Yeah, it's always annoyed me. There is no trying to rationalize your actions or explain them, that will NEVER work. You literally just have to beg forgiveness, which is silly.
I'm pretty sure you'd need a metric to measure whether groveling actually has any effect; until then people are simply being needlessly sycophantic because it may be seen as the norm.
