Greetings, hopeful murderers, sadists, thieves and bastards!

We on the Villain Application Team often see a lack of direction and purpose in Villain Applications; applicants just don't know what to write. So, I took the liberty of writing a sample application to give you baby criminals an idea of what a Villain Application should look like.

I used my Orc character, Gronkk, as the subject of the application. This was to show that not all villains are evil, or even conventional. Gronkk is an overweight, incompetent, mentally retarded, adorably lovable Orc character who is at the bottom of the food-chain in the War Nation of Strigzgoi. He likes flowers, pork and pats on the head. He does not aspire for money, power or even women. He just wants to love and be loved. Gronkk does not want to be evil; most villains don't.

Notice that the biography is not simply a story of the character, but a detailed timeline of Gronkk's descent into villainy. Also take note that the open-response questions are interpreted heavily by myself to benefit the roleplay scenario that Gronkk would find himself in. Finally, it would be good to notice that Gronkk is "good at almost nothing" and his weaknesses dominate his strengths overwhelmingly.

Now, without further ado, Gronkk's Villain Application. It's a little longer than what we're looking for, but that's due to the amount of evils that Gronkk applied for.

What SPECIFIC evils does your character plan on committing? Please list the number of each Evil you would like to be considered for, and specifically when/why you need them:

1. Gronkk steals to appease Gronkkbelly, a voice in his head that is personified as his own stomach. Most often, Gronkk steals food but should Gronkkbelly demand an axe or a shiny, then Gronkk would oblige if Gronkkbelly was kind to him that day. In addition, he often is confused in situations, such as when an Orc asked him to induct that Orc into the Lur clan, so Gronkk usually makes things up on the spot. While usually harmless, his deception can be inadvertently fatal, or purposefully if Gronkkbelly or Krug wished it so.

2a. Coming to the War Nation as a fat, stupid, whitewash Orc, Gronkk had to prove himself. As a result, he utilizes his punching abilities to impress his kin. Though fat, Gronkk is strong and if he’s placed in a suit of armor he is a large target for enemy archers, so his kin often bring him along in raids and battles. In addition, when he is in a mood swing of anger, it is possible to trigger Gronkk into a violent fit.

2b. Gronkk, being an Orc, is hungry for halfling. However, Gronkkbelly occasionally craves for other flesh, usually Elven if not Halfling. He never craves for Orc flesh, since that’s just disgusting. In battle, Krug sometimes instructs Gronkk to perform brutal acts (torture) to prove to his brothers that he is in fact a true Orc, and that he must do this if he is one day to be Rex.

3. Due to delusion, lethargia and schizophrenia, Gronkk believes that Krug saved him from certain death, and chose him for a higher purpose. He “hears” Krug speaking to him, instructing him on how to act. He has partially dedicated himself to serving Krug, and kills in his name, occasionally sacrficing souls as well. Gronkk’s devotion to Gronkkbelly could also be perceived as worship, constantly striving to please him in the hopes of praise from him.

4. When Gronkk is confused (such as during the Lur recruit incident previously mentioned), Gronkk can be mischevious and works to spread his own confusion to others. He enjoys watching others get mad at each other, often not fully realizing the consequences of his actions. In addition, those who are foolish enough to join the Gronkk clan are to be “apprenticed” by Gronkk in a simple manner, usually joining him to create mischief or venture on Krug/Gronkkbelly’s plights. For Gronkk truly seeks for friendship and acceptance in the end.

5. Gronkk suffers from bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder. His bi-polar causes extreme mood swings, ranging from ecstasy to violent anger to depression. His schizophrenia is manifested in the form of his inability to behave normally in social situations, think logically, and distinguish between real and unreal experiences. The dissociative identity disorder is present in his inner conflict with “Krug” and Gronkkbelly, which overlaps into his schizophrenia as well.

Biography (Between 2-5 paragraphs. No walls of text, please):

Gronkk was born a small, sensitive Orc in Strigzgoi to an archetypical Orcish father and mother; tough, violent and intolerant of the weak. While the other cubs were head-butting each other, beating each other to oblivion and hunting “buub” with the enthusiasm of a wolf cub looking for its first prey, Gronkk was found picking flowers outside the walls, singing nonsense songs in no particular key or pitch and working with Goblin children on projects of innovation. The intellectual pursuits him and his Goblin friends undertook were absolutely fascinating for Gronkk’s small, innocent mind. They would fiddle with wooden mechanisms, drawings of the stars, and drawings of girls, mostly looking for things to discover and invent. Eventually they started to dabble in redstone, and finally living beings.

