(Should this Lore Piece be accepted, existing musin will be allowed to change their subrace to Highland Musin)

Origin/Background/Culture
In recent centuries Musin have mingled with descendantkind and as a result of the larger races meddling and the Musin's natural curiosity, farming techniques and fortified dwellings have developed and allowed the once-feeble musin race to shrug their usual place near the bottom of the food chain. While not a separate entity from their smaller kin, Highland musin have begun popping up in musin colonies where supplies are abundant and larger predators have been kept at bay - they are typically larger than the average musin and as such have taken up roles as guards, day laborers, and roving traders. Some smaller Musin occasionally regard their larger kin as 'rat-like', 'clumsy', or ''rude', but this is little more than errant speculation and envy on the part of smaller musin.

Much like their smaller kin, Highland Musin are typically named after their mother's favorite thing, be it food, games, an object, or scent.

 Physical Description

Highland musin look like ordinary musin save for their larger size, most stand eye to eye with halflings with heights ranging between 2'0 and 3'3 - they also weigh as much as their halfling counterparts at sizes between 90-130 lb. As they are pooled from the same stock as regular musin they share their smaller kin's coloration though tend toward earthy tones such as tan, brown, and blonde - and also more frequently appear with spotted or dappled coats.

They benefit from a slightly longer lifespan than their smaller cousins reaching the venerable age of 80, with the maximum ceiling for age being about 85. What Highland Musin gain in strength, durability, and size- they lack in speed. They lose the capability to jump as high as their smaller kin and are slower overall, resulting in a less nimble jump and reduced ability to scurry and dodge. This puts them on par with halflings again with their agility and strength.

General Red lines/Restrictions

  • Highland Musin are physically comparable to halflings, meaning they can only perform feats of strength/endurance/agility on par with that of halflings.
  • Highland Musin do not have their kin's ability to dodge or jump as effectively, though they do retain the Musin's natural bite - their teeth are longer but not more durable and must be regularly gnawed down.
  • Highland Musin are capable of learning any feat or magic that regular musin can, though like their kin they have lesser souls and are as limited as them due to it.
  • Highland Musin cannot FTB, I suggest doing stork RP.

Purpose (OOC)
A lot of Musin roleplayers love the race and the cottage core/whimsical borrower aesthetic and that should also stay,  but a lot of us read Redwall growing up and want to play Matthias/Martin the Warrior-inspired mice, and that's pretty cool. Adding a subrace that's slightly larger seems like a fair compromise so nobody has to miss out.

I like the idea, but the stat change worries me a bit - given it would be pulling us, physicality wise, back toward the ratiki, (which were denied as a player race)

Either way, even if folks do not wish to switch over to this (if accepted) the folks of Babblebrook are more than welcome to keep using "Highland Musin" as a cultural term! We use it already anyway! XD

Nah Ratiki are like 6 feet tall and culturally deranged skaven-like thieves and marauders. These are the same musin mentally, they're just a little bigger - for Redwall shenanigans

Exact same height as halflings, exact same weight as halflings, more settled down and with more farming and stuff like halflings....

This is just a halfling with fur.

It's fine lore but, personally, I feel like if musin are going to be THIS similar to halflings they should go back to living with said halflings. There would no longer be enough cultural and physical differences to justify musin and halflings NOT living together.

Babblebrook is leaning more toward Redwall/Arthurian/Fantasy Mice warrior- culture, the farming mentioned is a greater access to foodstuffs than their predecessors who hadn't met the descendants if you read carefully; Not really a focus on farming. The comparison to halflings is made to help standardize any future combat or physical lore that should be added in say, roll-systems.

The large OOC difference here is that Musin have tended toward adventure more than slice-of-life, and have at times had their size utilized as a limit on being capable of attending events. Musin are thieves, recyclers and knights on occasion-  Halflings are still hobbits.

This lore has been denied.

We discussed this in more depth in VC, but just play golf and wield a small claymore.
