A LETTER TO MY PEOPLE, AND THE FUTURE OF AMADOR

In the midst of his perusal, Anaksandr found a twitch set against his eye. "A broom," the man echoed whilst the strength behind his grasp grew— irritation its cause, perhaps. "She didn't need to include that part, did she? It was no broom ea stood atop Xèniavaros with." Though he relented soon after. His mother's missive became no more than fuel to a firepit and he, warm within their home in the Karoslund, placed a frustrated peck to his daughter's head.

Nerida loves her son and watches him through the cracks of the floorboards.

Helena did not know how to read well yet, but she loved pictures, pointing at them whilst yelling from her father's lap, "Nie head! Lady nie head!"

And then she gawked when he tossed it into the hearth, thoroughly disappointed in the trade of pictures for a peck atop her noggin.

NERIDA,

I found myself rather surprised to have heard news of you after so long, and I must say I was even more surprised by the words you chose to publish. To call your own people cowards and disloyal is laughable, especially considering I have seen you upon no battlefield and my House fell so far beneath your leadership. Beyond such, I have found myself utterly baffled at the words you called your own heir. To say he is intelligent and dull, and in the same breath? When it was not you, but Anaksandr, who was the last Amador to be appointed to Hanseti-Ruska’s Aulic Council? Do not delude yourself to be all-knowing and ever-wise, Nerida. You may think your heir is unready to lead House Amador, but he has only learned from someone who was even less ready to take upon the mantle of Matriarch. Perhaps the only thing you were right about is how undeserving of your titles you are.

Call my Balianese brethren foolish, Nerida, but take note of how we have fought Haense’s war longer than them. Notice how the people of Balian, while our blood is being shed, stand strong in our duties and honor. You would know nothing of such, so I do not expect you to comprehend my words, but your hypocrisy is laughable and utterly embarrassing. I will offer you my last piece of advice, not as your former sister, but as a Matriarch myself: The only good thing you can do for your House as its Matriarch is to abdicate to Anaksandr, who I have seen accomplish far more in a matter of five years than you have in your entire life. If you cannot swallow your pride and do what is best for your family by allowing him to become the Head of House, then you have only proved your utter failure to care for your kin.

DUCHESS OF SUNHOLDT,

I thank you for your response to my letter. I'd firstly like to note that I did not color the Balianese foolish, but instead myself foolish to consider to remain in Haense and fight, but I understand how you may have misunderstood this. I expect some to take offence to my words, as such is inevitable, and it is all simply a reflection of my thought process - so I ask that you forgive me if my words have offended you. I speak in earnest, and vulnerably, and stand beside my people with unwavering dedication.

Frankly, I care little for what you have to say, and your assumptions are unfounded and irrelevant, and what I say towards my son in this letter is something of jest - a light hearted jab at him. My late husband and I produced a great man, I am not blind to this, and I've nothing but pride and reverence for my son, of whom will be great in my place, and who will take my place in the near future.

I hope you may relieve your mind and soul of this hatred you hold for me. I pray for great fortune and prosperity upon your house and kin.

Aurus sighed as he read the missive. "There truly is no winning in war—especially not for the leaders of conquered lands. Whether they chose to surrender in preservation of their people, or chose to stand and fight, they will be criticised equally by those who have no idea the burden they bear."

Not too far from where Anaksandr sat with Helena, did Mikhaila stand with Kristoff in her own grasp. An equal reaction to his own as a scowl set in her visage, although no words escaped her besides a gentle hush towards her daughter at the toddlers childlike examination of the former Lady Haense statue. Then when he moved towards the hearth and disposed of the missive did a quiet chuckle escape her lips, pleased all the same with her husband's actions a gentle peck of her own was planted to their son's head.

Quote

The fall of our kingdom — the theft of our lands and the careless decisions that led to the loss of our honor and brought shame upon our people — has greatly wounded us all. Spiritually, for we are no longer welcome within our lands, where our families lived for hundreds of years, where we have worshipped, and where we nurtured ourselves and our kin. Physically, for many of us who fought in this foolish war were left maimed, crippled, or dead — left to rot in bloodstained grass, where no one brave remained to mourn. It has left us splintered throughout the realm, feeling bitter, disappointed, and disillusioned. We stood still as they mocked us and our culture, pillaged our homes from the capital to Koppány, and severed the very head of our cultural spirit — the Lady Haense.

"Feels bad, doesn’t it?" murmured the Adrian Duke in Exile as he read the first section, placing the letter atop one of many piles, fully aware that the Hanseti now understood the pain they had inflicted upon the Adrians.

"It seems the pen truly is mightier than the sword." Sirius Mareno mocked after reading the exchange of letters amongst the grandstanding Haeseni. He much preferred either those who now worked beside him in pragmatism, or those who put up a real fight, not a battle of blame and emotion.

"Pointless." That elder Knight would speak, reading over the missive with a shake of his head.

"To speak or to hold our tongues, we will be dubbed fools either way by those that believe themselves superior. It is merely the cost ov war." He'd go to pin the missive to a wall within his home, before moving out to continue rebuilding their community.

Reinhard's clawed hand thumbed the edge of the missive. His feathered cheek rested aside into a balled fist. Briefly did his jagged pupils swivel off to his son in the close quaterd to which they had managed to exist in with relative peace. The fireplace bwyond flickered and eerie blue.

"Loyalty ist a myth. People are pigs." Silence settled as his gaze trailed out instead. Below, he folded the parchment neatly. "... Sie does right to do what she cam by ihr own. Ich wish vy well, in this hell."
