~*~Snow Elf Lore & History~*~

~History~

-Important Locations-

The Old Mountain, an undisclosed location where the leaders of the Mali’Fenn have been laid to rest when they believe they have achieved true strength.

The cities of Ice and Snow, the former being the old capital of the two. One day the entire city of Ice vanished, however, which has led to a series of events.

-How they were named-

In Ancient times, they were known as the Mali'Fenn, or Ice elves. This changed when the capital of the two cities, Ice, disappeared and only Snow was left. The Ice Elves, using the common name of their town to represent their culture, named themselves the Snow Elves in common.

-The Story of the Beginning of the Way-

Malin had lines that would become the Three Races of the Elven. What most do not know, however, is that hidden within the line of the High Elven was a gene that would change others that had to do with it. This gene manipulated certain aspects of the secluded branch of the High Elves, changing almost all of their eyes a pale blue and making their skin pale and cool, reminiscent of an Autumn breeze. It is passed down from parent to child, but is so rare only 5 natural-born cases have been known. The first of the Mali'Fenn, Icellion, was called The First of the Snow by his great grandchildren, for his relation to all of the Mali'Fenn. His people built two cities, Ice and Snow, named after their favorite elements. These two names were in common, not Elven, and it must be known that it was so, as this was later important.

The two town-cities lived prosperously in the North, completely isolated from most of civilization. These towns worshipped Wyrvun, once a force of good, who would later become the Ondnarch that has become one of the strongest of the enemies of the Brathmordakin. The two cities were said to have existed around circa 300-500, but much has changed since that time. In a time believed to be, by the Mali’Fenn, to be around the end of the Fifth Century, a giant roar and a huge blizzard hit the cities and, to the horror of many, the entire city of Ice and all of its inhabitants disappeared from the face of Aegis. The remaining city-state of Snow was filled with scared citizens and doomsayers, and in an attempt to calm them about what the only occasional Dwarven trader called “Ondnarch”, the Grand Prince at the time, Icellion IV, issued the order to call themselves Snow Elves, after their city-state’s name Snow, to prevent themselves from being related to the fallen Aengul of ice.

After that event, the Mali’Fenn of Snow, believing their god had abandoned them, isolated themselves to their city-state for almost a thousand years. When Ibless again rose, his minions attacked, and, having very little military experience at the time, the Mali’Fenn were forced to flee. The Snow Elves boarded the boats of the four races, keeping to the lowest of the decks, where the sea cooled it and the lack of torches made it comfortable enough for them, and in Asulon went on skiffs to an island far off the coast with weather that was cold and wet.

In Asulon, the last of the Icellion line, Icellion XI, died of heat stroke in his garbs made to survive blizzards in the Deep Cold. What followed was a power struggle that killed off about a quarter of the remaining Snow Elves. The power struggle was based off of claims to the throne; different lineages had, at different times, been second or third in line and wished to use that to become the Royal House. Major powers including the house with the strongest claim Tundrak, the religious Vun (named after the latter half of the Aengul Wyrvun’s name), the militant Atmorice, and the mercantile Wyr’Sen. House Tundrak, defeating House Atmorice’s leader in a duel to first blood, made it a vassal and using the combined strength of Tundrak and Atmorice went on to defeat the Vun and the Wyr’Sen in a series of civil wars on the islands they inhabited until all was under Tundrak command.

The current rulers of the Mali’Fenn belong to the House of Tundrak, or House Tundrak. They are the most direct descendants of Grand Prince Icellion I, and include famous figures in the Snow Elven culture, most notably Tundrak I, who was able to consolidate his power by making other houses become its vassals, such as his sister house, House Aergon. Other vassals include the noble House of Atmorice, and the recent noble House of  Glacoria.

Grand Prince Tundrak II ascended the throne upon his father’s death. He immediately set about to create a stable nation, vassalizing under the Grand-Kingdom of Urguan and recreating the Princedom of Fenn. The town of Frostfall was built, serving as a capital. Grand Prince Tundrak II also set up the Grand Council of The Princedom of Fenn, spreading his power.

