  1. Imperial Capital of the Holy Orenian Empire, Adelburg For two decades, the Heartlands stood empty. The vast grassy expanse, eternally frosted with the chilling touch of Thanium from the ruins of Johannesburg, stood empty. The old roads, once bustling with traders and travellers capital-bound, stood empty. The solemn forests, scarred by a battle long forgotten, stood empty. Yet, upon the dawning of the Deep Cold 1622, that emptiness was cast off. Where once only ruins dappled the lonely grasslands, proud walls speared into the sky, with the Imperial banners streaming from the battlements in the coastal wind like black-and-purple flames. In a land that had become a stranger to trade, merchants now flocked to the masses of canvas-stalls that bloomed within the city, and the voices of tradesmen crying their wares became a droning chorus that drowned out even the seagulls. Divided since Oren’s fall, the squabbles of the nobility were forgotten as the Imperial Court left the dreary swamps of Mardon and nestled itself in the heart of the new capital, with a renewed sense of hope, and brights eyes turned to the future. Though a winter’s morning, the dawn of the 15th of the Deep Cold seemed brighter than ever as the gates of the new Imperial capital opened, and pale sunlight streamed through the streets. With the swamps of Mardon forgotten, humanity stood stronger than ever as the heart of Oren beat anew and rekindled in a new home, for all vassals and all sons of Horen. From the docks of Tahn, the walls of the city could be seen, the pale winter light fracturing through the battlements and the bannered watchtowers silhouetted in the morning light, beckoning all wayward eyes and enthralling all faithful hearts. For twenty years, the Heartlands stood empty, but in the Deep Cold of 1622, it stood empty no more. It became the site of a capital once more -- it became the site of Adelburg. After twenty years of bitter silence, the Heartlands became the home of humanity once more. However, if no males of main paternal line of the titleholder’s house exist, succession would fall to the sons of females. If none exist, the title would revert to the liege. Line of Imperial Succession The Line of Imperial Succession is maintained separately by the Imperial Chancery, which can be see here. [To be posted soon]. 7. THE TEN TABLES On Defining the Tables The activity of the Ten Tables is to elucidate our wishes for the dispensation of justice within our realm. At our charge, its precepts are enacted, and in our absence, they shall service the state in contending against iniquity. We thus commit our servants to see to its righteous execution, in accordance with the three principles of law: to live virtuously, to trespass no one, and to give each his due. Thus we adjudge all crime as injury against the well being of one of seven parties, each the subject of an equal number of proceeding Tables: the individual, property, the state, the faith, the public morality, the public order, and the imperial office. Proximately, the ninth table concerns inchoate offenses, and the tenth legal defenses for mitigation of punishment. Of the offenses enumerated herein, with the exception of those intolerable crimes classed as high treason, each is classified according to its degree, of which there exist three, and upon which culpability and just punishment shall be evaluated. The applicable sanction for each crime and degree of injury are recorded within the table the crime is located. These degrees are: The third degree offense, of the least severity. The second degree offense, of middling severity. The first degree offense, of the greatest severity. Of the offenses enumerated herein, each is assigned specific punishment according to its severity, of which that exists four, and which the plaintiff evaluates and chooses the appropriate sentence. The applicable sanction for each crime is recorded within the table the crime is located. The assigned classes of punishments are: Infractions, of least severity, include the appropriated sentences: monetary fine up to two thousand mina, confinement to prison for up to two annum, designated service to state or faith for up to five annum, removal of up to two fingers to the second knuckle, removal of up to two teeth, removal of up to two toes of the same foot, removal of one quarter-inch of the ears if elven, partial removal of a tusk if orcish, removal of the beard if dwarven, removal of one inch of the tail if feline, or branding by hot iron on the chest or buttocks. Customarily, the sentenced is dragged by horse on a wooden skid to the site of their execution. Where the victim of an injury is legally entitled to a trial, he may elect for a trial of civil remedy or criminal indictment. If he elects for a trial of civil remedy, it is the judge's duty to prescribe a financial penalty to allay the damage done. If he chooses a trial of criminal indictment, it is the judge’s duty to prescribe the harshest possible punishment upon the offender. Within each table, the method of selecting a trial’s plaintiff is defined. 8. PANDECTARVM JOHANNES FREDERICVS IMPERATOR The Holy Orenian Empire’s Code of Laws, be they Civil, Criminal or Natural Exordium The Ten Tables Lex Lotharingium Lex Aristocratia Lex Arcania Amendments Lexicon EXORDIUM ON IMPERIAL AUTHORITY The Carolinian Excerpt Upon the Nature of Imperial Authority It is the crown of piety that adorns the Emperor above all other ornaments of kingship. Wealth vanishes; glory perishes, but the gift of God-given government is eternal, and it sets its possessors beyond the reach of oblivion. By the hand of Holy Pontiffs, the Emperor is bestowed a dignity beyond all honors, for it is a dignity bestowed by God. His soul is rendered pure upon ascent and thenceforth reflects the state of his dominions; if sallow be his domain, his spirit languishes in its equal. He weighs the sins of man, and is thus burdened to toil towards a realm kin to the heavens. By the nature of his body, the Emperor is alike to other men--but by his authority, he is above all others, and no man can claim greater jurisdiction. The Imperial Office is that of the Lord’s viceregent in this world, and is wholly unbound by common or temporal law. He is inalienable and indomitable, as he must be so as to govern justly and fairly. In receiving this dignity, the Emperor is compelled to emulate He who granted it, for though all men serve him, he is servant to God. Earthly pomp degrades the majesty of his office, as do wickedness and laxity. To afford wisdom and mercy akin to the Lord’s is the Emperor’s greatest faculty; he is credited greater capacity than any other to work justice. Yet no man is his judge, and God his only confessor. The Emperor is eminent in all things; he is above the sun that retreats before darkness, and the seas which accede to the ravings of the stars. He is greater than the winds which toss without abandon, and the earth that lays indolent still despite calamity. The Emperor is Oren manifest: successor to its prophets and master to the world, the sovereign of all humanity who provides that esteemed folk with just governance. -Prince-Father Charles Polycarp, Metropolitan of Felsen, 1527
