The Raging Desert

Spoiler

Her form cast a long shadow across the undulating dunes before her as she trudged through the sand with that heavy pack of supplies upon her back. Her features were hidden beneath layers of cloth that protected her from the biting sands caught on the wind and the ever oppressive heat of the sun at their backs, her eyes the only visible feature which concentrated on the path ahead.

Her concentration however was broken by the heavy breathing of the man beside her as she came to a stop atop the nearest dune, surveying the landscape around her.

"Any sign of this GOD forsaken place?" the man took a deep breath, straightening out his back as several audible cracks were heard, time had not been kind to the aging mercenary.

"Afraid not.. the map i uncovered with the Dwarves pointed to this general area and yet.." Sarah gestured to the barren desert around her "Nothing. Perhaps it has long since been buried.. but i wouldn't even know where to begin digging." she exclaimed with a heavy sigh, going to pull down her cloth scarf and drink from her waterskin which was bordering empty. She replaced the stopper and turned to face Darian.

"Any thoughts old man?" she queried

"Old? I'll have you know I'm in my pr-" his voice was cut off as the winds picked up around them, the two suddenly being battered by the raging sands.

The light of the sun had been subdued by a maelstrom of wind and sand that had seemingly appeared out of nowhere in a matter of moments, taking the duo by complete surprise. Sarah had to yell to make her voice be heard, grabbing Darian by the hand and leading them in the direction of one of the desert mountains she had seen earlier.

"Come on! We must find shelter!" her actions would however be in vain and in the commotion of the sandstorm they would be separated, both ending up lost in the desert as the minutes turned into hours and the light of day faded to the dark of night.

After hours of stumbling through the storm in the dark, Sarah would collapse defeated in the sand, unable to fight the storm any longer. She crawled and crawled as far as she could manage and just as she was about to give up, her hand would strike a slab of ancient stone. In those last moments of consciousness, she would bear witness to a looming shadow barely seen through the midst of the storm.

An ancient ruin, half buried in the sands.