Soon, their first trial was upon them when the Kingdom of Oren and Krugmar went to war with the Grand-Kingdom of Urguan. The war was known as the Second Dwarf-Human War, and the Snow Elven Ivae’Fenn fought valiantly in the trenches alongside their Dwarven comrades. At the Battle of Indagolaf, the Decterum’s charge was turned back by the Ivae’Fenn, who shot most of them off the bridge.

Eventually, it was time for peace between the mortal nations. Ondnarch’s armies approached from the South, and Setherien’s armies from the North. The Snow Elven Ivae’Fenn fought alongside the Dwarven Legion against Ondnarch. At the Battle of Kal’Azgoth, the Snow Elven Ivae’Fenn were the first to break through and charge into the city, slaughtering cultists in their path. At the battle, Ondnarch was purified and returned to his Aengul form of Wyrvun. The Snow Elves once again began to pray to Wyrvun, as they still do today.

This was not the end of their troubles, however. A Harbinger of the North settled in the Princedom of Fenn, building an icy tower with tendrils and bloodshards. The land began to become corrupted as the Dwarven Legion and Snow Elven Ivae’Fenn fought back. Grand Prince Tundrak II, knowing Frostfall would be destroyed, began construction on the large underground city of Khazad’Karrzark, or Hold of Thunder.

~Physical Attributes~

Mali’Fenn have pale, sometimes even bluish skin. Their eyes can be any shade of blue, purple, or grey. Their skin is slightly cold to the touch, but not an icy cold; more like the cool breeze one might feel on an autumn day. This change in skin temperature is barely noticeable in most cases; in some, however, it is almost impossible to miss. Mali'Fenn tend to be much hairier than the typical elf due to their inhabitance of northern climates it is not unusual to see one sporting facial hair or a beard. The cold bothers them little, and they are capable of feeling normal in colder temperatures, as their body systems are affected by the mutated gene to continue working in colder temperature, but not in warm. As such, heat affects them much more than it does the other races. If they remain in the heat too long, they will get very sick. Fire leaves more serious burns on them than it does any other race, making it their main weakness. The ears of the Mali’Fenn are pointier and much shorter than the average elf. Their other details are very similar to those of the other Elves, though they are generally shorter by a good foot or a foot and a half, their tallest being about normal and their shortest being about the same height as humans along with them being genrally shorter they tend to be stockier than typical elves as well being slightly thinner than humans. Their hair colors range from almost any natural color to a light shades of blue.

Snow Elven society, which will be discussed later, has led to many Snow Elves being of generally similar strength. Snow elves are pale creatures, they tend to have light tattoos in pale inks of light blue these tattoos are used to venerate Wyrvun. However exotic markings of crude and non-Wyrvun related nature are extremely frowned upon for being crass. In terms of snow elf jewelery light ear rings and decorative braces on the arms are the most common occurrences with cloaks of fur being used to designate the status and wealth of a Mali'Fenn trims of varying shades of blue are used to show higher status with blue dye being very rare in the Tundra. Their noses and other facial features are of average size or slightly smaller than one might think normal among elves. The smaller and skinnier noses are seen as beautiful, those with larger noses, which is rare, are not as likely to get a soul mate as easily if they were chosen based on looks. Snow elves view the length of ones ears a sign of noble blood with the members of noble houses having unusually short ears often emphasized by tasteful but expensive ear rings. Looks are not always emphasized when talking about each other Mali'Fenn tend to look towards the capability to provide for a family when looking for a soul mate Mali'Fenn with high degrees of skill or important positions are viewed as more desirable due to their capability to provide a stable home in which to raise a Talonnii.

~Combat~

The Mali’Fenn tend to stick to the tradition Elven combat style, which uses bows, and spears. However, some Mali’Fenn tend to use weapons made of ice. They are more efficient in the chilled environments of the South, or any wintry conditions for that matter. Swords and daggers of varying sizes are also used, though not as commonly as the spears, bows, and naginatas. Their weapons can be made of anything from ice, to stone, to iron. Iron weapons are rare and valuable, as the Mali’Fenn do not know how to forge iron. The forging of iron involves fire, making Mali’Fenn incapable of doing so even if they wanted to. They can, however, obtain iron weapons through trade. In terms of tactics Mali'Fenn prefer to battle from horseback exercising fluid formations using archery to weaken enemy infantry formations then finishing them off with a calvary charge by the elite Faersu'Fenn. The mounts of the Faersu'Fenn are rugged shaggy horses that feed on the lichens of the Tundra these hardy beasts are fast and light however they lack the overwhelming mass of a human knight's destrier this has resulted in an emphasis on harrassment tactics gradually weakening the foe through quick raids and lightening assaults.