  9. THE IMPERIAL ARMY Est. 15th of Snow’s Maiden, 1590. Authored by Ser Rakim of House Yar and revised by his Excellency, the Imperial Archchancellor Ser Leopold of House Horen. The Imperial Army repelling a bandit incursion in the plains of Alstion, west of Johannesburg, 1575 “A ruler’s personal levy is a reflection of their true power. Should said levy remain proud, organized, clean and most importantly, effective, then through reasoning one could infer that their respective liege is the same. A ruler cannot enforce his will without devout men to ensure his ideals are executed without flaw. Furthermore, it stands to reason that a ruler cannot maintain order amongst his vassals unless he carries a large stick to back his demands. Without a strong, personal levy, a lord lacks the means to legitimize his rule.” - Ser Leopold Francis of Marna when addressing the Vandorian martial disaster, Memoirs from a Tower. “Why do I fight?” a Crown Knight of the Imperium Quintus once asked rhetorically to his subordinates. “I fight to serve His Imperial Majesty in valor and faith. We brave men do not lust for war. On the contrary, we abhor bloodshed. We take this burden upon our shoulders for the slight chance that those after us, our children, do not have to partake in this unnatural way of living. But we raise our children right so that should the day come when humanity is threatened, they too will answer His Imperial Majesty’s call. Some say our dream of bringing a brighter future for humanity is foolish. I say it is better to reach out for this dream and fail than to not try at all. This is why I fight. Now, comrades, why do YOU fight?” In the year 1587, His Imperial Majesty Philip I Frederick has seen it fit to reform the Imperial Army to accommodate for the rapid change in the Imperium Quintus. WHY FIGHT? “You will see things that few will be asked to bear witness to, and you will have to face your worst fears. But face them you must, with strength, fortitude, devotion and valor; for it is on these qualities that our country is built. But rest assured, there will be a brother behind you to ensure your faith remains constant.” –Helton Chivay, addressing the soldiers of Kaedrin It is a great honor to serve directly beneath his Imperial Majesty as a member of his personal levy. Not only is serving a civic duty to the Imperium, it remains evident that it is a morally right duty as well. The isles of Axios as we, the MEN of this realm, know it, consists of ethnic degeneracy and banditry. To the Imperium’s north, creatures of thick green skin roam unhindered which hold only an inherent and natural desire to consume human flesh. To our West, we’ve necrotic beings which pollute the very fabric of our society in the form of heresy and abomination. In our great Empire’s capital, we’ve criminals and vagabonds which spit upon his Imperial Majesty’s divine name without any devotion to kin or country. The very mentality of our great Imperium changes rapidly, and thus the Army must adapt. Those who serve the Imperium for Eight Years (Two Saint’s Months), two tours of service, will be granted a personal farmstead as written within the Imperial Retiree Program of 1579 provided the applicant remains a Class A or Class B citizen. Farmsteads provided as a result of the Retiree Program hold the size of four-hundred square meters, with the ability of the recipient to manage the land as they see fit should it adhere to Imperial Construction Regulations. Furthermore, the Army’s individual Circles shall provide their respective soldiers the equipment required to maintain order within the Empire. CHAIN OF COMMAND “I was not delivered into this world into defeat, nor does failure course my veins. I am not a sheep waiting to be prodded by my shepherd. We are the lion, and we refuse to sleep with sheep. For a lion sleeps in the heart of every brave man- we will persist, until we succeed.” - Philip I Frederick when addressing the philosophical implications between strength and conformity. COMMISSIONED OFFICERS General The General is the highest officer in the Imperial Army, bearing the responsibility of organizing and maintaining a mobile, professional force of nature that is swiftly moved onto the battlefield and retained once victorious. The General has the full authority to accomplish his goal, and handles the appointment of lesser officers. It is important to note that in times of war, the General reports directly to the Imperial Field Marshal when engaged in combat. COLONEL The Colonel is essentially the hand of the General, giving direct aid where need be in the Imperial Army. He is usually a competent administrator and tactical overseer, providing the General with an arsenal of options in the application of the Emperor’s will. In addition, it is the responsibility of the Colonel to assign medals and approve promotions. When the General is indisposed or incapacitated, a specified Colonel takes over as the leader of the Imperial Army. KNIGHT COMMANDER The Knight Commander is is a knight whom has shown their worth through unwavering devotion and loyalty to his Imperial Majesty and through their martial capabilities..Superior to all other knights in a designated circle, the selected Knight Commander is authorized to issue commands to the other knights in the absence of a Colonel. A role-model to many, Knight Commanders are to be well trimmed and exemplified soldiers that follow the knightly code to the letter as they remain physical embodiments of Imperial Values. KNIGHT Knights are the commissioned officers of the Imperial Army, and act as supervisors, disciplinarians, and are otherwise tools of execution employed by the Knight Commander. Often, they are considered tent leaders to their subordinates, and are expected to train and reform those who are weak