((This is a real halfling family with an entirely IG history stemming back to 3.0. I figured it would be good to have more history tying back to the great Halflings))
The Shortstraws - A Legacy of Law, Religion and Pancakes
The Shortstraws are a venerable Halfling family with a deep-rooted heritage spanning multiple centuries. They hold conservative values centered on tradition, family, and moral integrity, guided by their unwavering devotion to Knox, the Pumpkin Lord. Known for their strong sense of community, resistance to change, and respect for elders, the Shortstraws prioritize education, wisdom, and responsible leadership, ensuring the preservation of their legacy and societal influence within the Halfling community.
Early History
The Shortstraws began as a family grappling with an identity crisis. Their founder, Gary Shortstraw, lived in the vale of Lenfarthing during a time when the small population had to work together for survival. Gary was a versatile member of the community, serving as a farmer, the town drunk, and an occasional helper to one of the Elder's sons who had a peculiar habit of dressing like a rabbit. Gary eventually found a "Goo' enough 'obbit lass" named Daisy, and together they had three children. Tragically, Daisy passed away after giving birth to their third son, Toto.
Magic
Gary's life took a significant turn when he was appointed deputy of the vale and learned about an abandoned hobbit hole at the top of the mountain protecting the vale in Anthos. Intrigued and eager for adventure, Gary celebrated his new role with ale before embarking on a journey to explore the mysterious hole. Inside, he discovered books on Earth magic left by a great wizard and a member of the Yir'sari. Gary dedicated many years to studying these books, balancing his time between patrolling the village and drinking with his good friend and fellow local drunk, Posco. One night, after a particularly heavy drinking session, Gary stumbled into a hidden door in the hobbit hole, leading to a large underground tower where the wizard once lived. This discovery allowed Gary to deepen his understanding of Earth magic and grow his powers even further.
Legacy of Law
Among the lasting contributions of the Shortstraw family was the implementation of "th' pancakes law," passed by Toto Shortstraw. This law prohibited halflings from using all the wheat to make excessive amounts of pancakes, aiming to encourage better cooking practices. This law remains a celebrated achievement among the Shortstraws to this day.
Notable Shortstraws
Gary Shortstraw is remembered as the founder of the Shortstraw family and the Wir'Sorry, a group of magic and druid halflings who apologize for violence caused by large nations. He is also credited as one of the founding fathers of Shogging, a longstanding halfling tradition, and was a two-time Vale-wide Shogging Champion. Gary served as the sheriff of the vale, leaving a significant legacy.
Toto Shortstraw Sr., Gary's son, followed in his father's footsteps as a deputy and became known for his notable contribution in passing the "th' pancakes law," earning the title of Protector of Pancakes. He upheld the traditions and laws set forth by his father, ensuring the family's legacy continued.
Dondo Shortstraw: Nephew of Toto Shortstraw Jr. and son of Bingo Shortstraw, Dondo served as an Elder in Pendlemere and successfully brought Halflings back to the centralized elder structure the Shortstraws revere so much.
Religious Values
The Shortstraws hold a unique and spiritually conservative view within Halfling society. They believe that Knox, commonly known as "The Pumpkin Lord," is the one true god, transcending all other deities in the Halfling pantheon. According to the Shortstraws, Knox is a magical being who appears before the Halflings in times of need, resembling a man with a pumpkin for a head. Historically, Halflings have revered him for his guidance and protection, unaware that they were venerating a figure intertwined with darker legends of Lord Knox, a deranged murderer.
The Shortstraws believe that the first Halfling was created when Knox carved a pumpkin and blessed it to grow arms and legs. This first Halfling, who bore a pumpkin head, is considered the progenitor of the Halfling race. However, his offspring did not inherit the pumpkin head, symbolizing the transition from their divine origin to mortal existence. According to Shortstraw lore, a second coming of "Knox's Prodigy" will occur in a time of deep need. This prodigy, born to the most virtuous family (Shortstraws, naturally believe it will be them), will unmistakably be identified by having a pumpkin for a head, signifying divine intervention and hope for the Halfling community.
Despite the existence of other Gods such as the Squidlord Arugula and Billy Bob, the Potato Lord, the Shortstraws regard these figures as minor entities created by Knox to serve specific purposes. Arugula, known in myths to appear as a giant squid dragging villages into the ocean, is seen by the Shortstraws as a divine agent of Knox, meant to punish those who stray from proper conduct. Billy Bob, believed by many to be the creator of all, is viewed by the Shortstraws as a subordinate figure, tasked with cultivating the races in the divine garden.
The Shortstraws emphasize that true devotion should be directed solely to Knox. They hold that the other Gods, while significant, do not wield the same authority or power.