-Materials-

-Wood-

The Mali’Fenn use wood to make the handles and hilts of their cheaper and less effective weapons. Weapons with wooden hilts and handles are not considered as valuable as other weapons.  The wood they use is from the spruce trees that can be found by venturing out into the snowy forests near the mountains. ((MC representation: Spruce wood/Sticks))

-Stone-

Stone is used to make the handles and hilts of the more effective and expensive weapons. It is regarded as more valuable in Mali’Fenn standards, and is more durable than wood. However, it is heavier, making wood the better choice for some weapons. Stone is also used as the arrowheads, spear blades, and hammer portion of the warhammer for cheaper weapons. ((MC representation: Cobblestone))

-Iron-

Though not forgeable by the Mali’Fenn, they can come to wield weapons of iron by trading for them with the other races. It is stronger than stone, yet weaker than ice. Iron armor is also obtainable by trade, and is considered very valuable. ((MC representation: Iron))

-Ice-

The Mali’Fenn discovered a way to wield the powers of ice in a very effective manner. They learned how to shape it to their will by pouring water into molds, and they made the ice stronger by means of freezing it in extremely cold temperatures and adding a bit of magic. This made the ice more durable and sharper than iron, and weapons of ice were very, very valuable and rare. Ice could be used to form arrowheads, the blades of swords and spears, and the hammer portion of warhammers. Ice can also be encrusted into iron armor for decoration and to make it stronger in key places. ((MC representation: Diamond/Diamond Axe/Iron))

-Weaponry-

-Spear-

The spear is the most common weapon of the Mali’Fenn, and is used by their military forces and hunters alike. It is meant to be more of a long range weapon because of its reach, and is used for thrusting. The shaft of the spear is either made of spruce wood or stone. The Mali’Fenn also use a different type of spear called a javelin, which is used to throw at their enemies. The shaft of the javelin/spear tends to be made of wood so that it is light. When the javelins and spears are crafted they add a small spike at the end of the handle for balance, and for grip.

-Bow-

The bow an arrow is one of the most common weapons used by the Mali’Fenn, and is one of two ranged weapons they use, the javelin being the other. It is made of wood, just like the bows of their Elven cousins. The arrowheads are made of either stone, iron, or in some very isolated cases, ice. The shafts are made of spruce wood, and there are feathers on the tail to make sure the arrow flies true.

-Tomahawk-

Tomahawks as used for close quarter combat in very few situations. Most of the time it is ceremonial and used by the leadership of the Mali’Fenn.

-Dagger-

No daggers are used by the majority of the Snow Elves. A hunter might use it, once in a while.

-Sword-

The gladius is a common weapon of the Mali’Fenn, and is usually used as a secondary weapon. It has medium length, and it intended for stabbing more than slashing. The hilt is made of either stone or wood, and the blade is made of either stone, iron, or ice.

-Shield-

Shields are not very commonly used amongst the Mali’Fenn. They take on the traditional Elven shape, but they are usually stone grey or ice white or blue. The shields have divots on the sides where a spear can be thrust through when a shield wall is formed. The shield is usually made of stone, and is sometimes encrusted with veins of ice for decoration and added strength.

-Armor-

Snow Elven armor is similar to those of the other elves, consisting of overlapped layers of plate. The helmet usually has a decorative spike or horns on top. Armor is usually made of a combination of stone and ice, and some hue of blue.

~Magic~

The Mali’Fenn have built their own branch of water evocation over the years, for urban purposes. These are not completely different from normal water evocation, but the focus is on ice and the cold. ((Basically a different name, same purpose.))

