“For Love shall never be easy, there must be struggle.”

- Adelaide Emmeline Halcourt, c. 2031

__________________________

O would that I were comely as the dawn,
With golden locks the minstrels muse upon.
Yet he, my lord, doth turn his gaze astray,
To chase sweet smiles that bloom and fleet away.

If only mine eyes bore the hue of earth,
The gentle brown of humble, hallowed worth—
Or were they pale, like Heaven's vault on high,
The very blue which God bestowed the sky.

Perchance then would he cast his glance on me,
And call me “my dearest,” as I long to be.
For though I lack the mannered ways of court,
This heart ne’er once hath faltered in support.

Why must I strive with maidens fair and fleet,
To win a love once laid beneath my feet?
Yet now I see—I am not sole nor known,
But rival to a heart I thought mine own.

Thou givest thy smile where my letters lie sealed,
Unread, unbroken, affections unrevealed.
Is it my folly, then, to hope so far?
To reach for love beneath a distant star?

Perchance I err, and thus deserve thy ire,
Yet still thy coldness strikes with cruel fire.
If I have sinned in speech or jest or thought,
Must every tender dream be brought to naught?

The Seven watch as I in silence pine,
And bear both Heaven’s grief and thine as mine.
Would that thy gaze found rest on none but me

And I, alone, thy heart’s true constancy.
