Why does this note smell like fish?

As you approach the bulletin board, your eyes scanning over the numerous notes and decrees pinned to it, there might be one that caught your eye. It was penned in thick black ink, some of the words splotched.  None the less, the penmanship was flowing and elegant. It read as follows, 

 

"My name is Simon Durand. I'm nothing more than a simple man. I have no skills to speak of. I know no one or anything. But,I have the willingness to learn and submit myself to the teachings of anyone who has knowledge of alchemy and would take me as their pupil. I live deep in the Green District right on one of the main roads. You will not be able to find a more dedicated and willing student and I hope this note finds my future teacher.
