Origin

The Scasine is a creature of odd variety, which can be found with two names: Scasine Ferox and Scasine Domare, denoting the two separate varieties you may find. They are a recent discovery on the continent of Azuras. These creatures are strictly carnivorous scavengers; however, the Scasine can, and will hunt should the need arise and food be scarce enough. Scasine can be found in many locations, with varying coat thickness and coloring depending on their native area. Scasine Ferox will lodge themselves in caves, while Scasine Domare will dig interconnecting burrows. The most striking fact about Scasine is the skulls they wear over their oddly shaped, slender heads.

Summary

Anatomy & Uses

The general anatomy of a Scasine is almost the same between both species, being stocky, muscular creatures. The Scasine has a small, bird-like head with a pointed snout and a dog-like nose, perfect for sniffing out rotting carcasses from a distance of upwards of a mile. All Scasine have sharp teeth meant to tear flesh from bone. Their necks are long and well-muscled, compensating for this, and connect to the broadest point of their bodies, the chest. Scasine are quadrupedal, walking on four legs, with the front legs being talon-like and sharp, while the back legs are most like the paws of a large cat, similarly clawed but retractable. To balance their bodies due to their long necks, Scasine have thick tails that taper down into a tuft at the end.

The primary characteristic of the Scasine that makes them an interesting creature is what they wear on their heads. Like some form of intimidation, Scasine will take the skulls from carcasses they consume to wear over their small heads.

Scasine come in a variety of pelt colors and may be hunted for their pelts. Scasine Ferox may also be hunted for their talons; sharp things between 3-4 inches that never seem to lose their edge. From the talons, weapons can be crafted; most often, daggers and spearheads. Scasine teeth have also been used as a good luck charm.

Scasine Ferox Specifics

Scasine Ferox, the larger of the two species, is dangerous and volatile should they feel threatened. They will not go out of their way to attack a descendant or another animal, for that matter, but are easily spooked and may lash out as a chance to escape. A grown Ferox ranges between the sizes of an adult wolf and an adult brown bear, with females being larger than the males. Ferox most often reside within caves, and only leave the general location of their cave for scavenging. The lifespan of a Scasine Ferox ranges between 5-7 years.

Scasine Ferox make a deep, guttural noise from their throats when feeling threatened.

Scasine Domare Specifics

Scasine Domare, the smaller of the two species, are friendly, curious creatures compared to their larger kin. The most a Domare could do is nip; yet their jaws are not even capable of crushing bone. A grown Domare is at max 35lbs, but many end up about the size of your average housecat. Female Domares are larger than males. Domares, being pack creatures, dig interconnecting burrows for safety and warmth. In the wild, a Domares’ lifespan can range from 6-8 years, yet in captivity have been known to live upwards of 20.

Scasine Domare make small cat-like chirrups whenever curious.

Pelt Colors & Their Locations

Scasine can be found with four different pelts. These are location-dependent.

Black

Black pelted Scasine can be found in thick, temperate, wooded regions. Black pelted Scasine can be found throughout nearly the entire continent, being the most common of the four. Their pelt is medium length, easily breathable yet just warm enough for slightly colder locations.

Grey

Grey pelted Scasine are found throughout the continent, similar to Black pelted Scasine. Grey pelted Scasine, while found throughout, are somewhat less common. Their grey coat can be easily seen in many biomes, causing them to be the ones most often hunted for sport.

White

White pelted Scasine can be found in snowy, cold locations. That includes the Northern region of the continent, the Tundra, and atop wind-chilled mountains. Their coats are thicker, and white Scasine tend to carry more fat compared to other Scasine to make up for their more barren home.

Tan

Tan pelted Scasine are found in warm, dry climates. This includes the South, deserts, mesas, and nearby beaches. Their coat is shorter and coarser than that of their kin, with breathability for temperature control. The coarseness of their fur blocks most sand from reaching their skin.

Behavioral Dynamics

Scasine Ferox are independent creatures, living on their own for the majority of their years. Ferox are born in litters of 3-5, with the runt of the group often left behind for the survival of the healthiest in mind. Juvenile Ferox stay with their mothers until the end of their 1st year, in which they are then sent off to fend for themselves in the wild. Ferox are generally about halfway grown at this point in their lives, not adults until their 2nd year.

Scasine Domares are pack animals, residing in groups of 10-20. Raising young is a communal effort, with mothers raising one another's young like their own. In rare cases, Domares may come across an abandoned Ferox runt and take them in until they can scavenge for themselves. These runts may grow up to eventually leave the pack, but at times, a grown Ferox may be found among or near a Domere pack, guarding them.

A common trait between the Scasine species is that a male Scasine will attempt to court a female Scasine by gifting her a skull.

Taming

The Scasine Domare, being the small, curious thing that it is, may be domesticated with raw meat. While the sort of meat does not matter, it has been noted that these creatures find raw, bloodied steak to be their favorite delicacy. Being food motivated, these creatures may even learn small tricks akin to dogs should the reward be deemed sufficient. The domesticated nature of a Domare is something between that of a cat or a dog; it can be roleplayed however a player wishes to, depending on the personality of the animal.  Tragically, Domares have a taste for leather. Boots left unattended may find themselves with teeth marks.

Red Lines

- The Scasine Domare cannot be used in CRP. Domare will flee from combat.

- The Scasine Ferox cannot be tamed under any circumstances.

- The Scasine Ferox may be used in Player/DIY Events, and should be roleplayed with the mechanics of a Brown Bear.

- The Scasine Ferox may be dissected for purposes such as conjuration.

- Scasine Ferox Talons are mechanically the same strength as iron.

Purpose

The Scasine Domare is yet another cute, flavorful pet for the SOL RPers (Me). They’re Little Guys.

The Scasine Ferox, on the other hand, I believe could be an interesting Player/DIY Event creature when it comes to hunts and things of a similar nature. It is a flavorful replacement for the monotonous wolf and bear hunts I often see. Being similar to a bear mechanically, I believe the Ferox can be a good creature for newer, interested players to do their own events without it being too far out there or confusing.