into victory-minded instruments of war. These men are proven veterans and agents of the Empire who have shown the capability to make good decisions and accomplish their goals. RANKS OF FOOT SERGEANT Sergeants are simply veteran soldiers who have earned distinction above medals, and who can be relied upon to perform special tasks under the pay-grade of the Knight. Reserved primarily for those who are not yet knighted nor human, Sergeants hold the authority to distribute justice and maintain the law in the absence of a Knight. MAN-AT-ARMS Men-at-Arms are the backbone infantry unit of the Imperial Army, consisting of the regular foot soldiers. These men are the tools used by their officers to win wars, and are trained in brutality and swift effectiveness. FOOTMAN Footmen are the newest, and often most inexperienced, of the Imperial Army. They are given grunt work and are constantly drilled by their superiors in the proper conduct of soldiers. Rankers will prove themselves to become Men-at-Arms, or they will be removed from Army service. Generally, militiamen and levied troops are recognized as rankers during mixed operations. BILLETS Billets are specialized ranks are jobs given to men of the Imperial Army in each brigade. During peace and war it is their duty to fulfill these roles just as they would fulfill their roles on the battlefield. They are as follows: CHEF Chefs ensure rations are made for each soldier in his brigade before going on scouting missions and prepare at least three meals per day during peacetime. It is their duty to tell the Quartermaster when they are in need of ingredients. They are expected to keep a clean kitchen and may take on an apprentice. COURIER Messengers deliver and receive reports from command to deliver to their brigade. These roles are usually given to Sergeants. Must be literate. REPORT MASTER Deals with roster and general reports for the brigade. Must be literate. QUARTERMASTER The Quartermaster ensures everyone in their brigade is well fitted. They take count of supplies of each brigade and report to command on any supplies needed. Furthermore, a Head Quartermaster is assigned to each cohort, acting as the prime manager of the Armyary armory. DISCIPLINARIAN Role typically given to Sergeants, but no lower than Knights. The Disciplinarian leads training exercises at least once per Saint’s week to ensure the brigade is in shape. The disciplinarian, during training exercises, is given permission to discipline anyone in the brigade save those of officer rank unless directed by an officer superior to the former. DRILLMASTER The Drillmaster is tasked with the training of the Unoathed within their respective company. The role is typically assigned to a Decanus, and they are responsible for ensuring the qualified Unoathed pass their trials and formally take their oath. MEDICAE Those well versed in medicine and the healing arts that ensure the health of the brigade. THE EMPEROR’S ARMY THE EMPEROR'S FIST GENERAL: Ser Leopold Francis Horen (Zhulik) DEPUTY COLONEL: Ser Rakim Yar (Shady_Tales) CIRCLE I WESTERLANDS DEATH’S HEAD COLONEL: Ser Rakim Yar (Shady_Tales) KNIGHT COMMANDER: Ser Philip Augustus (Gucko) The First Circle is made primarily of the men who have been deployed to the fortress of Caer’Kharyll in the Westerlands to defend against the unholy beings of the Sunless Sanctum. As the vanguard of his Imperial Majesty, they are responsible for guarding the western frontier of the Empire against the forces of the Undead and any other force that might find route through the area. They are the first line of defense for the rest of the Humanity in regards to necrotic activity en masse. Men in the First Circle are required to be gritty, experienced individuals who are more than competent in martial skill and able to make split-second decisions. Because of this, they are used as a special task force during wartime, and are not often re-deployed unless absolutely needed. Because of their first duty as border guards and skirmishers, they are known as Death’s Head. The soldiers of the First Circle are elusive in the more populated, urbanized regions of the Empire, such as the Alstion Crownlands, Johannesburg and Lorraine. This enigmatic nature bleeds into their recruitment process, which is more exclusive than other Circles of the Army. A man must prove himself as a warrior and have an extensive history of military service before being considered viable for the dire duties that a Westerland man is burdened with. In addition, the First Circle is the only portion of his Imperial Majesty’s Army which permits the use of criminals to act as fodder against the undead, often referring to prisoners as the Forlorn Hope. The Westerland Circle investigating banditry and necrotic activities within the Westerland wastes upon his Imperial Majesty’s request, 1587 CIRCLE II ALSTION BLACK COMPANY Colonel: Ser Mattington Ironsword (Vetren54) Knight Commander: Ser Walter Marshall (Taketheshot56) The Second Circle is the largest body in the Imperial Army, and is responsible for the garrison of the Imperial heartland, known as Alstion, and especially the capital city of Johannesburg. These professional soldiers are police during the peacetime, using their martial and organizational skills as an effective deterrent to rowdy crowds and the common lawbreaker. During times of war, this Circle is risen to meet the defensive needs of the Empire. While a small garrison is always in the city to provide protection and policing services, most Army in this circle will find themselves on campaign for long amounts of time during war. This Circle often times acts as a support unit to the First Circle in the form of flanks or reinforcements. Because of this, they are known as the Black Company, as they are a standing force that is only deployed at war. This main body of the Imperial Army situated in the Imperial heartland is where many men first enlist, and many military careers begin. Despite this, it is no less important or honourable a role than its other regiments. The Black Company is the proverbial bread and butter of the military might of Oren and the principal guardians of its most prosperous, populated lands. The Alstion garrison rides across the plains of southern Asul before the siege of San’Kharak, 1581 CIRCLE III PALATINI NAUZICA Colonel: Philip Louis of Marna (Tsuyose) Knight Commander: Ser Alexei Nikovich (Throwhands) The Nauzican Brigade is an elite sect of the Imperial Army, consisting of seasoned warriors and hardened