LTKiinG <3 2 Share Posted March 3, 2012 i would go with desert road b, it looks like it started as a stone road and over the years the desert winds have blown sand onto the path
Jutra 51 Share Posted March 3, 2012 When I mentioned the pumpkins on spikes I was thinking the would be put far apart, Sort of how the first path blocks were from the cloud temple on he new map. You could just walk from one pumpkin to the next one to get to the capital - I also wanted some of them to have signs on them. The signs saying stuff like: * this fool bowed to the Rex * We don`t like strangers in our capital * forgot to bring his invitation when he walked into our capital * This whitewash orc said Hail to another. * This stoopid pinkskin, didn`t think he needed to pay tribute. * This one thought he could talk his way into living with us. * Thought a handshake was better then a headbutt etc. So when the player got to our capital they would have a pretty good idea of how they would be greeted, how they should greet us and what to expect. Acornlad 206 Share Posted March 3, 2012 I like grasslands, but I also think we should implement the corpses idea.
Blawharag 277 Share Posted March 3, 2012 #1 @Decolamb: I do not think we should be using the new blocks for the sake of using the new blocks. Orcs don't have many structures that contain pillars nor do we do much stone carving for that matter. #2 @Jutra: I actually like this idea. It could basically be a learning experience for our laws on your way in. Rather than just have a billboard with our laws like in Krugmar, we could have dead bodies piked up along your way in. If we really wanted to, we could even use NPCs that say emotes as you pass like <This corpse is rotting and decaying atop the spear>. #3 @Ned Lud: If we cannot get a dirt block to remain dirt, mayhaps there is a second option: Get grass (the tall grass that you can destroy for wheat seeds) and make that thick and dense everywhere but the path. This will make the path have that "well worn through travel" feel of looking like the grass was just fattened here through use. It should be fairly easy to tell where the path is if we make the surrounding grass areas dense enough and it will make it feel much more natural while keeping to the theme of Orcs not really bothering making a road. DecoLamb 959 Share Posted March 4, 2012 Meh I thought the carved stone would be an intresting touch, but my real focus is the upside down stairs, theyd be great for rubble like you see on worn out paths that take a lot of beatings If only we could keep the path as dirt.. that honestly fits orcs best; simple and practical
Noahjam325 53 Share Posted March 5, 2012 Gravel might be the best alternative. It's not my favorite model next to grass, but you need to work with what you have.
Ned Lud 1260 Author Share Posted March 7, 2012 Thanks for all the great feedback. I'll get around to the roads soonish, just been burnt out lately.
Neri 3590 Share Posted March 7, 2012 Personally, I don't think the over-use of corpses would be a good thing. Orcs are brutal, yes, but they are practical people, and the stink of decaying corpses is not pleasing to the nose of a Orc at work. I think that the road should fit the Orc's nature - they are practical, hard-working, and a nation that has survived hardship and war for centuries. Base the road upon this. Build it to last, build it durable. Don't use any fancy blocks or gimmicks. Just make it what the Orcs will use it for - a road, but also a testament to the Orc's willpower and honour. Corpses are a good statement, but a well-worn yet enduring road is a much bolder one. It says clearly to travelers and would-be invaders of the lands; "We know what we are doing, we know how to survive here; furthermore we have the strength and will to do so - do you?" That turned out as much more of a motivational speech than I had intended. Oh well!

This. Sounds awesome. Placing these along the path would help introduce new orcs and/or visitors to the laws and customs of Orcish culture. Its always a little difficult to new people to fit in without some experience or reading up on it, so it would help with that, as well as setting the atmosphere for Orcish territory far before you reach the actual capital. You could get dirt block to remain as dirt by putting an outline around them separating them from grass blocks; Maybe brick or stone as an outline, then the worn dirt roads between them? DecoLamb 959 Share Posted March 8, 2012 Maybe gravel with dirt inside? When you have a thin gravel road it twnds to get stomped and stamped down into the dirt, so a ln attractively messy mix would be rather nice I think.
UltraRed 78 Share Posted March 9, 2012 Grass can "jump" across gaps, you'd need a line of gravel 2-3 blocks wide to insulate the dirt sufficiently.
