THE DIET OF SALTSTONE, 1552

On the 9th of the First Seed in the year of our Lord, 1522, an assembly had been held in order to resolve the succession crisis within the Duchy of Courland. With substantial evidence it has been determined that the noble Alexander Staunton is the trueborn brother and heir to the late Duke Andrew Staunton. Alexander Staunton, now named Duke of Courland and invested with the comital realms of Oesel and Curon, has fulfilled his oaths of fealty and homage as proof of leal service to the empire and is raised to the peerage.

The assembled lords did concede that the status of Kraken's Watch was contested between the House of Vanir and the Duke Courland due to machinations of the late Duke before his self-imposed death. Despite breaching imperial peace in their hostilities towards another, the two parties were pardoned at the behest of His Grace, the Archchancellor Rothesay, who imposed martial law upon the land of Curon on the first week of the First Seed to restore public order. The Northern households were summoned towards Saltstone and instructed to recite their grievances upon another. While both parties cited their historical difficulties, a peace was reached, with Britannus Vanir named Baron of Kraken's Watch and pledging fealty to the Duke Courland. In turn, the Vanirs would rescind and avow their holdings in Erochland, reclaiming their ancestral seat after over twenty-five years, and vow to aid and serve the Duke Courland as his rightful vassal.

To compensate the Duke's lost holding, the crown pardoned his retainer, hedge knight Demetrios Palaiologos, for his impersonation of imperial gentry and conferred him status as a knight of the Order of the Red Dragon. The Ser was styled 'the Inquisitor' on behalf of his feats of valor and zeal in the Alsacian Inquisition and afforded the fief of Vijland in northern Curon.

Finally, the Emperor affirmed imperial law in denying the inheritance of the late Duke's unborn child. The crown enforces agnatic-cognatic primogeniture upon its vassals. Babes in the womb cannot stand to inherit and are passed over due to their incapabilities.

IN NOMINE DEI,

His Imperial Majesty John II Sigismund of the House of Horen, by the Grace of GOD, Holy Orenian Emperor and rightful Emperor of Aeldin, forever August, Apostolic King in Oren, of Savoy, Kaedrin, Haense, Renatus and Salvus, Defender of the Faith, Duke of the Crownlands, Krajia, Avar and Cascadia, Count of Pruvia, Alamar, Thesmer, and Thelen, Sovereign of Humanity, Suzerain of the Elves and Protector of the Dominion of Malin, etcetera.

Svatobor nods, patting his niece's enlarged stomach as she nears birthing. A boy of Staunton name, but one who will be of true kosak culture.

Sylas Myrrdin sits in his hovel in Drusco, hearing of this diet from a friend. "Perhaps, as a steward, I will be able to attend these kinds of things," He chuckles, "If I can rid myself of this damn lute!" He pulls out the instrument he had just damned, strumming a new tune on the strings.

The cries of a new born babe echo through the walls of the Hetman's Ostrog. Whilst the Emperor's words of succession wrought true, the pretender Aleksei Staunton, though an infant, had entered the political fray.
