WE DON'T NEED A BULLSHIT STAFF TEAM TO DO THE PLAYERS' JOB.

Seriously, though, I was instrumental in the dismantling of both the Guide and Mentor team. I worked hard in both those teams, and we accomplished very little. The existence of such a team merely served as a crutch for the rest of the playerbase - if a group of players is pre-designated to be helpful, why should I be? Not my opinion, it's just what happened.

If anything, this should be the AT's responsibility already.

I've kinda got to back Aislin here. My recollection of the Guides was them throwing their badges around.

Well, I won't even pretend that there is any merit in defending the Guides of the past. They were shitty and problematic. That being said, the role of Guides in the past was to sit in help chat, write guides, and just generally help people. The new Mentors, while admittedly not super different, really only have the role of reaching out to recently accepted players and assisting them find a home and work in RP if they want that help. The old Guides didn't do that at all, at least not of their own volition. Obviously we shouldn't repeat past problems, but trying something with a similar goal but very different execution isn't a terrible idea. Sure, it might fail horribly, but it also might now.

Also, I don't know what this insinuation is that LotC still has a bunch of extraneous teams. Really, there's only one team that LotC could reasonably do without, and there's literally zero chance that that team will be removed ever (not gunna say it, but it's not hard to figure out which team's job is already done by another team as well). The rest both stand to provide major benefits to the server, and are doing alright right now.

Contradiction?

If you guys made new players spawn in their racial capital instead of some dumb ******* Cloud Temple this wouldn't be an issue because nations do this every single day with new players. More often than not, noobs just have no ******* clue where to go.

Further thoughts on Cloud Temple can be found here

I'd call Aislin a repwhore (he is) but he actually says **** worthy of getting +1'd. Do this instead of adding another pretty tag to the game.

Shouldn't be considered staff. All players should aspire to being mentors anyway, but if you want a new forum title then sure, why not add the shinies to it.

In the time of the Guides there was a Mentor team. They were a sub-team in the Guides with no fancy tags or anything like that, and their job was the same as what it is now with their revival. It failed and was removed around the same time the Guides were, IIRC. I was on it for a while and will tell you first hand it really was a pretty bad team.

Though, as I've said before, I do hope it works this time around.

I was a Mentor as well, and we weren't explicitly tasked with reaching out to new players and acclimating them. We just basically did Guide **** but weren't Guides and were led by Sparrow. This still has a more narrow focus and competent leadership, which the Mentors lacked in both regards. Can't promise that this will end up better, but I think condemning it because Guides failed isn't necessarily an adequate assessment.
