An Elder At Rest

 Share

It had been an overall pleasant, ordinary day for Bili. It began with a nice old walk around town and to a peaceful pond up in the Elder Mountains, which was followed by a picnic that he had with his dear son, Rodney. Once they got home, they had second breakfast, of course, which was followed by checking the wine up by the vineyard. All was well, and the animals in the nearby farm were happy.

Why, Bili even met a few new residents of Lenfarthing that day, it was swell! There were a few rather cute girls about that winked at Bili (because Bili is just marvelous that way), and the sun was bright and merry. Now, as the day grew into afternoon, Bili had lunch with Rodney, and later tea-time. As evening grew, Rodney went out to play, and Bili sat alone in his thoughts.

A deep time of pondering grew in his heart, while he sat smoking in his living room. Bili thought over his life, over the things that he had done in his time in Branborough. He had invented a variety of fireworks, he had befriended the Elders of the town (though Tibb seemed to hate him, and vice versa), he had wedded Roxanne Littleknight, who most Halflings sought after, he had a dear child, Rodney. Bili had the best friend anyone could ask for, Aris Snowbird, Bili had grown a fond friendship with Lyra, Bili had adventured with Gaelag Frondor, and met the curious magician named Ambros! Why, Bili had defeated a great sea creature once in his lifetime, and had survived a battle! Bili had been the founder of the Better Burrow Committee, and finally, Bili became an Elder of the Halfling Race! As Bili thought this, he smiled. So far, it had been a good life.

As Rodney got home, Bili ruffled his son's hair, and they had dinner. Soon after, Bili retired to his bedroom, and blew out the floating candle inside, which had been a gift from Ambros. Bili smiled as he went to sleep, pipe still in hand. Bili did not wake up the next morning. Bili was not very sick, and he did not have much wrong with him, it was just his time to go.

When Bili was discovered at his final resting place in his bed, he still had a smile on his face and a pipe in his hand. After all, Bili had lived a good life.

The sun set, another beautiful day Bolo had in Lenfarthing, the weather was perfect - not too warm, but not too cold out. He sat in his study looking over his map of Lenfarthing with circles and x's on the burrows many times erased and re written. He looked up, the evening sky casting a long shadow through his front door, he resumed his work, the children in bed after the eleventy seventh time. A knock came at the door, Bolo looked up pencil snapping in his fingers from frustration. Carefull he get up massaging his two injured fingers as he creaks open the door whispering a reply

"Who is i'?!"

A sad muffled reply comes from the otherside of the door, the face is Rodney, Bili's own child his face puffy and red with tears. Bolo looks down at the child, a frown spreads across his face, he speaks in a more soothing but quiet tone than before.

"Wha' 'appened li'l Rodney? Is Bili mad a' ya again?"

Rodney looks almost eye to eye with Bolo as he speaks with a nervous sad stutter,

"B-bili's d-dead!"

The child breaks down as Bolo kneels down to sympathize with him patting his back with reassurance his own eyes welling with tears as he begins to think about how he will miss Bili.

"I's alrigh' li'l Rodney. Bili will see ya again, I'll be 'ere with ya."

Posco Bramble stands with the other halflings, in a mixture of both shock and sadness. Although he had not known Bili too much, it was very sad to see such a beloved halfling elder go. A few tears run down Posco's cheek, before he mutters a few words to himself.

"I wish I 'ad known 'im be'er"

After hanging around the crowd for a bit, Posco goes back to his burrow in a very gloomy and pensive state.

Felix stands among the crowd, and stares sadly at the scene. He begins a low dirge-like tune, and turns to walk away from the mourning little folk.

Tears have been shed

Red eyes, wailing voices

Yet Bili lays at peace in bed

After hearing the news of the death of an Elder, Hugo sits on his stone step, staring blankly into the dancing fire. He ponders, thinking about his own life and how death has taken so many people, including friends, family and even foes.

(( If the ghost lore is accepted, you better bring him back and haunt Lenfarthing with Rupert! :L ))

Goddard frowns as he receives the news. "My friend." he thought, "I'm sorry." he says, frowning lightly. He took a few moments to collect his thoughts. His friend, Bili, was now doomed to the void; had he not been so narrow-minded. Had he accepted the true faith. He would ascend to the seven-skies. Goddard exhaled sharply, standing from his office. "I must beg the Creator for mercy." he says, bee-lining it to the cathedral. He stops within the grand halls of his Cathedral,   and within moments he had taken a seat on the front pew, moving into a deep trance of prayer- renouncing the sounds of Salvus which littered from outside.

Gaeleg sits in his bed, weeping, and remember all his adventures with him and then his memories go to that fateful day he first met Bili. Gael doesn't leave his burrow for days after Bili's death, too busy reading his old journals of his adventures with Bili and the others he has met through his life.

"A life without Bili is a life full of darkness, indeed.

Let's go get some ale and try to forget this sad time...."