-Fenn’Thulith’Bilok-

Fenn’Thulith’Bilok (Elven for ice metal creation) is known by very few Mali’Fenn, and is one of the most sacred and secretly kept practices of the Snow Elves. It is the Snow Elven method of forging where they create the strong ice used in the most valuable and effective of Mali’Fenn weaponry. Making the ice sharper and harder than iron is a very, very hard practice, which takes many, many years to master. However the process relies on the frigid temperatures of the snow elves native lands rendering Fenn'Thulith'Bilok weapons useless if they are taken out of the tundra without special enhancements such as thaumium cores to preserve the low temperatures.

~Culture~

The culture of the Mali’Fenn is centered around ice, snow, and the cold. They worship the same divine entities as their Elven cousins. However, they prefer the company of Dwarves and Northerners over the company of other Elves, as Dwarves and Northerners both live in the snow and respect the cold. This makes the Mali’Fenn feel closer to them rather than the Mali’Mira. They call themselves Mali’Fenn and they call all other Elves Mali’Mira, Mira being Elven for warm, and Fenn being Elven for snow. Pastimes and festivities are often, and they are generally a cheery bunch of people. Music is not as large a part of Mali’Fenn culture as one may think; it is certainly there, just not so much as food and celebration of life. The Snow elf community are very open and lighthearted towards one another, and friendly to most nations and races. Although, if snow elves feel threatened, they will become territorial and may attack if the foreign power gets too far. Snow elves are known for their wise elders, these men and women are serious about how one acts, and it is expected to not fool around too much, but a little fun here and there is accepted by most. Snow elves are very close, they will almost always fight together until death separates them, they are very loving to one another and will do what they can to protect the people they love and care for the most. They are also very respectful, especially to elders, because they have the most wisdom out of all the snow elves. Respect also goes to the Grand Prince or Grand Princess, and the princes or princesses of Fenn. When a Mali’Fenn passes away, they are honored ceremoniously by not only their family, but by the Government and the society. They are taken outside, where they are laid on a bed of wool and silk, then Fenn’Thulith’Bilok is used to freeze their body, so that they do not rot and maintain their natural beauty. This is done so that their body does not go from their original state when they died. If a Mali’Fenn goes missing, an ice statue of them is place where their grave would be if or when they are found. Snow Elves have also been known to combine words of the ancient tongue for convenience (ex. Fenn’Thulith’Bilok, etc.) Remember, Snow Elves anger easily.

-Popular Pastimes-

Mali’Fenn, when not fighting or focusing on surviving, have multiple pastimes. Sorcerers and Sorceresses of Ice and Snow make many things of their favorite material; it has been known to range from ice sculptures to even instruments of pure ice, depending on the skill of the magi using it. Magic is not feared at all within the Mali’Fenn population; mages are venerated for their skill and ability to use it. Mali’Fenn, despite people thinking them cold, delight in having conversations with each other. They have a large amount of social groups that mark different hobbies and friendships within their community, but all are intertwined and talk on a regular basis. Their low numbers make it vital that they do so. Magic has become a vital part of Mali’Fenn culture; with it they not only build temporary objects, but express themselves. Proposals are made in a fashion with the ice, using it to form delicate roses and solid poems.

-Festivals and Holidays-

Festivals and holidays are almost always held in the season of the Deep Cold. Different holidays are for different reasons, but the two main ones are:

The Festival of Ice(every fourth 1st of the Deep Cold)

This holiday is that of their favorite season’s coming; it celebrates the new year. They celebrate their lives and their culture’s survival. Usually punctuated with vibrant displays of ice sculptures and feasts of snow elven delicacies such as raw cattle meat imported from milder climes spiced with rare lichens found in the tundras and mountains surrounding them.

The Feast of Icellion

In remembrance of the life of Icellion, they hold a feast on the day of his last breath to commemorate his long life and large amounts of achievements.

Various other feasts are held throughout the year, marking the first of each season and important events in the past, such as:

Traditional feasts and festivities: The Harvest Feast, The First of the Year, The First Day of the Touching upon Anthos, and The Grand Prince’s Day (Which changes based on the current Grand Prince’s birthday).

