A Promise Broken

Argontum

The door of the farmhouse was slammed open as Argontum Felstad slowly walked in. He closed the door and sat himself in a nearby chair, exhausted. Breathing heavily, he slowly raised his left hand to see what he had just got, an emerald ring. He grinned and sighed in relief in thinking that he will give it to Alice, his lover. He slowly observed it as he placed the ring into his pouch. He yawned and closed his eyes, slowly losing his consciousness as he went to sleep. He then felt a nudge and was awoken. His eyes slowly opened as he lifted his head, going to see the person that woke him up.

"Hey, wake up, come on."

Argontum glanced towards the origin of the voice. He blinked in attempting to adjust his eyes to look.

"Still not awake yet?"

"Alice?" Argontum called out as he rubbed his eyes. It was indeed Alice. He really cared and loved her, just like every other would do to theirs. Still rubbing his eyes, he reached out for his pouch, going to take the ring out and waited for the right time as he held it tightly.

"Umm... Argo... I have something to tell you."

"And what is it?" He yawned as he leaned closer to listen.

"I found another..." Alice sighed in depression, and clearly she had a hard time trying to tell Argo what she was about to tell.

"Another what?"

"Another man."

Argontum stared at her, slightly astonished. He gritted his teeth and sighed. "And..?" He said to her, half expecting what she was about to tell him.

"I'm leaving you."

He looked at her in the eyes, dumbfounded, then tilted his head downwards, covering his face with both hands as they rested on his lap. Tears began running down his eyes, though Alice might not see it she could tell.

"Please don't cry." She told him as she as well, began to shed tears. Argo lifted his head to look at her, his eyes red and his cheeks wet and he gave no response.

"You're still my best friend." She hugged him tightly.

"But you're more than a friend to me." He slowly pushed Alice away from him.

"I-I know, and I'm terribly sorry for that." Argo, however, gave no response and instead stood up and slowly walked towards the door. The ring he bought for her was still in his left hand. Alice turned away and covered her face.

"You don't need to be, it's my fault for not being there after all. I hope you are happy with this decision." He rested his hand on the doorknob and glanced at her. A faint smile was forming on his face as he slowly opened the door. "I'm sorry I can't be the man you wanted. Thank you for everything." His left hand slowly opened and the ring fell to the ground. The sound echoed throughout the house as Argo opened the door and closed it as he left. Alice lifted her head up and looked around to find the origin of the noise. She gasped as she found the emerald ring on the floor, and she took it and held it tightly as more tears were running down her eyes.

"I'm sorry..." She sobbed as her grasp on the ring got tighter. From the point forward, Argontum was never seen around the farmhouse, not by anyone.

(this was the only thing that played in my mind out of all this.)

A small mali stands as she shakes her cloak off dust and dirt.

"A wise man once said. You can be deceived if you trust too much, but live in torment if you don't trust enough."

She taps her staff as she continues to wander off.