One goblin boy brought in a piglet to their little science cave, and it was the most adorable thing that Gronkk had ever laid his big, childish eyes upon. Gronkk’s naive and innocent nature caused him to grow infatuated with this little piglet within moments, and he grabbed it from the goblin and began to pet it, smiling warmly as he named it “Spin’r”. The little goblin tilted his head and shot him an odd look of confusion, grabbing the piglet away from Gronkk’s tender and loving grasp as another goblin hit him up the backside of his head with a stick to a chorus of sniveling laughter. Before Gronkk could release the weak utter of despair that had quickly materialized inside him, the gaggle of goblins had strapped down Spin’r and had begun slicing him up systematically; notes were taken of the piglet’s reaction and of his anatomical degradation.

A tide of pure, unfathomable agony and melancholy swept over Gronkk with the cold and unrelenting nature of the sea itself. His right hand instinctively reached out for the rough cavern wall in response to his wavering knees and stumbled out of the room, the confused babble of his friends not even registering in his fragile mental state. After clumsily stumbling his way through the vast expanse of desert, his knees gave out and his head fell into the strangely comforting cradle of his own hands as he sobbed mournfully, the pain and suffering seemingly pouring from his own soul. Gronkk, the very epitome of innocence and sensitivity, had just witnessed the brutal and emotionless torture of the only thing he had ever loved in the world; he felt as if his very being was quickly withering away and falling into an endless void.

His kin, however, were not so sympathetic. Upon witnessing the aftermath of Gronkk’s emotional traumatization and resulting breakdown, the Orcs only saw weakness resonation from this poor child’s outcry for a bosom to rest his head upon. Alas, there was no bosom to come, but instead a cruel backhand to his face and a kick to his rear as he was chased out the War Nation, only being kept alive due to his father’s standing in the Lur clan as a strong hunter and warrior.

Gronkk was abandoned, alone and left for dead in a harsh and unforgiving desert. Unsure of what to do, Gronkk turned his back on the sun and headed east. The cloudless sky and towering sand dunes disorientated him, whilst the intolerable heat, dehydration and starvation beat down upon him much like his father used to. As he swerved towards the south, Gronkk could feel his brain and his sanity deteriorating. Being an incredibly socially dependent animal, Gronkk desperately looked for a companion. The sun was too bright, the cacti not willing to follow him on his perilous path, and no living beings to be found for miles. Weeks had gone by since Gronkk had eaten, and his belly bulged from him being deprived of pork meat (protein malnutrition causing fluid to leak out of blood vessels and bulge the abdomen area). He looked down to his stomach and saw a neutral companion whom would follow him to the ends of the earth and would always listen. Gronkk began speaking to his stomach, letting every feeling and though pour out of him. His belly never ignored him, always providing a word of comfort or helpful counsel. And so, “Gronkkbelly” was born, and the strongest of bonds was formed. Unfortunately, the massive heatstroke, dehydration and malnourishment that had formed this friendship between Gronkk and his belly had also caused his mind to deteriorate, the blade of his intelligence now dulled to that of a measly twig. He was stupid. Very, very stupid.

As Gronkk was sharing a leisurely conversation with Gronkkbelly, his eyelids began to flutter and he fell to his knees, before his face was buried in the scalding sand shortly after. Minutes, hours, perhaps days later, Gronkk awoke to the sound of a rumbling voice resonating through him. As he lifted his burnt face, Gronkk opened his eyelids and peered through the veil of lethargy and insanity to witness a grand figure in the clouds. It was an Orc in the truest form possible. It stood tall, perhaps hundreds of feet high, its muscles curved and rose like the sand dunes that the War Nation was built upon and his tusks gleamed with honor and strength. Again, its voice boomed as he began to speak in a strange tongue, unknown to Gronkk. It was Krug, and he was speaking in the true tongue of the Orcs, but the scrawny little Orc knew not what Krug spoke to him of. Gronkk rose to his feet and felt himself being guided to the voice, when he eventually collapsed again, but this time into a cool, crystal-clear stream. Krug himself had not visited Gronkk, but his mental state had caused him to interpret the sound of a trickling stream as divine intervention.

After spending what seemed like an eternity swimming and drinking in the stream, Gronkk waded over to the bank and dragged himself up onto a bed of green, luscious grass. He ran his hands, his face, his tongue, all over this strange vegetation, it being completely knew to him. His intellectual curiosity was one of the few things that had survived his weeks in the desert; the heat had destroyed most of his mind. Lying on the soft grass, Gronkk looked up at the forest above him, marveling its beauty, and began to ponder on Krug’s guidance. In his eyes, Krug had saved Gronkk, and as such he had been chosen by Krug to fulfill a divine purpose. What this was, he knew not.

