Valon (Yokey) 168 Share Posted June 26, 2013 The Order of the Silver Shovel The Order of the Silver Shovel is a guild of vigilantes, formed at the beginning of Anthos. It was formed by one Joey Brownbelt, Grand Shovel of the Order. This Joey Brownbelt would pass this title on from father to son, until it recently reached Johannas Brownbelt, aspiring dancer and jerky-maker. His father recently passed (Pumpkin god bless his soul), before so confiding in Johannas the well kept secret of the guild. The Beginning Joey Brownbelt was a tall halfling, very bright, and had an unnatural love for adventure for a hobbit folk. Now, Joey made his living as a shepard, tending the flocks of his adult life. Joey had developed quite the skill with the shovel, having to fight off “Tha Bad-Nasties.” Joey loved his life, for the most part. You see, deep inside him was a need to explore, to accomplish, to become a hero. Joey often fantasized about becoming a hero. His many books and stories of great warriors and hero's only strengthened this deep-seeded need. Joey became determined to become a hero. He and a few of his friends were digging, a favorite pastime of theirs, when they heard a loud shriek. Joey and his friends rushed to the sound, shovels in hand. Their female-friend, Gina, was being carried off by a human slaver! Joey and his friends charged forward, much to the amusement of the slaver. Alas, their shovels were no use. The slaver plucked them up too, locking them in cages to be sold to whatever sick bastard might show up at the auction. They were fed the leftovers, apple cores, melon rinds, whatever was left over. They often sighed at their shovels, five simple feet away in the drivers seat. They were sold at their first auction. Chained and lost, the four waddled their way to the home of their new owner. As they stepped inside, they were greeted by a kind face, not of which they expected at all. The woman unbound them, and gave them food and water. She explained that she saw them on the stage, and was horrified at the auction for selling “Ya'll cute lil' geys.” She let them go, to the unseen eyes of the slaver who captured them. He saw his chance, and ran to them. They bolted back the the house, where the woman claimed they were running an errand for her. The slaver didn't buy it. Joey and his friends left once more, this time under the cover of night, armed with shovels. About halfway down the beaten dirt road, they turned around to see light, and tall flames licking at the sky. The four sprinted back, to the sight of a black, ashen house. They found no trace, except for the slavers whip. The four rushed back to Lenfarthing, promising never to speak of this again. The Order's Forming Joey and his two friends resumed their place around the table within the crop storage house, their meeting place. They got into a heated argument about the transpired events, griping about how they needed to do something. Precisely what Joey did. He and his friends decided to pick up their shovels, and find their courage, and stop crime with the stroke of a flat gardening tool. They decided on the crophouse as their meeting place. They began traipsing around Lenfarthing in masks and vests, swinging their shovel whenever crime reared it's ugly head. Unfortunately, crime was shovel-retardant. The three had terrible luck, and began hiring other halflings, and human children they thought were halflings. As the Order grew to a size of seven, they began to organize it a bit more. This is where the Order began The Passing As the founder of the Order, Joey held the title “Grand Shovel” He said he would pass it on to his son, Joseph, when the time came. After 5 years of the Order, Joey fell ill. He told his son everything about the Order, and how he was to become Grand Shovel. Joseph couldn't keep the members together, and had to hire new ones. He kept a book on the lore his father told him about the Order. Joseph did everything like his father. He added to the book, writing all the leadership techniques he learned, all the stuff about the Order. He allowed all the races in, so long they were small in stature. Joseph kept the Order alive. He gave commands, and the Order thrived under the leadership and power of Joseph's shovel. Current Joseph waited till his last breath to tell Johannas. He never wanted Johannas to have to spend his entire life on this hellish world. But the time had come, and Joseph had to pass the knowledge. Joseph handed Johannas the book, and gave a breif explanation of his new responsibilities. Joseph died holding the hand of his son, eyeing the book that consumed his life. Johannas stared at the book. Sure enough, all the previous members left, leaving Johannas to employ his own set of heroes.
