The Floating Isles

The Idea

So I read the Sky Islands thread by Amfionas and thought that the whole spaceship-island idea didn't really flow with the LotC lore. I plan to make the Floating Isles more like the ones from Avatar and be natural than a man made structure.

I was thinking that there should be land in Asulon which got pushed up from the ground due to a high redstone magnetic field in the area. These lands can be inhabbited by all sorts of races and can introduce new stories to LotC. Here is the story I came up with.

The Lore

Karlio the elf is a respected person throughout the lands of Renatus and Holm, helping them become better nations. While helping build structures in Holm, Karlio did some research. His research was based around redstone and how it can affect some materials. He noticed that if you run a strong redstone current through a path of redstone a magnetic field is created. He first found this out when he felt his iron getting slightly heavier when he was around his redstone equipment.

His next experiment was a lot more complicated. He thought if one path of redstone could affect iron like that maybe he could create a way of amplifying it. He took his redstone and mixed it with some slime balls creating a sticky redstone substance and when hardened becomes like a wire. He wrapped the wire around a few sticks and created ten coils. He then connected the wire to a few redstone torches and then started to throw small pieces of iron ore at the sticks. As Karlio predicted, the iron stuck to the sticks. He called this the Redstone-Magnet.

Karlio's third experiment involved two Redstone-Magnets and a lot of power. This time he didn't wrap the redstone wire around the sticks ten times, but forty times. He held each Redstone-Magnet in either hand and pushed them together. When trying to push the tops of the sticks together, they would never fully touch. There was a reppeling force from the two magnetic fields. Same happend when he tried to push the bottoms of the sticks together. The only time they would touch is when the top and bottom where touching.

Due to Karlio's third experiment he thought that if there was a large deposit of redstone near the surface and it somehow had a current running through it, it could repel other large natural Redstone-Magnets, causing some land to move away from the redstone. This is when Karlio started to look for other scientists who may be able to help him find hidden lands which were pushed away by these giant natural Redstone-Magnets.

Karlio decided to venture back to Renatus in search of his old friend Alzonias for help. On his way Karlio saw patches of the sea which looked darker than the rest. He had to investigate. At first he thought that there was very dense clouds which were blocking out the light but as he looked up at the sky he noticed something inbetween the clouds. It was the land he had been looking for!

With his boat and his map he rushed back to Renatus. He found Alzonias and told him all of the details and they were both so excited but one question remained. How the hell do we get there!?

What we now need

I would like to carry out the rest of the lore ingame where a scientist will find me and show me the plans for a hot air balloon type invention. We would start building this and venture off to the new found land.

I would be very happy if people will leave their thoughts and any suggestions in this thread.

Why I think that this is better that the Sky Islands

  • The Isles will be above sea so they wouldn't spoil any beauty
  • It involves characters that people know and are familiar with
  • Includes a very detailed explaination to how the Isles were made

If there are any questions I will post them on this post to save double posting.

Questions

Blundermore asked:

Native was extremely against the ideas of orcs having zeplins. How are you going to convince him and the other admins to allow both the basic construct of a zeplin (Hot air balloon) plus that of floating islands?

Well maybe a character could come up with a Redstone-Magnet elevator. With a current running through it the elevator will repel against the natural Redstone-Magnet land and fly up into the air. This could be created by making two elevators in game and use [lift up] and [lift down] functions. And to get the admins to allow this is the whole idea of this thread. With my lore and advantages with being above sea, I don't see why it can't be done.

Extra Ideas

Redmagnet University - A university where people from any race can attend and study about the Floating Isles and how they work. Students may also be able to coduct their own research projects as long as they are governed by a proffesor in the university. This can add so many RP opportunities and gives characters a place to go when the person goes on holiday. Also this will benefit the Asulon Improvement Committee by allowing them to say "This invention was researched and made at the Redmagnet University..." and so on.

Thank you for reading.

I think it has some potential. I think a mystical floating island would be a nice place for nations to meet on neutral "ground"

I like it.

I like it as well. I'm glad it would be above water, so as not to ruin any beauty or building space above land.

No,it won't be a spaceship (you will not see millions of Redstone torches flashing and doctor who playing with them) and it will look natural (the reason floating won't be though).

Just to be clear on that :) .

Edit:Also the islands will also probably be above see or somewhere remote. But If they were above see we would probably need an island to make an easy way to transport.

And I am sorry for this I do not see this as a detailed explanation about how they were made. Yes you explain with high detail the way that electromagnetism works but you give little to nome detail about how a floating isle like that was made.If it happened naturally it should have been made from the moment Asulom was formed or when some drastic change happened like an earthquake or something. Also that means that the islands would have to be gigantic in order not to have them moving by the weight or other forces (like 50 people on them).

And yes,I only say it was a complex machine which took him several years to complete, while giving little or no explanation about how this works. The point is that I have made the core of the sphere by a material found in a meteor. It could have all the kinds of effects. This is why I chose that it has antigravity effects. It is like changing the point where gravity leads (center of the earth) to where it is every piece of metor making it much steadier.I know it is somehow lore breaking to have this material, something with completely strange to everyone effects ,but it seemed the only possible way to explain something this peculiar while avoiding all of the previous problems. But if there is more support shown I will describe it better.

About the characters that are involved there will be a huge event with people if it gets implemented. So everyone will be involved in founding them.

And do not make hot air balloons cause war will be totally different (ou should make another thread)

If you solve the above problems, you have my complete support.I gave you the best feedback I could ,and thanks for giving me some.

I don't like floating islands, just my opinion.

Floating islands would be cool-ish, but extremely hard to make IG. And no way of getting up there really. +Why up, when we could have seriously deep underground villages? Like, go 126 blocks up, and have seriously deep mines? I'd prefer that.

It seems like a good idea, As long as nobody takes it over..Like if orcs took it over and made it into a fortress..Not good, It would be almost impossible to take back.

Also, If this is accepted consider making a video using something like airship mod depicting your character and the scientist flying to it.
