The Veiled Reliquary - Phase II

Descent into the Shadows

Journal Entry for the Archeologist, Sarah Vandar

Year 212 of the Second Age.
17th of Malins Welcome

I find myself filled with a mix of trepidation and excitement. My heart will not be at peace, it flutters with adrenaline at the very thought of all the undiscovered mysteries and dangers that lurk around every corner. As i descend into the depths of this sunless abyss, the light of the world above gives way to the murky shadows below and soon i am guided by nothing more than a Mercenary escort and the flicker of torch light. It has been less than a day since the vanguard parties alongside the Levanter Expedition destroyed the gate guardian and opened the way into the stomach of the world.

My initial hypothesis was wrong, it seems. The surface ruins that we had thought to be the Veiled Reliquary and housing ancient treasures and powerful relics was in fact nothing more than a gateway, a barrier meant to separate the worlds of light and darkness, to keep those of the surface out and those of the world below trapped. We have bid our Kwee companions farewell, they were generous hosts and guides in the restless deserts above, but as we descend into a new realm they dare not follow for fear of what lurks in the shadows.

I do not blame them, the tunnels and caverns of the world below are fraught with danger at every turn, one wrong step could spell your end and while this knowledge does not comfort me i have come too far to give up now. I must see this through to the end.

Minutes turn into hours, the descent into this new world takes some time but soon i begin to see the first signs of change. Torchlight gives way to the ever present glow of strange fungi and bioluminescent flora that i have never seen before, it is an entire ecosystem of its own hidden away from the eyes of the surface. I hear the voices of the vanguard parties ahead, we pass through an ancient gateway built into the stone, the design clearly of Mori'quessir Origin.

Ahead, it appears that a makeshift camp has been established amidst a glowing fungal grove, a mushroom forest of gargantuan proportions. Many parties have already begun to claim spaces for their own, huts and forts that were once abandoned now housing the brave or foolhardy and their ambitions for what lay ahead. Even down here, this place serves as neutral place despite the tensions that i can feel brewing even further between the Order of Steel and the Levanter Expedition. I fear, without the need for the Kwee on the surface that kept these two factions at arms length.. that in the shadows their grudges and differences will soon be laid bare and open conflict shall ensue.

It is a dangerous path we now all walk, as the rear parties begin their descent to join us and the denizens of this sunless place are drawn to our presence, the last thing we need to is be at eachothers throats. I fear however that the prize of the Reliquary, wherever it may be found in this place will only bring out the greed of the Descendants the closer we come to uncovering it. Friends may soon turn into Foe, i only hope that it does not spell the end for these good people.

Despite my trepidations, the first order of business shall be securing this place and turning it into a proper base of operations for our expeditions from here on out. We must now find the true location of the Veiled Reliquary and to do that we are left with no choice but to delve deeper.

'eave 'o for rock and stone

Dhen Ma’al sat his new reptilian-self down and leaned against the outside wooden fortress wall where the honoraries were stationed. He looked out the vast expanse of the dim underrdark. “To live forever is the only way of life I can know. To spend it with countrymen is the way it should be spent. To honor my countrymen is the way it ought to be spent.”
