Ooo, I've got one!

So, I love good villainy rp. As an avid DM, I love coming up with compelling stories and well made bad guys. However, I know how hard it can be to make a bad guy that really feels like a bad guy. After all, anyone can be a sociopath or be relatable in some way, but the way to truly make a villain stand out is to mix and match. I personally like to look to Brandon Sanderson and Robert Jordan's writings when designing mine, but I'm curious:

In all your time, what villain has stood out the most, how did they get to that point, and what made it compelling enough to remember?

Outside of my own characters being villainous, I haven't really encountered many villains per se, the one that comes to mind the most in this aspect, is the red lich; even though I had little-some involvement working with them on my 'ker, being limited to donation of items, and the kidnapping of my 'ker by their ghouls, I would still say it was quite memorable as it's one of the very few kidnappings that I survived and managed to get out of without dying.

If we're talking about my own characters, well, the closest to a "villain" that could come to mind is my 'ker, being the first character I've ever made on LotC, he's quite memorable, even if I cringe a little. As for what drove him down this path, he was a typical 'ker for a while, but he ended up hanging around with the wrong crowd, getting injured in wars and kidnapping, and a bunch of bad stuff that I'm guessing isn't good for one's mind. He wasn't a very smart "villain" either, leaving his hair absolutely everywhere when he stole from people's chests, and wearing his bandana way too much in public. Justice finally caught up with him after he was busted for a failed assassination attempt of Haense royalty, he was extradited from Celia'nor, and was then hung in Haense; now he just vibes as a ghost, watching people, and not really doing much beyond that.
