Rules in the thread "The New and Improved Forum Rules", located here, I've seen broken and only recently warned against, and in few numbers. Threads that have come out of certain groups, like Adunia, Fenn, the Dwarves, and others (including Humans) have been subject to the trolly jabs of people who do not always have a character of that race but pretend to and not only disrupt serious comments on the thread, but also lead into more jabs and can seriously hurt others' feelings.

Rules I feel have been broken (Correct me if I am wrong):

 

Rule Ten: Do not, under any circumstances; troll, flame, cause trouble, or behave inappropriately.

This rule was covered in Harold's thread here where he brings to light trolling on the forums and the server, and which brings up the next couple of rules.

 

Rule Thirteen and Sixteen are two rules I view as connected, as one leads to the other. Attacks on groups I've noticed becoming more common in the Roleplay forums, especially in minority groups such as Fenn. Although I will not point out specific posts unless asked, these posts are attacks against the groups they do not support for "spreading of roleplay" and, somehow simultaneously, being laughably small as a group. I do not see any inefficiencies in the administration team, and I feel it has generally done a good job, but a crackdown is in order, because many times rule 13 is broken a breach of rule 16 is also incurred, players causing drama with other playerbases unnecessarily, and it really is not fun for anybody but those making the jabs and those that agree with the aforementioned instigators. Serious players are often demoralized by insulting and argumentative posts that seek only to "mess" with the group injured.

 

Final rules; 19 and 20:

Whereas some insult the group in perfectly acceptable, roleplay posts, many instead decide to make half-OOC comments in which all they do is screw with the player in question. Warnings, if they do not prevent the player from continuing, I feel, must be replaced with something more deterring, such as one or two day bans, in increasing increments. I am not asking for anybody to be banned, just protection of those that do not wish problems on LotC will affect the composition of mature players. Ignorance is also, as the rules state, not an excuse.

 

 

A composition of points and feedback:

-Stricter or Harsher (or both) enforcement of the Server and Forum rules, globally. Radicalizing crackdowns on rule breaks for at least a time, I believe, might help.

-Removal of any jabs, trolly, or OOC instigation posts on threads.

-Not letting off anybody with less than would normally because of ignorance (Rule 20).

-Basically a long winded reminder of the rules that the moderators, well, make sure are effective. That is what a moderator does, no?

 

This is not an attempt to backseat moderate, nor a plea for help to integrate new players, but instead a (hopefully) mature inquiry to whether the current problems on the server will be addressed or not. It is asked that anybody posting on this thread refrains from trolly comments, OOC jabs, or the like. A globalized effort within the server is hoped for, as that is what I percieve will be necessary to return LotC to a stable state.

 

Responses are appreciated, as perhaps I am not seeing the correct view of the entire server.

I've actually been working with a few players and as many moderators who have given time to go over a nicely fleshed out definition of exactly what trolling is so that we can say with a fair amount of exactness what is considered trolling. Temp map is temp map. People decide their lack of permanent items means they just shouldn't try and do any RP that sticks.

Simply put: yup. The RP forums are a mess, and it'll take a lot to put them back to right. However, people will whine and rage so having the rest of the community back up the moderators would help.

It might be worth noting that many people on the server simply prefer less serious, less drawn out, more trolly roleplay. I'm certainly not one of those people, but I've seen that opinion explicitly expressed enough now to be convinced that some people DO want that.

 

There are places where you can mind more serious roleplay. They might be harder to find, sure... but they exist. I think it's best to just keep in mind that there are separate spaces for both types of players.

The temp map is no darn excuse. The RP I had when I first started on the little island of non-canon players after asulon was corrupted was some of the most quality RP I've ever had.

Some people are honestly just that unwilling to make good RP.

On that note

There is a place for non serious RP and it's called a faction PVP server.

I've come to the conclusion that this deterioration of roleplay stems from the fact that we are on such a small, temporary map that no one holds dear. That is why war breaks out so easily, everyone is always raiding and fighting, etcetera. I do not think it will fix itself until we are on a solid, permanent map.
