Howdy!

As aforementioned in past lore announcements the ST has been working on a ‘rewrite’ of the Void and its player interaction, namely the core pieces like Voidal weakness, casting implements, concentration, etc while also focusing on enriching and adding depth to first-time Void connection, teaching and learning, practice, and general out-of-combat Void magic use. This takes the form - for the most part - of reagents and bonds.

Reagents are physical materials that can be used for minor and usually temporary non-combative or minimally combative effects. Reagents can be relevant to all of Void magic, certain archetypes (‘evocation’), or certain magics (‘sensory illusion’). They exist within heaths, areas of Voidal corruption not elaborated on much in this post, and usually take the form of naturally occurring objects as seen in the reagent examples below.

Bonds are long term and sometimes permanent effects between a teacher and student. These relationships provide minor yet flavorful abilities or qualities that aid in the teaching, learning, and/or practice of magic and aim to lie outside combat. Bonds can be relevant to all of Void magic, certain archetypes (‘evocation’), or certain magics (‘sensory illusion’). They are created when a teacher has their student connect for the first time in their first lesson for their given magic of which examples are provided below.

While some Story members have created their own bond/reagent ideas, we also will be holding a contest so we can receive player submissions. This contest will be two-fold, one part based on usability of the submission with the second part being best overall submissions. Everyone will have a chance at winning the first part, so long as their submission is viable and meets the criteria. Those that turn in submissions that pass (or are tweaked and passed) will receive a small prize (choice between minas or an item reward). The overall best submission part will be our top 5 picks for the reagents/bonds (it may split into two separate categories depending on how many entries we receive), and the prizes will vary dependent on the rank.

Higher quality submissions may also be used as a reference if you are looking to join Story, and those that prove themselves here will be given priority in the interview process.

Example reagents:

Spoiler

General - Sparkers
An uncommon find, sparkers are the split twigs of tree limbs struck by mana-charged lightning usually unleashed in storms over heaths. The stick is singed and cracked with fierce blue-white veins peeking out from the bark’s wounds. Should a sparker’s pointed end poke a Void mage’s skin it will deliver a minor electric shock and rile their mana pool, enabling them to cast a little more recklessly with a touch of added power. Sparkers are the favorite crutch of aspiring mages whose mana pools are diminutive and their lessons leave them utterly spent.

-If poked with, sparkers grant a mage a slightly increased manapool equating to an additional tier to use outside of combat (up to tier 5).
-One time use, the glow leaves the twig after use, cannot increase a manapool beyond a mage’s tier 5, doesn’t stack, lasts 1 narrative hour or about 30 IRL minutes until consumed by 1 spell casting.

Alteration - Sun Sap
Thick and bittersweet, this common and faintly luminescent golden syrup is nourishing for both the body and soul for besides its ache soothing properties it bolsters alteration to further bend reality by enabling the creation of independent ethereal lamps. These small suns need not be maintained like magelight and may roam or be affixed as the alterationist chooses. Sun sap can be found bleeding from the bark of altered trees at heaths and ingested with ease.

-If ingested sun sap allows alterationists to cast an improved magelight which does not require any focus and has no range limit, functioning like a torch.
-One time use, doesn’t stack, a mouthful is a dose, lasts for 1 narrative day or 2 IRL hours.
-Lights are blue or yellow tinted white, can only have 3 lights at a single time, move at the speed of butterflies if not following their summoner, no brighter than a torch.

Mental Magic - Oviral
A common, completely purple stalk that sprouts alien red and yellow leaves year round, oviral grows along sources of arcane energies such as mana obelisks or heaths and blooms flesh-like flowers during the fall and winter months.  The flowers, when alive, actively siphon mana from the nearest source be it a mage’s hand or whatever structure near where they’ve rooted.  Oviral is valued for its petals which can be cured via salt into a jerky-like state then boiled into a psychoactive tea.  When the tea is imbibed a person will find themselves whisked away on a hallucinogenic trip where their mind traverses the nightmarish expanses of the Void. The value in such a thing is the meditative trance it places the imbiber in and its acute ability to help novice Voidal mages visualize the sublimity of the Void.

-When salted and boiled into a tea its drinker is placed in a temporary psychoactive trip through the Void’s expanse. It is often integral to the self-teaching of Void magic or learning mental magic.
-Even for mastered mages oviral tea is often used for self-reflective trips during decision-making.

-The flowers are only obtained during the fall and winter months, which must be salt-dried and boiled into a tea.  Direct consumption of the petals can cause unpredictable effects such as warping the mind for several days.

Example bonds:

Spoiler

Evocation - Resilience
This active bond is triggered when a student and teacher engage in a lesson or train together where they magically ‘pull their punches’ and their evocations are far less impactful and destructive on one another, allowing for careful analyzation and relatively safe demonstration.

-When both student and teacher intend, their evocations deal only a quarter of their usual damage. This turns fireballs into brief flashes of uncomfortable heat and arcanic missiles into light punches.
-This applies to what the individual is wearing and holding. Fire evocation may singe clothing but won’t burn it away, etc.

-This damage resistance only affects the student and teacher and no one else and only for as long as they are in a lesson/training setting. If either has ill will and doesn’t intend to ‘pull their punches’ then Resilience is negated.