In terms of the afterlife, the Shortstraws adhere to the traditional Halfling belief in two ultimate destinations: the Golden Wheatfields and Arugula's Tide. They teach that the faithful who honor Knox will be welcomed into the Golden Wheatfields, a perfect shire surrounded by endless wheatfields where they may live in eternal peace and harmony. Conversely, those who fail to uphold the values and commandments of Knox are condemned to Arugula's Tide, a dark and tumultuous ocean where they will be forever tossed and turned, never finding the stability of the earth again.
For the Shortstraws, family and community are of utmost importance, but these values are deeply intertwined with their religious devotion to Knox. Festivals and cultural practices reflect their belief in friendship, goodwill, and the divine order established by their one true god. This spiritual framework has shaped the Shortstraws' legacy, influencing their actions and reinforcing their identity within Halfling society.
Conservative Societal Values
The Shortstraw family, with its roots extending over multiple centuries, embodies conservative societal values that have been meticulously passed down through generations. These values are deeply intertwined with their religious beliefs and have shaped the family’s identity and traditions, influencing their interactions within the Halfling community and beyond.
Heritage and Tradition
As one of the oldest family lines among the Halflings, the Shortstraws place immense importance on preserving their heritage and traditions. They maintain a strong connection to their ancestry, honoring the achievements and lessons of their forebears. This respect for tradition manifests in their daily lives, cultural practices, and celebrations, ensuring that the legacy of the Shortstraw name endures.
Family and Community
Central to the Shortstraws' conservative values is the emphasis on family and community. They believe that the strength of their society lies in the unity and support of its members. Family bonds are nurtured and prioritized, with elders revered for their wisdom and experience. The Shortstraws foster a close-knit community where mutual aid and cooperation are paramount, reflecting their belief in the collective well-being over individual pursuits.
Moral Integrity
The Shortstraws uphold a strict code of moral integrity, derived from their spiritual devotion to Knox, the Pumpkin Lord. They advocate for honesty, hard work, and humility, expecting each family member to embody these virtues. This moral framework guides their actions and decisions, fostering a reputation for reliability and ethical conduct within the Halfling society.
Resistance to Change
While the world around them evolves, the Shortstraws remain steadfast in their conservative values, often resisting change that threatens their established way of life. They are cautious about adopting new practices or ideologies, preferring to adhere to time-honored traditions. This resistance to change is not rooted in stubbornness but in a deep-seated belief that their ancestral values have sustained them through centuries and will continue to do so.
Education and Wisdom
The Shortstraws place a high value on education and the acquisition of wisdom, particularly in areas related to their heritage and religious beliefs. They encourage the younger generations to learn about their history, the teachings of Knox, and the family’s role within the larger Halfling community. This emphasis on education ensures that each new generation is well-versed in the principles that have guided the Shortstraws for centuries.
Leadership and Responsibility
Being a prominent family, the Shortstraws take on leadership roles within the Halfling community, guided by their conservative values. They view leadership as a responsibility rather than a privilege, committed to serving the community with fairness and justice. Their leadership is characterized by a strong sense of duty, upholding the traditions and laws that have governed their society for generations. It is the dream of Every Shortstraw father to have a son that aspires to be the Mayor or Sheriff.
Social Hierarchy
The Shortstraws acknowledge a social hierarchy that respects experience and age. Elders are given authority and their decisions are trusted, based on the belief that wisdom comes with age. This hierarchy ensures that the family and community are guided by those with the most knowledge and life experience, reinforcing stability and continuity.
Through their unwavering commitment to these conservative values, the Shortstraws have not only preserved their family line but also significantly influenced the societal norms of the Halfling community. Their legacy is a testament to the enduring power of tradition, family, and moral integrity.
Physical Appearance
The Shortstraws, like most Halflings, are small in stature, typically standing around three feet tall. They are known for their round faces, bright eyes, and rosy cheeks. However, a distinctive characteristic of the Shortstraws is their propensity towards obesity, a trait driven by their love of food and ale combined with a naturally slower metabolism. This fuller figure is often seen as a sign of prosperity and contentment within their community. The Shortstraws take pride in their robust appearances, viewing their plumpness as a reflection of their familial bonds and the rich, indulgent lifestyle they cherish. Despite their larger size, they are quick-witted, embodying the jovial and resilient spirit of the Halfling race.
Known living Shortstraws:
- Toto Shortstraw Jr. II (The third Toto Shortstraw and direct descendent of Gary Shortstraw)
Shortstraws of not much note:
- Toto Shortstraw Jr. (Father of Toto Shortstraw Jr. II son of Toto Shortstraw Sr.)
- Lilly Shortstraw (Cousin of Toto Sr.)
-Bingo Shortstraw (Brother of Toto Shortstraw Jr.)
-Gogo Shortstraw ( Someone though combining the G from Gary with the 'o' 'o' of Toto would produce a great halfling. Gogo liked ale, but didn't aspire for much)