Adopted feasts and festivities: Krugsmas, Autumn Festival.

-Society-

The Mali’Fenn society is a rigidly defined culture with one's status among the Mali'Fenn being dictated by ones value to the people. Those of the noble houes are part of the Laurir'Fenn class the highest level of Mali'Fenn society they are responsible for the wellbeing of all Mali'Fenn and are expected to lay down their lives for the greater good of the people. The Laurir'Fenn are responsible for the defense of the realm as well as the culture of the Mali'Fenn, Laurir'Fenn establish laws and decrees to help guide and improve the lives of their fellow Mali'Fenn. Follow the Laurir'Fenn are the Laureh'Mahnih the chosen wall of the Mali'fenn the members of this class are all warriors responsible for the defense of the people at any cost. The Laureh'Mahnih serve as the army and police for the Mali'Fenn following the Laurir'Fenn into battle Laureh'Mahnih are expected to lay down their lives in defense of any Mali'Fenn in danger failure to do so would result in a disgrace ejection from the Laureh'Mahnih. Following the Laureh'Mahnih come the Medi'Fenn the helpers, this class holds the elite cratsmen and skilled Mali'Fenn ranking within the Medi'Fenn is determined entirely by achievement and skill and the Medi'Fenn often challenge one another to competitions of Ice carving to determine the most skilled and artisitc Medi'Fenn. Mali'Fenn place an incredible amount of weight on personal achievement for anyone to claim superiority due to blood they would be shunned and looked down upon by the Mali'Fenn as pathetic and weak, However bragging about one's acheivements is considered poor taste if an achievement is o a high enough prestige then the other Mali'Fenn will publicly acknowledge it.

-Architecture-

Mali'Fenn architecture is heavily reliant on ice and snow with stone and wood being used to supplement structures. Due to the freezing climates of the snow elves homeland the Ice used in the construction of homes freezes to a strength stronger than steel making the Lin'Fenn of the Mali'Fenn extremely durable. Mali'Fenn being quite creative enjoy living in a beautiful city and thusly regard every construction project as an oppotunity to show off their skill in the humblest way possible. Snow elves favor soaring arches of ice in their construction giving their buildings a feel of soaring, buttresses and pillars are quite popular as well. Large curving halls of ice are very popular in Mali'Fenn homes, they are often decorated with artistic icicles with snow flakes bas relief. Mali'Fenn build soaring towers by crafting elaborate icicles then hollowing out the interiors. Windows are made of a very clear thin ice pane crafted only by the most skilled Medi'Fenn

-Food-

The cold temperatures of the Southern Mountains have also led to many changes in food and festivities. A major difference is in what they eat. Food is prominent in many of the households of the Mali’Fenn, and their staples are easily recognizable. Potatoes and Carrots line the dinner tables of most households, the availability of them in the cold heavily contributing to their use. These are often prepared in a variety of ways, including being made into a stew with meat broth and a side of bread. The food least available is steak, which is hard to obtain in a tundra, but it is used in the halls of the lords. Food is almost always prepared raw. Their inability to go within ten feet of fire has forced this change in their cultural foods, and they have learned to enjoy it as such. The only time it is not prepared raw is when there is a feast; in such a case, a deep pit will be dug and the fire prepared at the bottom. The food is lowered onto the fire, and, once cooked, will be covered in ice or frosted by water evocationists until it is cold enough to be to the liking of the Mali’Fenn. Delicacies such a sugar flavored icicles on sticks are often enjoyed by guards as well as carrots spices with tundra lichen then salted with rock salt from the mountains.

-Religion-

The Mali’Fenn worship the ancient Aengul named Wyrvun, who was transformed into Ondnarch, yet purified again at the Battle of Kal’Azgoth. They worship Wyrvun with a fervor, their religion being called the Temple of Wyrvun.

~Government~

The Mali’Fenn call their government the Grand Princedom, under a single ruler with different houses taking on different roles based on importance and merit.

All Grand Princes and Grand Princesses will come directly from the line of Tundrak. Male rulers shall be known as Grand Prince Tundrak II or III, depending on how many Great Princes there have been before them. The spouse of the Grand Prince/Princess will be called the Prince/Princess Regent, but they will have little ‘real power’.The family members of the Grand Prince are Princes and Princesses.