Sensory Illusion - Bauble
This active bond is triggered when a student and a teacher are nearby. An illusionary object of the student and teacher choosing will appear on their person if any, the appearance of which may be freely changed to an extent.

-A user who has this illusionary object in their possession may attempt to store the object away within a coat, a satchel, a bag, or any other sort of container.
-The illusionary object’s appearance may be freely morphed bar the restrictions below. It does not require concentration to maintain.
-The illusionary object will look like, feel like, and smell like the real object it has taken the appearance of until the illusion has been rendered null.

-Bauble only triggers when the student and teacher are within 10 blocks of each other and the illusion cannot travel farther than 10 blocks from its ‘host’. The illusion can be no larger than 12 inches x 12 inches x 12 inches in length, width, and height.
-The illusion breaks if either the student or the teacher reveal that the illusion is an illusion however the illusion of sight still remains present.
-The illusion can be turned into an armament of some sort (a dagger) however the illusion breaks upon contact with someone else i.e. a stab.

Follow the following format for submissions:

Magic - Name
Full description
-Mechanics
-Red lines

If a reagent, elaborate in the description on the reagent’s rarity (common being easily accessible, uncommon requiring some insight to its finding, rare being accessible only through events or intentional release), where or how it might be found (or made; most reagents are previously naturally occurring things that have become tainted/influenced by the Void in a heath like a flower, rock, bug, etc), what it looks like, and what it’s used for.

If a bond, elaborate in the description if it is an active or passive bond (if something triggers it or if it is always in effect) and what it does.

The first few heaths introduced to the map will focus on the illusion archetype, water + earth evocation and conjuration, and fire + earth + air evocation, therefore submissions for those magics are what we’re looking for most but all types are welcome. If needed here is a list of all Void magics:

Spoiler

Evocation:
 -Fire
 -Water
 -Earth
 -Air
-Arcanism
-Conjuration

Alteration:
 -Transfiguration
 -Shifting
 -Translocation
 -Telekinesis

Illusion:
 -Sensory Illusion
 -Mental Magic

Lastly, if you have any ideas for how a first-time Void connection for a magic ought to be initiated please add your thoughts at the end of your submission e.g. how fire evocation (sacrificial fire rite, burn something of personal importance) or transfiguration (cook meat or burn something to ash or melt ice) should be first learned (the more broad / more options the better).

Are those regeants official or aim to be official? Because you can't and never have been able to break an illusion just because you were told by the illusionist that it's an illusion.

Here are some dumb ideas I thought of. Apologies for the unoriginal names. Hope at least one of them helps.

Reagents

Spoiler

General – Revitalent
A fine powder, often producing a light violet glow, made and crushed from stones corrupted by a voidal disruption. Also known as Arcstone, it is often found in places such as a voidal tear or hollow. When inhaled or ingested, it has the power to revitalize a fallen mage by granting them a bit more mana to their pools and therefore gift them some strength back – enough so to bring themselves back to consciousness.
- Revitalent is able to resuscitate an exhausted mage, assuming they have collapsed from overexerting themselves. It is often used by teachers in order to revive their students should they have exhausted themselves from casting a simple spell.

- All that is needed to make Revitalent is made from Arcstone, stone effected by either a Voidal Tear or Hollow and crush it into a fine powder with a violet glow.

- Even after being revived, the mage will still feel quite weak, lightheaded, and drained only being gifted enough strength to return to consciousness.

- Cannot be used to revive a mage who has fallen from casting a T3 spell or higher, only T2 and below.

- If the mage has overexerted themselves to the point of death, then Revitalent is not effective. It is only able to work on unconscious low-tiered mages.

- Cannot be used in combat scenarios or more than once per OOC day.

Bonds

Spoiler

General – Paired Aesthetic

An active bond lasting so long as a teacher and student are both willing. Essentially, it is a small change in a mage’s physical appearance. While not a particularly useful for any combat circumstance, it signifies the bond between the student and their teacher, as well as their connection to the Void.
- So long as both the student and teacher are willing, either of them or just the student can chose to permanently mutate one part of their body, whether that be a simple streak of hair or simply their eye color.

- The mutation would be the same for both the student and the mage. If one has a white streak of hair, so does the other.

- The mutation can have no combat or practical use, simply aesthetic. For example, one could change the natural color of their nails, though not make their nails harder, stronger, or sharper.

- Mutation can only change small things, such as eye color or a single streak of hair. General hair color, entire body parts, facial appearance, or skin color may not be changed by mutation.

Bond:

General – Aura Blending

This active bond is triggered whenever the student and teacher would normally display their magic “tell.” The aura color of both would seem to slowly change over time, becoming more noticeable as the bond strengthens. If one paid close enough attention; the color change, in reality, would be seen to be a mixture of both mage’s standard aura color.

- With consent from both parties, the aura color of teacher and student would slowly combine. (For example, with a teacher who has a yellow aura, and a student with a red aura; both of their aura colors would eventually become orange.)

- This bond is only for aesthetic purposes, similar to aura lore.

- The aura’s gradual change does not indicate a change in personality, or insanity.

Some spells should be reagent based and we need a better casting system than having your character stare at someone for 5 emotes before something happens.