veterans who are charged with the duty of standing as His Imperial Majesty’s personal bodyguard detail and escort. Having throughout history shifted in prominence, the Nauzica was disbanded and eventually merged into the Deathshead Brigade, until its eventual resurrection at the behest of Philip I Frederick. This historic regiment, ripe with decrepit culture that now stands as a separate entity to re-emerge as the jewel of the Army, shall stand at the side of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor and ensure he receives the utmost protection. The Nauzica are the sword and shield of the Emperor, forever stalwart and vigilant. Of all the regiments of the Imperial Army, Nauzica is by far the most exclusive, as they serve as the last line of defense between the beating heart of the Empire (The Emperor himself) and all who would attempt to lay him low. As such, only the most elite and trusted soldiers with long histories of Imperial service are granted the privilege of serving within this guard. The Nauzican Calvary Guard mounting a counter-charge upon a Johannesburg incursion in order to defend his Imperial Majesty, the late John III Owyn, 1576 REQUIREMENTS One must be an IMPERIAL CITIZEN with the ability to trace one’s lineage up to two generations. It is common to be knighted as well when receiving this order due to the extreme actions required to be awarded it. ORDER OF MERIT One of the highest honors a man can achieve, the three degrees of the Order of Merit are awarded only to the most stalwart and heroic of Imperial men and women. Through battle or otherwise, the bearers of the Order of Merit have proven themselves to be those the Emperor can rely on the most for their loyalty and unwavering devotion to his vision. MEDAL OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE Containing only a single degree, the Medal of Distinguished Service is awarded most commonly to soldiers having served in the Imperial forces for upwards of fifteen years. The bearers of this title wear the medal proudly on their uniform. ORDER OF BRAVERY For those who show themselves to be truly selfless and willing to charge headlong into the fires, there is the Order of Bravery. Often heroic Knights and courageous soldiers who have shown little regard for their safety when the Empire is on the line. NATIONAL DEFENSE MEDAL The National Defense Medal is awarded for those that have served their entire Tour of Service of eight years. GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL The Good Conduct Medal is awarded to soldiers that have proven to be exemplary models and have received no negative marks on performance. 14. Throughout the many isles of Axios, tattered pieces of parchment lie scattered within taverns, nailed to lamp-posts, plastered to the exterior and interior of many walls. Every sliver of paper appears to be written with the same script, clearly presented by one hand alone. A wax seal is imprinted on the bottom-left corner of each notice. IMPERIAL BOUNTY BOARD Penned by Lord Philip Augustus de Capua, Imperial Huntsman and Lady Eleanora Helvets at the confirmation of His Imperial Majesty, Philip I. It is of our nature, as living beings, to be incredibly curious of unknown - though some of us are more inclined to inquisition more than others. If you consider yourself an adventurer; a soldier, warrior, anything of the similar like in pursuit of prestige and copious amounts of coin… this notice will be of great importance to you! On behalf of the Imperial Hunters, approved by the late Emperor John IV and confirmed by his Imperial Majesty, Philip I, I come to you with great pleasure to announce the production of bounties in our great Empire once more! Found back ages ago in Vailor, we have taken it to our hands to alert the citizens of the Isles that the plague of monsters in our varying homes has risen to a concerning peak! We ask for your blade and intellect, offering grand rewards in return for the eradication of the many beasts found lingering outside capitals, settlements and towns alike. With a sealed goal, we believe the combined effort of the gifted warriors and travellers of today can put an end to the rampant spread of damnable creatures terrorizing the townsfolk throughout the land we reside in - our homes. The Imperial Hunters are an assembly of dutiful people committed to guarding the innocent from monsters of all kinds that wish to ravage everything in sight, while also allowing those who assist in the removal of the aforementioned horrors to profit off their good deeds. Every posted bounty will have a set reward for the monster slain; should the defined monster be slain, proof of its demise must be sent back to the bounty’s poster in order to claim the mentioned reward. That said, we encourage those who encounter such beasts or wish to claim the posted bounty, to contact the Imperial Hunters, or specifically the Imperial Huntsman, Lord Philip Augustus de Capua, with haste. Example of a bounty board notice. Wanted: (E.g. 'Giant’') Threat level: (E.g. 'Easy') Description of beast(s): (E.g. A hairy beast with a brutal club.) Location: (E.g. Johannesburg, Blackwald, Haelun’or etc.) Rewards: (E.g. Minas or special item)
  15. THE LAWS OF MONSTERS AND UNNATURAL ANOMALIES Penned by Lord Philip Augustus de Capua, Imperial Huntsman and Lady Eleanora Helvets at the approval of His Imperial Majesty, Philip I. The Empire has long been plagued by beasts of all different creations. Feral animals and magical beasts have been the cause of many innocent lives lost. Yet the Empire has little knowledge of these creatures, and so they must be properly classified and codified as an addition to the Imperial Laws. The Laws of Monsters and Unnatural Anomalies supersede all lower Ducal and Provincial Laws, both for the ease of the Empire’s bounty boards and for a safer Empire. Classification of a Monster A monster is officially classified as: Any creature, humanoid or otherwise, that has an instinctive malicious intent. Any creature, humanoid or otherwise, that is defiant to the natural order of the World. Any creature, humanoid or otherwise, that is abnormally grotesque or physically unnatural. Any creature, humanoid or otherwise, that is created from magic with malicious intent. Any creature, magical in origin, that mimics sentience to disguise blind obedience. The Codified Laws Licenses are needed to any man to track, hunt, and kill Monsters. Licenses may be bought from the Imperial Administration for a hundred-and-fifty