Another thing that had survived Gronkk’s perilous journey in the desert was his hunger. Despite escaping the heat and dehydration, Gronkk could feel Gronkkbelly speaking to him, rumbling throughout his body and slowly consuming itself. The Orc rose to his feet and searched for prey. Instead of finding a supple pig for him to devour, he found a stone path, and decided to walk this path. It led him to the trade city of Alras, where Anora Minesmasher greeted him with a warm smile. Gronkk’s nose picked up the scent of warm, tender pork meat in the basket she was carrying, and he quickly smacked it out of her hands and stuck his face in, practically inhaling the meat before scurrying off. Gronkkbelly liked it. Gronkkbelly wanted more, and he asked that Gronkk feed him. Gronkk sought to appease his good friend, begging for food from anybody who happened to pass by. Most did not appreciate the sight of a sickly, stupid Orc and ignored him. Gronkkbelly grew irritated and demanded that he be fed, and guided him to the Pony Plaza, instructing Gronkk to smash through a window and reach for the freshly baked bread lying on the counter. Gronkk obliged, and smiled foolishly as he consumed the bread. As he ate, Gronkkbelly showered him with praises, speaking kindness that none had ever bestowed upon him. He felt truly appreciated.

After a decade, Gronkk had grown to be rather large. Standing at 7 feet and weighing at 440 pounds, Gronkk had eaten a lot to make Gronkkbelly happy, and in turn make himself happy. His life in Alras was good; he had trained with the local military, being fed and taught how to punch with his fists. However, he could not learn to read, write or speak in proper common; he was far too stupid for that. This resulted in him being discharged after a few short months, and he decided to venture to Strigzgoi after so many years. Upon arriving, he met a purple-haired Orc by the name of Urara. By this point, as a result of time and his mental deterioration, Gronkk had all but forgotten nearly all of Orcish culture and their way of life. All that remained in his mind was Krug, which was what drove him to return, for he knew that he could never fulfill the destiny that was placed upon him in Alras. Urara showed him kindness and began to teach him about the culture in Strigzgoi, but that was far too much for him to grasp. Instead she began to teach him to count, but by the time he got to three Blawaharag, Urara’s mate, took the lesson over. He would punch Gronkk the corresponding amount of times per number being taught, and would punch him again if Gronkk was incorrect. Gronkk did not like this, and felt that Blawaharag was mean and cruel, in contrast to the kindness that Urara displayed. Gronkk assumed that the majority of Orcs were like Urara, when in fact it was the opposite. After Gronkk’s beating, Urara went over to him, gave him a kind word, and pat him on the head. Gronkk liked the pat on the head.

Gronkk soon discovered that not all were so kind as Urara in Strigzgoi. Gronkk never actually learnt any of their names, with the exception of Murkash who had inducted him into the Lur clan, but he recognized each of them through their actions directed towards Gronkk. They acted very strange, in his eyes, as they would beat him one minute then rub his belly the next. The Orcs tried to teach him the merits of anger and hate, while discrediting love and softness, and as such Gronkk found himself emotionally confused. At one moment, he would be giving people hugs, the next moment he would be screaming at them and threatening to kill them. This, in combination with his innate sensitivity, emotional trauma and mental deterioration, led Gronkk to adopt such behavior and the development of bi-polar disorder. This leads to Gronkk experiencing extreme mood swings and occasional violent outbursts as a result. On the other hand, he can end up going into massive bouts of love and care, picking large amounts of flowers and trying to mate with women of any race. The rejection usually sends him into a fit of sadness and he can sob for hours.

Gronkk faced difficult times in Strigzgoi. He was fat, unfit and stupid, and was not talented at anything besides punching stuff. As such, he was often labeled a “dumazz” and took frequent beatings from the more masculine of the Orcs, as well as facing abuse in Alras. Though being a friendly Orc who has the potential to love all, he is convinced that these mean and cruel beings are the reason Krug chose Gronkk. As a result, he often finds himself in meetings with Gronkkbelly and Krug (all in his head, of course), discussing how best to make the world a nicer place. Gronkk wants to give the world flowers and hugs, Krug wishes him to become a powerful Orc and make Asulon a land of honor and pride, while Gronkkbelly wants him to kill and eat the cruel. Gronkk is often faced with dilemmas as a result of these personalities within him, and in conjunction with his bipolar disorder he is extremely unpredictable when faced with cruel acts.

