THE BLUESTOCKINGS

Or, THE ORENIAN SOCIETY FOR FEMININE SCHOLARS

The Holy Orenian Empire under the rule of Peter III, then jointly that of his daughter Anne I and Joseph II has fostered a myriad of accomplished individuals endowed with tremendous artistic talents; notably, among them are the renowned names of Dame Yuliya Styrne, Princess Elizabeth of Helena, and Anthropologist Celestine Herbert, President of the Northern Geographical Society (which, in itself, has bolstered a number of  female scholars of good repute).

In this era of literary merit and free expression, few pursuits in life are more liberating than that of the arts. The field of creative expression, unlike so many others, has often been an escape for many women, both of high and common standing, to flourish in their respective talents. The Bluestockings Society thus establishes its foundation off of a society of Orenian ladies in pursuit of knowledge, fine arts, and sciences; commending historical references as the backbone such as the renowned writers Princess Lorina Carrion (1463-1527), Duchess Maria Barbanov (1703-1738), and Lorin Blackmont (1382-1420), or painters Empress Helen Horen (1667-1707) and Princess Diane Tiber (1711-1767). The Bluestockings Society touts two key values over all else: the pursuit of knowledge, primarily the arts; and the proliferation of creative expression and feminine scholars amongst the Holy Orenian Empire.

M E M B E R S H I P

Members, or “Bluestockings”, are a large variation of women in scholarly fields including that of, but not limited to:  painters, poets, ballet choreographers, playwrights, actresses, ballerinas, historians, musicians, anthropologists, scientists, and writers. The Bluestockings also highly support and commend educators and those taking the path to assist others in their academic endeavors. All members must be initiated after receiving a formal invitation to join the society which must be voted upon and acquire a majority vote of the current pool of society members.

Bluestockings will be recommended to attend the meetings and activities as listed below, yet still at their own behest of participation. Once initiated, a candidate shall be considered a Bluestocking and receive official garb of the society, as well as hold equal standing to every fellow member after their acceptance into the society.

To become a Bluestocking, women must pen a letter of interest to Lady Milena Carrion, who shall pass on the letter to the other members during the following session of chapter. The letter shall be read aloud and voted upon by all members, in which the member will be interviewed or may receive an immediate formal invitation to join the society if they receive majority vote from the chapter meeting.

A C T I V I T I E S

Meetings, otherwise known as chapters, shall be held every two years to discuss the ongoings of members, artistic ongoings throughout the empire, potential new members, and other occurrences of recent scholarly or cultivated documentation of note; yet may be at the turn of each year depending on the circumstance and will of the ladies. Attendance is highly encouraged but not required.

Other activities shall include the attendance and support of other members exterior events to the society so long as they are in appraisal of the arts and sciences, whether it be a play, festivity, or other performance.

Bluestockings, exterior to chapter, may host meetings in various locations (preference given to the Augustine Palace and its gardens), or other events such as tea parties, writing sessions, painting analyses, lessons by members, and book discussions.

L E A D E R S H I P

The Bluestockings Society is a collective of women equal to each other, for no one member is considered higher than the other– thus, there is no direct ‘leader’ for the chapter. In lieu of official leadership, there are founders of the Bluestockings Society who help manage and direct the functions of the society. However, all members hold an equal vote as to the direction and activities of the Bluestockings Society.

From her desk in Montfort House, the Princess Charlotte Augusta would read of this new academic society with great enthusiasm. She sent her maid, Suzette, to fetch fresh copies of the items listed in the provided compendium, so that they might find a place of pride upon her own study shelves. The Novellen hoped that perhaps her own discoveries made in the desert alongside her cousin Anthony might result in an essay worthy enough to submit alongside her own application.

The first Governess of the Augustine looked upon the missive that was written- looking upon the name of Milena she smiled firmly. "Ah- the newest Majordomo lacked to invite me to this fancy ladies society. Never mind it. They are young so they probably just forgot about me- send the women my wish anyway" she'd note to her secretary before returning to her paperwork.

Sir Edward Galbraith would nod several times in agreement as he read the constituent document of the society "There are a lot of talented ladies in our country so this is a wonderful initiative, indeed! Hurrah for the Orenian women!"

"I support women. A lot. I'm probably the biggest supporter of women that exists. Possibly in Oren, possibly in the entire world. People always come up to me and ask me how I'm so great at supporting women. It's almost a miracle, they tell me, having an Archchancellor that supports women as much as me. Twenty, even just ten, years ago you didn't see this support for women. My administration changed this. When I became Archchancellor I began looking for talented women all over the Empire. I went to all these women's groups asking for good names to fill my cabinet and they brought us these binders, binders full of women. It's really outstanding," Franz says to a stunned reporter, talking in great length while using accompanying hand gestures to drive home his point.

"Uh... sir... the question was about why you threw an inkpot at one of your staffers."

A courier imparts the missive to the eldest scion of Kaphro, avidity blossoming from her verdant eyes. She clutched such with a new sense of inspiration — recalling a Savoy's words in a quiet, pleasant midday. Victoria promptly retrieved a parchment and quill, penning a letter of interest to Lady Milena Carrion.