mina. Only the licensed may harvest and sell parts of Monsters. Only the licensed may own parts of Monsters for their own collection. All hunts must be premeditated. Sentient monsters (ex: trolls) are first required to be reasoned with, and then determined by the hunter if the monster is deserving of death. Any failed monster hunt is to be reported to the Imperial Huntsman’s office. Any monster attacks are to be reported to the local nobility and guard force. Rogue hunters and unlicensed hunters are to be treated as monsters. The hunter is to be paid, and provide the head (or other significant limb) of the monster as evidence of his deed. If a man harbors or defends a monster in any capacity, the man will be treated as a monster. If a community worships a monster in any capacity, the community will be treated as a monster den and set to torch. If a man lay with another man, they are both monsters. This applies to all races. If a man lay with a Kharajyr or Orc, they are a monster and all offspring produced are monsters. If a man has an unnatural skin color or additional abnormal limbs, they will be treated as a monster. Monsters Defined by the Crown Necroid A Necroid is a monster that typically feeds on the corpses of Mankind. They are often undead themselves, and congregate wherever bodies are found (battlefields, graveyards). The most common Necroid are ghouls and vodniks. Specters Specters are ghostly figures, dead individuals stuck in the world of the living by a means of cosmic binding. They are almost entirely distrustful, and are exceptionally dangerous when they are allowed to roam freely. The most common Specters are wraiths and haunts. Feral Beasts Feral Beasts are primarily woodland animals that have become overly aggressive and hostile. They are extremely territorial and have an instinctive ferocity. The most common feral Beasts are wolves, gators and (in times of war) wild dogs. Cursed Cursed are those who have been affected by dark magic and as a result have been hexed into a curse. Oftentimes, the curse itself can be lifted, but only under very specific circumstances. The most common Cursed are wolfmen. Regarding hunting Cursed individuals: Aim not to slay these creatures, unless absolutely necessary. Aim to lift the curse first, and if put in a situation of life and death-- by all means, defend your life and slay the monster. Hybrids A Hybrid is a monster that has many similarities with our world’s common creatures, yet their forms are mutated and corrupted and dangerous in nature. More often as winged creatures, hybrids prefer to create nests and act extremely territorial. The most common Hybrids are harpies and griffins. Insectoids Insectoids are monsters with a likeness to common insects. They are, in contrast to normal insects, much larger and have a deadlier mindset. Like Hybrids, most Insectoids prefer to create a nest and settle down in a permanent home. The most common Insectoids are arachnids and sprites. Elementa Elementa are almost exclusively magical in creation. Often created by mages, elementa are often regarded as simple performing servants or unrelenting sentinels. The most common Elementa are golems. Relics Relics are monsters descended from a long forgotten age. They are the most rare of monsters, and are perhaps the most dangerous due to very little academic study and practical application. There most common relics are Wendigos, ‘Blood-suckers’ and Leshens. Ogres Ogres are large humanoid creatures more often capable of the most basic intelligence. They are sentient beings and have a simple understanding of the world around them. The most common Ogres are trolls. Draconids Draconids are winged beasts and perhaps the most largest monsters recorded. Their skin comprises of surprisingly resistant scales and are very difficult to kill. Very few draconid species remain, with drakes and dragons becoming nearly extinct. The most common Draconids are chimeras, wyverns and forktails. Witches Witches are monsters that have an affinity towards dark magic. Often regarded as instinctively deceitful and devious, witches utilize their magical attunements to manipulate the world around them. Frost witches, however, have the tendency to specifically target males, and supposedly grant wishes to folk that unveil that they’re a witch. Some witches operate alone, while others work in groups called covens. Bryophytes Bryophytes are the result of an unnatural binding between Mankind and nature. They are corrupted individuals whose minds have been plagued by parasitic spores, leading to eventual madness. Satyrs An unnatural being; half-goat, half-man. Generally seen with a pair of horns, and goat legs. Any information regarding the identification of Monsters can be found at the Imperial Huntsman's Office, Lord Philip Augustus de Capua. This also applies to people wishing to report a monster and its' whereabouts. Furthermore, all previous monster licenses are hereby nullified. All former monster hunters must once again submit an application for a license to the appropriate authority.
  16. JOHANNESBURG ARENA DISTRICT This district of the city is the pride of the empire, built upon the solid stone foundations of humanities most glorious. The Arena District provides pure gore and entertainment to all whom find a home in any corner of the Empire. Brave warriors from the deep damp marshes of Savoy, the southernmost borders of the heartland, and beyond even the farthest reaches of Oren’s northern holdings. Upholding the long held martial traditions of Oren, both friendly and injurious competition will be allowed within our great arena’s walls. Be it a joust or trial by combat, the arena will oft be the stage of observable conflicts for the citizens and guests of Johannesburg. An annual recall to the capital to compete for prestige, packing the city with the presence of citizens from across the holdings of the Empire. The district is host to countable events, racing and tourney proceedings, along with a smatter of other activities. Racing as mentioned is a very popular sport within the capital, attracting hordes of gentry and nobility alike to the number of equestrian competitions in which to compete. Within the city's hippodrome they dash for glory on mares of all comely shapes, and sturdy sizes. The event is also popular especially amongst the women of the realm, no bloodletting takes place and riders are oft pondered upon by both the married and maidens alike. The Jockeys of the realm rest easy, as fame awaits those who ride in skillful style, whether peasant, gentry, or any of the like. But so too are more traditional sports honored with equal fame involved. Since fleeing but another continent, keep heart. Humanity still keeps with tradition. Within the district the Joust is still prevalent. Though quartered off as a sport for the nobility the proceeding is watched on by crowds of all kinds. Clad in glimmering steel plate, their horses adorned with sigils, Knights of the realm clash. The loud crack of lances isn’t heard as oft as the Empire’s time in Vailor. But once every year the nobles of the realm flock en masse to the capital to compete in it’s Grand Tourney. The last of the noteworthy events held in the capital is that of the melee. Another sport open to all the warriors of the realm, men of all backgrounds come to the main arena to compete for hefty title, those victors are dubbed ‘Champion of the Empire.’ and given incredible prestige by its prospect. Alike the Joust, both are entwined into the Grand Tourney of the realm, and only happen every now and again. Still the arena is host to many minor brawls, as any combat on foot is a spectacle for the locals, and those looking for the culture shock of the city. The district also finds itself home to many vendors, having flocked to the specific sector of the city in order to profit off of it’s many rivalries. Throughout the riddled roads of the Arena district grizzled armors, weaponsmiths, and leather workers sell their wares to all comers. Their colorful and sometimes ratty shops littered throughout. Whether you’re a squire on the slide, a pagan looking for decent steel, or a full blown Knight of the Realm, all find themselves at home in the advantageous merchants that make a living there. As part of the duties of the Imperial Gamemaster, event coordination and maintenance of the arena itself will find itself committed to under their guidance. Event proposals or requests to hold an event will be reviewed by the Imperial Gamemaster as well. Those wishing to staff the arena and adjacent vendors may apply to do so, or seek the stewards servicing the region. Some residences may find themselves reserved by the Gamemaster himself for workers and career fighters, so that many may have easy access to their work, without fear that visitors or residents blocking them from an opportunity to live adjacent to their work.

Authored by Ser Rakim of House Yar and doctored by his Excellency, the Imperial Archchancellor Ser Leopold of House Horen His Imperial Majesty’s war machine, a reminder of Man’s superiority to the lesser descendants. “You are a soldier in the Imperial Legion. You stand alongside other soldiers, brothers-in-arms, comrades, who fight for the Empire. You fight for Country, for Humanity, and for the Emperor, to whom we give our lives for so that our bodies may be blessed with a glorious death, and our souls bathed in the brilliant light that resonates from our Empire. It is the highest honor to fight in these same illustrious ranks which have produced some of the most exalted and renowned men in the Empire, and to call them your superiors. Your responsibility, and that of your fellow soldiers is to help ensure that our magnificent imperium is defended from its enemies. You will smite our foes wherever you find them, with the fervent passion and fury of fanatical devotion that comes with being an Imperial Soldier.” –Emperor Peter Chivay, 1st of Grand Harvest, 1457 A learned Lundic military officer once said “Emperor, Decurion, Oren - these three words forge an army.” Albeit such words were spoken over a century ago during the Imperium Tertius, they still ring true to many Heartlanders today. Serving under His Imperial Majesty the Holy Orenian Emperor John III Owyn and his chosen commanders, the Imperial Legion is created to defend the Imperium Quintus from both the internal and external threats embedded in the Isles of Axios. The men of the Imperial Legion make up a well disciplined fighting force, demonstrating the best of Man and ready to serve the Empire unto death. WHY FIGHT? “You will see things that few will be asked to bear witness to, and you will have to face your worst fears. But face them you must, with strength, fortitude, devotion and valor; for it is on these qualities that our country is built. But rest assured, there will be a brother behind you to ensure your faith remains constant.” –Helton Chivay, addressing the soldiers of Kaedrin It is one of the greatest honors to serve under His Imperial Majesty as a defender of Man’s dominion. Young men seeking glory and respect are welcomed to join and become apart of such a divine brotherhood. For many of the men that join the Imperial Legion, their battle-brothers are the closest thing they have to a real family. Others might join in hopes of obtaining a better life. As of the Imperial Retiree Program of 1579, those that actively serve the Imperial Legion for 8 years (2 Saint’s months) and are also a Class A or Class B citizen will be provided a farmstead in order to raise a proper family. Furthermore, the legions, when acting exemplary and grand in the eyes of the Emperor and Country, they may be granted a bonus from the Imperial Treasury. THE EVOCATII If the legionary chooses to continue their service in the legion after completing a successful Tour of Service (8 Years), they may reenlist and be granted the immediate rank of Evocatus, which affords them the privileges with that rank. Before they decide to become Evocatii, the legionary must first sign a contract binding them to another 5 years of service. CHAIN OF COMMAND “Go forth and ensure our prosperity and your eventual glory. Fight with pride and fervor, for it is better to die for a purpose than to live without reason. A sheep has no place in the legion, but a lion is always considered.” –Emperor Robert Primus Aeldinicus Chivay, 1462 An artist’s rendition of John I Frederick, Henry Rothesay, and Augustus d’Amaury planning for the battle of Hoar Hill, 1541 OFFICERS PRINCEPS [O5] The Princeps is the supreme commander of all Imperial Legions. He has complete command in the field. The Princeps may manage specific sections of the legions and further delegate the overall management of the legion. The Princeps is traditionally held by the Emperor or the Crown Prince. IMPERIAL LEGATE [O4] The Imperial Legate is the chosen commander of the Imperial Legion and as such, only follows the orders of His Imperial Majesty and the Princeps. The Imperial Legate is responsible