Do you deserve transparency?

On the behalf of users forum banned I have decided to make this very nice, simple and hopefully instigative post calling out Administration (Exempt are Squak/Smol) as well as managers of the moderation team past and present. 

 

The users inferred and aforementioned below are not circumstances requiring victim anonymity, they are bans that do not need censorship nor the redaction of information. Do you know what silence does in the MCRP (YOU KNOW WHAT IT DOES) community? It gives a good incentive for misinformation to spread like wildfire, I firmly believe that you're complicit with silence that only aids in catering to the mob mentality and allowing them to brew and bubble is done so with full intent on ruining the reputation of a player.

 

Do you as a banned player deserve transparency? Do you deserve to know the details behind your ban? Have you ever felt frustrated in the silence, no one enlightening you on what you've done wrong? Have you ever asked for a manager or an admin to clarify something and been left in the dark and hit with a "We don't know, we can't help you." something you can easy roll your shoulders to, a nice reply that implies there was some effort done into investigating your ban but it's just a lie. 

 

YOU KNOW WHY YOU BANNED THEM

 

The year is 2026, many of you have friends still serving CGV bans as long as 4+ years, many of you have friends who have/were been doomed to an 'Admin Appeal' and are kept on this invisible collar and chain with many of them giving up in ever trying to appeal again, this cold shoulder treatment effectively making them leave from the community. (Is that what you wanted an easy exit?) What I find to be the most egregious thing is keeping years long banned players guessing on what they did wrong, you offer them nothing but silence and any amount of communication in terms of a reply is a "Appeal denied, you can appeal again later" the lack of decency when it comes to any amount of courtesy is astounding, you can take a year to answer emails but you can't even answer their questions? You can't even be bothered to put a new appeal date, you can't even surmount any amount of sympathy for people who by all accounts genuinely aren't the harmful. 

 

I ask the good MCRPERS of LOTC who have been banned, who have friends who were and or are currently banned to answer just one question a for and an against, the pros and negatives. Do you deserve transparency?  if you have a good reason against it, I implore users to debate below.

In my honest opinion, people should at the very least be given the reason, vague/ or not, as to why they were banned.

My dear friend @Ben40Khad recieved a 6 month ban without any priors. It took us two months to get an answer due to the mod infighting, Josh and Squak throwing blame upon one another etc. And the answer was merely something along the lines of; 'if you dont know what you did, then you should remain banned.' 

I believe the issues lies in using the sensitivity of a situation as an excuse to avoid the responsibility of sharing information. It only muds the waters. If administration was more clear, there would be less questions and less of the stress on both sides.

You, the user, are not owed any kind of explanations. This is the unfortunate cold truth, without getting into ethics and morality. None of us are entitled to any kind of reasoning or explanation. This is not real life - this is the services of - technically - a company, which we are """"clients"""" of, to an extent, and are owed no explanations to why they cancel their services (ban/kick/remove us), because we do not actively pay to use or have any manner of subscription or legal binding that forces LotC to explain to you why you're unable to access their service.

Now, when you put in morality, the debate takes another shift, a problematic one, where "transparency" is thrown as a blanket term to say Administration and Tythus LTD should tell everyone at all times what is going on. I'm saying this without having read the LotC TOS but with a vague understanding of both it and our community guidelines, and I can confidently say that nowhere does it state that they have to be transparent, nor that they commit themselves to such a notion.

 

Personally, I don't really care. I was raised in Brazil and was born Afghani, and I know very well that transparency is a double edged blade. Should everyone in my country really know why XYZ happens? Yes. Would it probably lead to good things? No. Not really. This makes me sound like some alt right weirdo who believes the masses should stay uninformed; that's not what I mean. What I mean is that, for things to operate smoothly and run along with efficiency, some people will know things and some people will not know things. I, as a member of Event Team, have access to backfacing lore about the Map that you, as a regular player, do not. Why? Because I need to know what's going on to help you find out whats going on via Events. This is, though to a less malignant way, a lack of transparency, yet a necessary one to maintain the orderly operation of things.

 

With all that being said, my conclusion is: No, you don't deserve transparency. LotC players have in the past proven, for good and for bad, that when they get told things, they absolutely blow it out of proportion and twist everything so their friends or the people they dislike either get something or lose something out of the situation. While I'm not the biggest advocate for Administration, I myself only like Squak and Smol, I don't demonize them either (save for a few specific topics). I don't believe they, or the Moderation Management, have any necessity or obligation to tell you why your friend got 6 monthed, specially because some of you think some things aren't slurs when they very clearly - as established by laws across countries worldwide - are, so don't come at me with the 'I don't know why I'm banned...' after saying something or doing something that would evidently lead to a ban.

I believe that transparency insofar as ban policy, procedures, and standards is a must, but otherwise I generally agree with @Navigatorhere. Doesn't mean there aren't bans that I disagree with, but transparency doesn't need to be the blanket standard. Some players have done things that are better not revealing openly for one reason or another.

I understand being ghosted by the admins after ban is frustrating, but I don't think this vague, passive-aggressive post is going to accomplish anything useful.

At the very least a simple "this this and that are why we banned you" even if it's only to the banned play should be required. Unless there is a BIG reason to not tell them it stupid not to and is just a breeding ground for bad faith bans and speculation (not saying bad faith bans do happen, just saying they can and it will be hard to report)
