Scott Mudd, circa 1717. (No Orenians were harmed in the taking of this screenshot)

Long have the Orenians, with ranks plagued of Fennic soldiers and Reiver bandits attempted to control the roads and land which rightfully belong to the Imperium Renatum. And many a time, they have fallen with futile hopes and dreams fleeting from their corpses.

Today was no different.

The Renatian patrol - lead by Philip Vimmark - valiantly scoured the roads to rid them of these plagues upon what used to be unified lands. Having happened upon the bandit, they took up arms with due haste. A short scuffle ensured, and a horse’s life was attempted on, but the man was no match for the outnumbering patrol. Soon bound and rendered unconscious, the men trudged back with the captive.

Upon their return to Helena, a pyre was erected, and the man awoken and placed upon the makeshift dais. The preaching of Sigismund echoed out the square,

”With the Holy Flame comes light, and wherever light may spread, the darkness follows. Inevitability is what drives man. The inevitability of death, ever looming over each soul. When Exalted Owyn beseeched GOD for his blessings against the kinslayer Harren, he was answered with fire. Purifying flame! Let the fire of Owyn sear the flesh from this traitor’s bones, and deliver him into the agony of the next life, to suffer in penance for his ill deeds.”

Jeers calling for the burning of the bandit soon erupted from those who had gathered. A man of reptilian descent soon cast flame unto the platform, and so the man did burn.

”Let this be - eh, fuckit, Not worth it.”

Lily would turn her head away, unwilling to watch the proceeding. Old memories, like a dagger stabbing at a deep rooted nerve, came rushing back. Memories of her family’s deaths and her own torment to flames preventing her from watching another die to it.

And yet. A slight smile. Knowing that they were finally receiving punishment that was long deserved. Or was it a smile? She felt conflicted yet remained silent.