for organizing the Imperial Legion as needed as well as assuming the role of commander on the battlefield should the need arise. TRIBUNE [O3] A tribune is assigned to each region hosting a brigade part of the Imperial Legions. The tribune leads his designated brigade under the orders of the Imperial Legate. He is responsible for maintaining law and order in his assigned region as well as making sure his brigade is well manned well fitted for battle. DECURION [O2] Decurions are tasked with leading the companies under the brigade. The Decurions are the forefront tactical leaders on the battlefield and are expected to carry on the commands from superior officers with no mistakes. Decurions are expected to manage their brigades by making sure their companies are well supplied. Should the need arise for more supplies, a Decurion must make a request to the Tribune or fill the need with his own men. ENSIGN [O1] Ensigns are officer cadets that assist and enforce the Decurion’s commands, and are also given the duty and privilege of holding the legion’s standard. They ensure formations are kept in line and serve as advisors to Decurion when out in the battlefield. Ensigns are generally the officers that focus on recruiting and relaying information from the Decurion to the ranks of foot. RANKS OF FOOT KNIGHT [E7] When knights first join the Imperial Legion, they are put into this rank by default. Knights still obey the orders of their company’s Decurion and his designated Ensigns. Knights are given special privilege for officer ranks if they demonstrate valor and effort on the battlefield as well as a knack for strategy. PRIMUS [E6] The Primus is the elite of the enlisted. A veteran of both peace and war, a loyal soldier, and a man of many skills and achievements. They have proven themselves as the cream of the crop, and are the model enlisted soldier. The Primus has the choice of pursuing a Knighthood under the Order, or choose to command under the Officer wing, starting at Ensign. EVOCATUS [E5] The Evocatii are longtime soldiers that have proven their dedication to the legion and the Empire through loyal and unyielding service. They are the only soldiers in the legion bound by a five year service contract, but are afforded special privileges during their service. An evocatus is granted a bonus upon reenlistment, and is not required to participate in several general enlisted duties. DECANUS [E4] Veteran Men-at-Arms that survive their first tour of duty and show themselves as capable and well disciplined soldiers achieve the rank of Decanus. A Decanus means “chief of ten” and is the representative of his tent party, comprised of nine other men and himself. He acts as a role model to his fellow brothers-in-arms. A Decanus may often be placed in command of the Unoathed in their company, ensuring they are properly trained. MAN-AT-ARMS [E3] The Man-at-arms are the backbone of the legion’s military forces. The Men-at-arms make up the main battle line, and are the rank-and-file soldier of the legion, who follows orders willingly and obediently. The Man-at-arms is to respect every superior, and must refuse to contradict their orders in a public setting. If a critique is absolutely necessary, the Man-at-arms may request a private audience. FOOTMAN [E2] The Footman has advanced past Ranker and has proven himself to be loyal and capable of basic military etiquette and discipline. The Footman will be put under a personal apprenticeship with a higher enlisted, who will act as their battle brother and mentor. Much like the Men-at-arms, the Footman must obey and respect all command in the legion. If a critique is absolutely necessary, the Footman may request a private audience. RANKER [E1] Those who make it through initiation become oathed men to the Imperial Legion, known as Rankers. They make up the bulk of the Imperial Legion and are treated with more respect than the unoathed. Typically they are the force that deals with menial labor on the campaign. Upon becoming a Ranker, one must serve another 2 years before they can seek an honorable discharge. A Ranker may not request a private audience to critique a lawful order. THE UNOATHED [E0] The unoathed are the freshly enlisted men of the Imperial Legion, wearing an armband to signify their status. Before becoming a ranker, an unoathed must serve for one year, acting as their initiation. The unoathed may quit at anytime with no consequences. During this time, the unoathed is only referred to as UNOATHED and is fed the scraps in dining halls. They are put through a training regimen geared towards the brigade they have joined where they are expected to learn what their job is in the brigade. After one year, the enlisted take their oath and must endure the tradition of blood striping from their superiors. Afterwards, the unoathed becomes an official member of the Imperial Legion and may be referred to by name once more. BILLETS Billets are specialized ranks are jobs given to men of the Imperial Legion in each brigade. During peace and war it is their duty to fulfill these roles just as they would fulfill their roles on the battlefield. They are as follows: COOK (1 per brigade) Cooks ensure rations are made for each soldier in his brigade before going on scouting missions and prepare at least three meals per day during peacetime. It is their duty to tell the Quartermaster when they are in need of ingredients. They are expected to keep a clean kitchen and may take on an apprentice. MESSENGER (2 per brigade) Messengers deliver and receive reports from command to deliver to their brigade. These roles are usually given to Ensigns. Must be literate. REPORT MASTER (1 per brigade) Deals with roster and general reports for the brigade. Must be literate. QUARTERMASTER (1 per brigade) Typically given to ranks E4 and above , the Quartermaster ensures everyone in their brigade is well fitted. They take count of supplies of each brigade and report to command on any supplies needed. Furthermore, a Head Quartermaster is assigned to each legion, acting as the prime manager of the legionary armory. DISCIPLINARIAN (1 per brigade) Role typically given to Ensign, but no lower than Decanus. The Disciplinarian leads training exercises at least once per Saint’s week to ensure the brigade is in shape. The disciplinarian, during training exercises, is given permission to discipline anyone in the brigade save those of officer rank unless directed by an officer superior to the former. DRILL INSTRUCTOR (1 per company) The