THE CIRCULAR LETTER

“To A. Myre, my humble friend and brother-in-arms,

To speak of our Affair in Reza, I write this;

Upon the Summer’s Sun so High,

We came upon the grand Prikaz to seek

What has been by them declined:

Justice for the pure and humble meek.

The banners unfurled and trumpets called

For the common man to be gathered.

On this day they sought their due,

For the pains they suffered and slaved

by the boot of those sadistic few

‘Harken!’ says I and the people came

But in my mind I envisioned it

What is to be and not?

Liberty - tormentor of my dreams
Back into my memories releasing
Those innumerable, happy storms
It threw its ghost against the leeward islands
And the gales, indeterminable
Fought the free

‘Tyranny,’ said I, ‘you thing of enslavement,’
‘How could the zephyr wash you clean?’
Of dragon black, and dragon gold,
The red-brick and handless man
A killer then, a killer now
Our great mercy used against us

I heard of a bloody, burning pillage
That such death shall bring ignominy
By the grave, I saw those sculls
Back into my memories acceding
To save our people, lost and living
For the golden liberty, I entreat thee

Those people owe you much and more
And I as well, in love and loyalty,
That such terror and fear and hate and death,
Back into my memories receding
I stand with you, with freedom true
And fight to see it realised, too.

Yours sincerely,

Upon the day of our Lord GOD,

16th SUN’S SMILE 1715

Joseph I, Holy Orenian Emperor”

”One would figure war would make leaders abandon the arts – what calm and certainty one must feel, to have found both time and inspiration to write this to a vassal.” Said Brube, quite impressed, “Perhaps a golden age of literature is upon us?”