Upon learning more of Orcish culture from Urara, he learnt that anybody could be Rex, “even Gronkk”. Krug constantly tells Gronkk that he should become Rex, through any means necessary, and that he can cleanse the world of dishonor and cruelty if he becomes the leader of the strongest race to walk the lands. As such, Gronkk started his own clan, the Gronkk clan, but Gronkkbelly demanded that he be named Wargoth. So, Gronkk works to making his clan the strongest in Strigzgoi, and to eventually instill Gronkkbelly as Rex.

For now, though, Gronkk just wants to eat a big, fat pig.

Question Section - Answer with as much detail as necessary

Why does your character do what he/she does? What are his/her motives?

Gronkk is motivated in his desire to spread love, happiness and joy to every being in Asulon in the hopes of cleansing the cruel of their hatred and anger.

Gronkkbelly pushes Gronkk to satisfty him. He demands food, items and the pleasure of seeing death, for Gronkkbelly is the manifestation of the anger and trauma that he experienced throughout his life.

Krug pushes Gronkk to become a true Orc, and eventually Rex, though in all likelihood this won’t happen because he’s so stupid. Krug sends Gronkk into battle, to fight with honor and courage, and to be brutal and strong in battle.

Gronkk’s bi-polar disorder can throw this out of whack, sending him into unpredictable emotional fits, and he usually has a lack of purpose when this happens.

What moral boundaries does your character adhere to, if any?

The only true boundary that Gronkk adheres to is to never eat Orcish flesh. Gronkk does not wish to harm any living being and wants to be loving, meaning he wouldn’t kill or verbally abuse anybody, essentially. Gronkkbelly is greedy and spiteful, causing Gronkk to steal, kill and even torture for him. Krug is honorable and strong, and urges Gronkk to be a strong warrior and to kill only when necessary, but to kill with strength and ruthlessness. The only boundary that is consistent amongst his three personalities and his mental instability is his affliction to consuming Orcish flesh; it disgusts him on every level.

What are some notable strengths and weaknesses of your character? What might cause him/her to falter? Include things such as temptations, addictions, physical handicaps, etc.

Strengths:

  • Bulky and somewhat tall for an orc. (7’0”, 440lbs or 200kg)
  • Strong in his fists, being able to punch quite hard.
  • Does not notice pain, due to the mental damage he experienced in the desert.
  • Quite lovable.

Weaknesses:

  • Slow and clumsy.
  • Extremely stupid.
  • Suffers from several mental disorders, and is haunted by the voices within him.
  • Does not notice pain, as this has caused him to be severely harmed before.
  • Good at almost nothing.

What role will your character play in Asulon? What separates them and makes them unique and original among villains?

My character is a diverse and original character. A lovable and pacifist Orc is unique on its own, but his mental illness and desire to be accepted by his peers causes him to fight in Orcish manner, meaning he can serve as an antagonist on a small scale. I normally apply Gronkk to break stale, boring roleplay (when people are talking about the weather), and provide a hint of flavor to roleplay.

Is your character loyal or a backstabber? Does he/she trust others in return?

Gronkk is unpredictable. While mostly loyal to his two “masters” (Gronkkbelly and Krug) he spites them on some level due to the “loudness” in his head and the things he has to do. He suffers great internal conflict as a result, and may defy their will at times.

To those whom are kind to him, he is loyal like a dog. In terms of real people, Gronkk is most loyal to Urara.

Why do you as a player wish to and deserve to play a villain?

I wish to play as a villain because I know I am capable of creating great roleplay for others, and enjoying it on both my side and theirs. I deserve to because I’ve spent long hours as a VAT member reviewing others’ applications.

Open Response - Answer at least four out of five listed. Do not powergame, metagame, or do anything else illegal or unrealistic. Each scenario is designed with no particular objective in mind and is open ended deliberately. Assume your character is in each position, regardless of their normal situations:

A middle aged man, a young wife, and a small male child are walking down the King’s Road together. The women walks with a long staff, and the man appears to have a scabbard at his side.

