Description

An oily, mustard-yellow substance with an immensely pungent odor reminiscent of onions and alcohol.  It coats the throat and leaves an unpleasant aftertaste upon consumption, not to mention giving whoever has the misfortune of drinking it bad breath; however, that should be the least of their concerns with the mind-dulling effects this nefarious brew brings.  Potent, yet small in measure; a full dose being approximately a mouthful.

Recipe

Base: Aqua vitae

  • Dollop of lard
  • An onion’s skin
  • Blindness x3
  • Impediment x2
  • Lethargy x3
  • Silence x2

Effects - The average, healthy victim

When consumed in full, a healthy individual would find themselves growing disorientated with their surroundings over the span of three narrative minutes.  A queasy feeling is felt in the stomach, a dullness enters your mind, and the world turns and spins around you; the consumer’s vision is blurred and noises become distant to them.  Yet, they remain conscious and in control of their body, albeit they may have slower reaction times, less grace to their step, and be generally weakened.

The effects of this potion last for 20 narrative minutes, half as much should the user purge the contents of their stomach before the full effects of the brew hit them.  Once the effects slowly wear off, common side effects are nausea, headaches, or stomach pains that fade away as the narrative day progresses.  In addition, the user would struggle to think clearly as they recover; of course, this would have no further effect on them in combat.

Upon recovery, the healthy individual’s memory would be hazy and recollection of events which occurred in the time-period under the effects of the brew would be uncertain.  They would feel disturbingly confused and second-guess themselves, or be prone to influence of others [i.e. gaslighting].  People they are familiar with may be recognized.

Effects - The unhealthy victim

Examples of what an unhealthy victim is: Recovering from/recently receiving a severe injury; having recently lost a large amount of blood (thus lowering their blood count); is piss-drunk; or is naturally sickly and with weakened vitality.  A player may decide if their otherwise healthy character may fit in this description rather than the first.

When consumed in full, this weakened individual would feel the similar encroaching effects of the brew: disorientation; queasiness; dullness of mind, vision, and hearing.  Yet this would be experienced within two narrative minutes, with the effects rapidly increasing in strength.

The imbiber would fall into a near-unconscious state.  They remain awake, but are hardly present in the head; the user would be unable to stand on their own, let alone sit up right.  Their eyes feel heavy, the head often lulls, reactions are immensely delayed, and speech is slurred.  Effects last 20 narrative minutes, or half as much should the user purge the contents of their stomach before the full effects of the brew hit them.

Faces cannot be immediately recalled, voices cannot be picked out with ease.  The consumer would awaken to think of the incident as a feverish nightmare plagued with vivid visions, yet wonder why it haunts them so much.  The user would still experience the after-effects of the brew; nausea, headache, and/or stomach pain with a clouded mind that lasts for a narrative day [which doesn’t inhibit combat].

Over time and by interacting with familiar items and visiting the location where the incident took place, the user may be able to regain more of their memory to better piece together this mystery.  Their dreams would be plagued with random, out of place visions of the incident over the course of a narrative year; at the end of it, the victim may have a chance in learning more. [Explained in Redlines]

Base Redlines

  • Acuity’s Bane CAN NOT be used for the purpose of romance FTBing.
  • Due to its unpleasant scent and taste, Acuity’s Bane cannot be hidden in foods and drinks.  Diluting it in a beverage inherently cancels out the effects of the brew.
  • For Acuity’s Bane to properly take effect, it must be consumed in full - or else the victim may only experience its residual side-effects of nausea, headache, and/or stomach pain.
  • Acuity’s Bane lasts for 20 narrative minutes.  If the user successfully purges their stomach in the earlier minutes of consuming the potion, the effects last for 10 narrative minutes.
  • Imbibing Acuity’s Bane has the same memory-reducing effects for the previous 30 narrative minutes in roleplay before consumption of the potion, affecting characters in their respective categories [healthy victim/unhealthy victim].
  • The user cannot immediately jump to a conclusion on who drugged them or what occurred, unless proper evidence is acquired.  It is safe to come to the conclusion that they had been drugged.
  • T3

Redlines - The healthy victim

  • When under the effects of the Acuity’s Bane, the user’s vision is blurred; meaning they cannot see clearly 2+ blocks away from them.  Reactions are slowed, and they are slightly weakened; making them more vulnerable in combat.
  • Finer details of surrounding characters and written texts cannot be deciphered while under the effects; nor can the user write comprehensively due to their mind feeling like it’s scrambled.
  • Once the effects of Acuity’s Bane wear off, 3 emotes are required to mention the character’s slow recovery as the residual side effects hit them [nausea, headache, and/or stomach pain].  This is to prevent players from emoting instant recoveries; logically, the mind and body had gone through a great toll - requiring time to officially recuperate.
  • People the user is familiar with are still able to be recognized while retracing their steps, though strangers are more challenging to recall.

Redlines - The unhealthy victim

  • While under the effects of Acuity’s Bane, the user is unable to be effective in combat.
  • Faces and voices cannot be immediately recognized while trying to recollect memories while the user was under the effects of Acuity’s Bane; however, this does not make it impossible to uncover information.
  • Flavorful evidence and memories are easily recoverable through investigation; i.e. interacting with unique objects used during the event Acuity’s Bane was consumed, or visiting the location of the incident.  Examples of flavorful memories are; the time of day, approximate number of individuals present, what the victim had originally been doing prior, the color of the aggressor’s shirt, ect.  The creator of the potion may offer breadcrumbs OOCly.
    • No damning information is to be acquired to be able to recognize and accuse a character involved for seeking out flavorful memories, unless specified otherwise by an ST or the potion’s creator/wielder.
  • The visions/dreams the victim may have over the course of a year after the incident have the same applicable rules as gaining flavorful memories [mentioned immediately above].
  • After a narrative year has passed, the victim may make an /sreq to have an ST member view over them as they roll out of 100.  This is to determine how much information they’re able to piece together about the incident involving Acuity’s Bane being used on them.
    • If 70+ is rolled, the victim may recall the incident as if they were a healthy victim.
    • Anything lower is considered a failure, leaving the victim forever lost on what had happened to them.
    • If 100 is rolled, the victim gets full memory back.

OOC Comment:

I was disappointed to see that Mordu's submission for a memory-wipe potion wasn't accepted, though I entirely understand the reasons for it.  The idea of a potion like this existing on the server seems incredibly useful and beneficial for RP; it gives villainous players a different route to pursue when conducting their mischief.  There can be less fear of metagaming on their end, and less fear of death on the victim's end.  Both sides can have opportunity for character development, alongside having the potential of some interesting investigative RP!  I spoke with Mordu over some of my ideas and interests in trying an edited rewrite for his original idea, he gave me the go-ahead to try out this new approach.  Thank you!