[Constitution still under construction]

-Military-

After the fall of their once glorious Princedom, they decided they never wished to experience the death of their kin; they decided to never fight unless necessity demanded it. The High Prince employes his most loyal advocate, the position of General. The chosen General controls the army, and guard force. But, if the appointed General so wishes he may choose to employ another another fellow advocate, the position of ‘Commander.’ The commander of the guard does as the title says, he leads the guard force and a company.

The Mali’Fenn first decided to stay out of wars because of the chaos and destruction, but recently, they decided to make up an organized military, called the Ivae’Fenn, or the Bringers of Ice. They fight for the princedom and protect it at all cause. An application must be sent to the general of the army, and he or she will accept or deny, according to the person. The Mali’Fenn saw that they could not just ‘stay out’ of wars and foreign affairs.

~Reproduction & Aging~

Mali’Fenn are cursed with low fertility, like all other Elves. Mali’Fenn are not forced to ((FTB)) while in wedlock. So, they can produce children while outside of it. But, if they do produce children they are due marriage, as it is accustomed to have children while married. So, if a couple does not marry and have children they must be married, and, if a couple is married, they shall have no punishments. If, however, a couple has a child and does not marry, they are to be stopped from normal conversation until they make the decision to marry. Continually resisting marriage would probably eventually end in the unmarried couple leaving the Princedom, and the child would be taken away and kept by the Princedom, and given to another family. The couple would be looked down upon by society, as it is very unusual and odd to have a baby while not married. Based on the severity of the case the couple may be banished. . .

When Mali’Fenn marry another sub-race of elf, their child shall retain all the physical features of the Mali’Fenn. But, mentally the child can go either way, as they can have either the mother’s mind or father’s mind. Therefore, there is no such thing as a half Snow Elf. Either someone is a Snow Elf, or they aren’t. Should a Mali’Fenn marry a non-elf and attempt to have a child, which has never been done before, it is almost certain that the child would die of miscarriage of some sort.

Mali’Fenn, like their elven cousins, live very long lives. They age in centuries, and physical appearance wise, they do not seem to age beyond the age of 20. At the age of 150 they are considered fully grown. Their physical and mental strength depends on how much they exercise their mind and body, just like in all other beings.

Good story, bad execution. Like the Leonardo Dicaprio Romeo and Juliet. He killed that movie. . .in a bad way

Eh.. not bad.. but I still think there needs to be a greater racial dimorphism than just a few color changes. Body temperature is not really too interesting, at least to me, and the small nose thing is a nice touch, but its overall rather weak.

Not bad for something developing though

Having a well roleplayed culture that maintains unique differences with that of others is quite fine. One would note, however, that new races will not be accepted as per the words of the lore team and administration. If you wish to create another magic, seperate lore must be written for it and it must be posted to permit evaluation. Contrary to popular belief, snow elves are merely a separate culture; they maintain no differences in terms of physical characteristics from normal high elves.

They can RP physical differences if they wish, Smithers. I'd advise they drop the "longer sharper ears" thing though, as long ears is a high elf characteristic which has been about for a long time. I'd advise shorter than normal ears: After all, ears let off heat and they live in the snow!

Furthermore, it can only be a belief. This lore isn't possible from an OOC perspective. Not that I don't like it— The lore is great.

I wrote the storyline to be a folklore type story, in which (As assumed that Snow Elves live generally shorter lives from both the cold and constant fighting and infighting), older generations told stories to younger, in which the story became more warped each time until it became what this post says.

The ear thing wasn't there before, and I agree that the ears should be shorter not longer.

I've not worked on the lore since the project really got going though Narthok, and recommend you do the following;

Remove Fenn'Thulik'Bok; it was nice, but also never accepted.

Remove cavalry charges; although Snow Elves have recently started using them, the harsh climate they come from couldn't support horses. Instead, the Fenn would rely on a traditional foot soldier tactic.

Edit the Architecture and Military Sections.

Add to the backstory.

If I still have access to the doc I can do it myself, though.
