Greetings Lord of the Craft!

For a little while now, I've been fighting incompatibility issues with LWC that shouldn't be happening in 1.6 and essentially are breaking it, but I'll fix eventually. Anyways, at some point I felt like brainstorming what might be able to work nicely if Nexus had its own system of locking. Having our own system would give us a lot of freedom regarding what we can do with this concept, so feel free to add your voice. Make sure to read the entire thread!

A sort of guideline, as I'm trying to find some footing here:

If you are in agreement it would be nice to hear your opinion on why this can improve the LotC experience, and what could be done to tweak it for the better.

If you are in disagreement it would be nice to hear as to why LWC's system works better for the LotC environment, or what could improve this idea to meet your needs.

If you are neutral it would be nice to hear how you feel the negatives could be countered, and what might make this idea suitable for yourself. If you think I'm missing something, feel free to add in your point.

Locksmithing

Locks can be a simple concept, craftable with the use of a single iron ingot (or something less costly) you can right-click with them on a door, chest, and etc. to apply them. Locks can be duplicated, and removed from a chest someone with a key.

Keysmithing

A key is automatically created with a lock, and is used to open that lock. You can duplicate the key by use of an anvil. If all keys to a certain lock are lost or destroyed, the lock will pop off the chest.

Key's are held in a keyring pouch which will take up one slot of inventory. Key's can be traded and/or destroyed.

So, why?

The current LWC system relies on an OOC system, and since it is more of a general system we can't expect it to advance roleplay, but it certainly is a nifty and admirable plugin. By making locks and keys tangible in-game items, this could introduce some sort of economy for locking. Currently LWC appears to be nothing more to people but a method of keeping your items in your possession, but there is a lack of roleplay which could be enjoyable to be found in this domain. This way the system becomes less focused on commands and ownership, and possibly more flexible. LWC itself makes little sense at times in roleplay, albeit it could be that it just should be the way it is. It's up to you to decide.

So, do you think we should give this a try?

Agh are we losing another donor perk?

No, locks can only be created and duplicated by people with Iron VIP and above. Keys can be duplicated by those with Gold VIP and above to simulate the way it currently works. Thoughts on this?

Note: Keep in mind that you are won't be restricted by profession if you want to make a lock. You will simply need an anvil.

I like it, didn't Alec originally have this idea?  I think he said something about using trip wire hooks as the keys.

Possibly, but if he did I haven't heard of it from him. Tripwire hooks actually sound like they'd work well. Or arrows, one of the two.

And here I thought I was original. ^-^

I like the idea of having our own locks and keys made by the players, though it could become painstaking. What if a player made a lock, and threw the key into a fire? Will locks be breakable by force, or will we need other locksmiths and lockpickers to come to our aid?

I love the idea of having a castle with a master key that unlocks everything. :)

Okay, I love this idea. But there is one thing that is bugging me: Why is it a VIP perk, an OOC influence, when it is clearly an ICly created item? Why can it not simply be added to the Professions Plugin for a Key/Lock Smithing profession?

Just thought I'd do the quote method. ^-^

As for breakable by force, a GM will be able to remove it for you, or you can seek a proficient lockpicker.

Hmm, personally I'm all for an environment where we are all equal.

Unfortunately, that involves having staff pay for the server to stay running out of their own pockets. Since we are in the inescapable reality of having our server hosted, we must also pay for it, the forum, and TS.

We can remove it as a donor perk, but what will replace it?

Well there is also the OOC influence of the server gets shut down if we don't keep encouraging people to donate :x  So TBH I'd rather keep it as a VIP perk, and even add more benefits to the VIP packages.

On second thought, with the amount of features Nexus is adding, surely there will be other VIP incentive that won't affect roleplay directly. Since if this goes through, locks would be an IC feature, and therefore it is most likely a better approach to keep it that way.

We'll see how it goes, for now I'll strive to see if there is a way that locks will be available to all.
