What Are Dream Catchers?

Dream Catchers are one of the more fascinating pieces of culture littered throughout human history. First being created by Farfolk in Axios. The traditional dream catcher was intended to protect the sleeping individual from negative dreams while letting positive dreams through. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them.

Farfolk believed that the night air is filled with dreams both good and bad. The dream catcher when hung over or near your bed swinging freely in the air, catches the dreams as they flow by. The good dreams know how to pass through the dream catcher, slipping through the outer holes and slide down the soft feathers so gently that many times the sleeper does not know that he/she is dreaming. The bad dreams not knowing the way get tangled in the dream catcher and perish with the first light of the new day.

What Are Dreams?

Dreams, remembered, are an experience all on their own. They may bring on the sense of images, sounds, smells, and many other sensations. During sleep, the mind may often bring reality into your dreams. Dreams bring on emotions that can be light or strong, upsetting, or exciting. Some dreams we never want to end and some dreams we are just wishing we could wake up, “It was only a dream”.

Dream Catcher Ceremony

There are many ways to celebrate a dream catcher. It is suggested that you initiate your dream catcher through a ceremony. Ceremonies have great meaning and can put your mind and thoughts into action. Your dream catcher can become one with your feelings and perform the way you want it to.

Once you have decided where to hang your dream catcher, it is time to perform the ceremony that will enable it to work properly in your home or living space.

It is suggested that for the ceremony herbs of your choosing are lit and its smoke is used to cleanse the house. With the herbs letting out their smoke, offer up a prayer for your dream catcher and what you wish for it to bless your home. Become one with the dream catcher and allow yourself to visualize what the dream catcher is there to protect. End your ceremony by thanking your dream catcher and feel it ready to bless your home.

How to Create a Dream Catcher

Ⅰ. Using 2 – 6 ft. of soaked vines or bark, carefully bend the vine around to form a circle with a 3 – 8 in. diameter.

Ⅱ. Twist another piece around the circle you have made to strengthen the vine hoop.

Ⅲ. Use 4-16 ft. of strong but thin string. Knot a loop in one end from which you will hang your dream catcher when it is done.

Ⅳ. Tie the string to one end of the Dream Catcher, then wrap the string around the vine or bark circle to cover it up. Once finished, tie it again.

Ⅴ. Weaving the Dream Catcher is the hardest part. Cut 2 yards of string. Start by tying a knot at the top of the hoop. Tie a double or triple knot to ensure that the string is secure

Ⅵ. Working clockwise, stretch the string to a spot about 2 inches over on the hoop. Loop the string around the hoop and back over itself to create a hitch. Make sure to pull the string tight to secure it before moving on  to the next loop.

Ⅶ. Loop the string around the entire frame until you reach the top of the hoop where you started. As you do this, go slowly to make sure the loops are evenly spaced.

Ⅷ. Then repeat these steps between each layer after.

Ⅸ. Once the circle is small, tie a knot around the next string instead of hitching it. Tie a double or triple knot to make sure the string is secure and will not come undone.

Ⅹ. Then attach a loop at the top of the Dream Catcher that it can hang from.

Ⅺ. Decorate it! Add hanging feathers, beads, ribbons, and shells.

Benefits of a Dream Catcher

The benefits are elegantly simple, as the Dream Catcher does its job quietly. As you sleep it will catch all of the negative dreams and prevent them from effects you in your sleep. It will also allow you to have positive dreams that will help you grow as a person.

Of course, they mean more than that, being a beacon of good energy within a house. They neutralize bad energy altogether. Creating a positive space.

"Dream Catchers were made by pagan Dark Elves called Warhawkes!" exclaims Pretty Princess Helen in horror upon discovering the brochure, shoving it in front of her best friend, Governess Anna Henrietta. "This is cultural appropriation!"

..She readies her purse to buy one anyways, though, knowing how very trendy it shall soon be.