Gronkk plods happily down King’s Road, his tongue hanging out the lazy (right) side of his mouth, when he sees a family walking towards him. Gronkk increases his speed and opens his pudgy arms, wrapping them around the woman and picking her up, spinning her. “Ug der puurdeh feoomie eur hur,” he says as smells her neck and then licks her face if he likes her scent. The man smacks the back of Gronkk’s head with an open palm, but Gronkk does not notice and begins to stare at a passing butterfly, still holding the woman in his grip. His eyes glaze over and he begins to drool slightly, zoning out and chuckles lightly as he does so. The man, irritated, pulls scabbard and jabs Gronkk in the back, his fleshiness enveloping the blade as it goes in and blood covering it when it goes out. Gronkk drops the woman unknowingly as he turns around, feeling the blade in his back as a poke, and smiles blankly at the man. “Eur hur id uukee ib lat wuumun wun’ mayt’n wid Gronkk, eber’ash duz. Mi wun’ tayk’n her ib latz nub wun’ Gronkk tuu,” he says as he pats the man on his head and lumbers off, clueless to the gaping wound in his back. If nobody mentions it to him, he’ll pass out further down the road and might even die if nobody attends to him.

You hear knocking on your door and go to answer. It turns out to be an angry looking woman with a large human behind her. She is telling you that you owe taxes to the King and must pay within the fortday.

Gronkk awakes from his sleep and opens the door with a wide smile on his face. “Pay up, fatty, your taxes are due,” she says, her voice dripping with venom. Gronkk’s mouth slumps into a frown and reluctantly tells the woman “Bud Gronkk nub hab’n anee shainiez bicuz wen da big’un kaym agh blah’d dat da ting him blah ‘boot waz’n her den mi tayk ag-” he rambles on until interrupted by the woman. “Shut up, tubby. The minas.” Gronkk falls onto his rear and feels his chin beginning to quiver. As he tries to explain, he breaks out into tears, sobbing and wailing with true sorrow over the name calling. He turns onto his belly and stomps his hands and feet on the ground in a tantrum, much like a child, and begins to shout nonsense and gibberish. The two back away from the situation and leave, sensing a large and upset Orc could be dangerous.

After his crying is done, Gronkk gets up and leaves, realizing that he doesn’t live in that house.

Two Guard tries to break up a fight between your acquaintance and two Goblins. Your friend slays one of the Guards as he approaches, causing the other Guard as well as the Goblins to unsheath their arms.

Gronkk feels terribly conflicted as his friend, Murkash, is threatening to fight two goblins over a halfling corpse. Gronkk wants to eat the halfling, but has an affinity for goblins due to his childhood, yet is insulted at the goblins' behavior towards Murkash. When Murkash attacks the guard, Gronkk hears Krug telling him to fight in his honor, to the death. Gronkk turns to the other guard and charges towards him, head lowered like a charging bull, but the guard has little trouble stepping to the side and swiping his blade at Gronkk, causing blood to be drawn from his hip and Gronkk being carried by his momentum into a wall, leaving a crack. Gronkk stumbles around, his eyes rolling in their sockets, when the two goblins charge into him. He takes a step back, but picks them up by the head and smashes them together, then tosses them over the bridge into the river. "Eur hur." Seeing Murkash has disposed of the guard, Murkash picks up the halfling corpse and slings it across Gronkk's wide shoulders. Gronkk yanks off a hand from the corpse and chews on it as they walk down the path back to Strigzgoi.

As you turn the corner into a dimly lit alley, a pair of young female halflings instantly run up to you. They are begging for a donation of either minas or food.

Gronkk is walking down an alley in Alras, looking for anybody to get some food from, but to no avail. As he turns a corner, two little figures dash towards him, and he thinks them as children. "Ug der liddl ash's wub amz lat duuin' widowt latz momo agh p-" Gronkk stops speaking as the scent of halfling wafts up from the two little ones and fills Gronkk's, then Gronkkbelly begins to whisper sinisterly, "Gronkk, I hunger for some snaak. End them. Eat them. Feed me." Gronkk feels the drool running down from out his lower lip and onto his succulent man boobs. "Uukee den," Gronkk whispers under his breath.

He then brings the two close to his body, and wraps an arm around each of them, like he's hugging them. "Id uukee liddl ash's Gronkk will'un gib lat zum fud uukee wi guu fiyun' zum led guu eur hur." he says as he begins to tighten his grip on the two girls, pushing their faces into his fat rolls in an attempt to smother them. However, his grip falters from being overexcited and one of them manages to slip his grip and run off. The sudden movement of that one causes him to let go of the other in confusion, resulting in them both escaping.

"Gronkk amz suurry bud id ju-"

"You are bad tonight Gronkk. Very, very bad Gronkk."

Gronkk frowns and sulks, with his head hung, as he walks off.