Drill Instructor is tasked with the training of the Unoathed within their respective company. The role is typically assigned to a Decanus, and they are responsible for ensuring the qualified Unoathed pass their trials and formally take their oath. MEDIC Those well versed in medicine and the healing arts that ensure the health of the brigade. THE LEGIONS The Legions of the Empire hail from all the prominent regions under His Imperial Majesty’s dominion. Each legion is assigned to a region and will be afforded almost complete autonomy in their operations, answering only to the Princeps or His Imperial Majesty. The legions shall maintain jurisdiction of their own region and shall not infringe upon another legion’s province. A military council will convene often to gauge the direction the legions are heading and act as a meeting to discuss needs and future strategic plans. Wayforts will also be constructed throughout the Empire to provide a rallying point for these regional legions. Much like its first manifestation, Death’s Head is a foot guard unit for the 1st Legion. They specialize as shock infantry, the very first to engage the enemy and the very last to pull out. Death’s Head is made up of the more fanatical warriors of The Crownlands. This comes at a grave cost however with casualty rates being one of the highest in the legion. Historically, only one in every five new recruits survive their first battle. As a result, the camaraderie among those of the 1st brigade goes unmatched and those that do survive their first battle tend do well the rest of their careers in the Imperial Legion. 2nd Imperial Brigade of the Crownlands Legion Nauzica Tribune: Tribune Ser Edwyn Harwyn ((Thotpyrodude)) The 2nd Brigade formed in battle array, led by the Nauzican Gentlemen, 1570 The 2nd Brigade returns to its roots as the cavalry unit of The Crownlands much like it had been during the reign of John I. These men specialize in mounted warfare, using lances to skewer enemy footmen and to knock off opposing mounted units. Their attacks are swift and hard for the enemy to counter if lead correctly. The 2nd Brigade also serves as scouts for the rest of the brigade, quickly going behind enemy lines to assess the proper route of strategy for the Imperial Legate. Furthermore, whilst not directly deployed, the Nauzican Brigade is tasked with the safety of the Emperor and Imperial Family, acting as their premier bodyguards. 3rd Imperial Brigade of the Crownlands Legion Sappers Tribune: His Excellency, the Imperial Archchancellor Ser Leopold of Marna ((Islamadon)) An artist's rendition recalling a brutal siege of attrition, the moated keep of Kal’Valen, 1542 The 3rd Sappers Brigade is made up of versatile men specializing in siegecraft. Often an underappreciated unit in the legion, Sappers serve an important role in the construction of siege weaponry and the construction of defenses in times of external forces invading Man’s dominion. In recent years, the 3rd Sappers Brigade has also taken on the responsibility of purging necrotic beings across the realm via the will of his Imperial Majesty, John III. With defense of the realm comes trust, and the 3rd Sappers Brigade is made up of some of the most honest war engineers in the realm. https://www.lordofthecraft.net/forums/topic/151183-imperial-guide-to-siegecraft/#comment-1428181 LEGIO II HANSETIA 2nd Legion of Haense Imperial Legate: Prince Andrew Barbanov ((preliatorII)) 1st Royal Brigade of the Hansetic Legion His Majesty’s Own Tribune: Tuvya Berhal ((isbadguy)) The predecessor to the 1st Hansetic Brigade, the Golden Crow heavy infantry engaged in combat with the Dreadlandic opposition during an imperial raid on enemy territory, 1568 His Majesty’s Own, the 1st Royal Brigade of Haense, serves as the heavy infantry of the Hansetic Legion, excelling in in anti-cavalry combat as they advance forth in pike formation. Being his Majesty’s Own armed forces, this Brigade is stationed in the Capital of the Kingdom of Haense, Saint Karlsburg. From there they lead the Hansetic Legion. 2nd Royal Brigade of the Hansetic Legion Sons of the North Tribune: Count Sergei Kovachev ((NJBB)) Hansetic archers warding off Dreadlandic ambitions, during a raid on Imperial soil, near the town of Vsenk, 1569 His Majesty’s 2nd Brigade, the Son’s of the North, are the lightest infantry found within the entire Imperial Army, serving as archers most of the time during combat. Staying near other bulks of infantry, a well aimed longbow shot from these brigade archers can easily eliminate any hostile targets opposing the Empire’s Legions. If the situation calls upon it, members of the Brigade can act as outriders, scouting ahead of the Legion’s advancements and securing the surrounding area during a march. This Brigade’s headquarters is found in the County of Turov, led by the Right Honourable, Sergei of House Kovachev. 3rd Royal Brigade of the Hansetic Legion Sons of the Sea Tribune: Marquis Fiske Vanir ((InfamousGerman)) Marines of the 3rd Hansetic Brigade fight for sport in the flooded hippodrome during a festival held in the Imperial Capital, 1575 The 3rd Royal Marines, known for their martial abilities regarding Naval Warfare. Being the sole naval group within the Imperial Army, they are tasked with the removal of threats on the seas, while the Marine’s sister Brigades remove the threats on land. If it were to ever occur, the Marines have the capability to form as a primarily light foot Brigade during a pitched battle, other than that, the Brigade takes turn patrolling the Northern Seas of the Empire, ensuring all oceanic trade routes are secure and well patrolled. The Marine Brigade is made of some of the hardiest, as they have to deal with the Northern Climate whilst being at sea. They are situated in the March of Vasiland, a border territory held by the Marquis of House Vanir, Sir Fiske. I swear to protect with iron vigilance the legitimate foundation of the Empire, its lands, administrators and its titles. I swear to serve with great diligence the Imperial Legions for a period of not less than two years and as much longer as may be required by the needs of my service. I swear to uphold loyalty unto death to my comrades-in-arms and my legitimate commanders, and to expect loyalty unto death from those that may be under the command of me. I swear that I would die before fleeing the field in shame. Ave Orenia!” MEDALS AND HONORS The Imperial Legions grant special medals and honors onto its soldiers to both recognize their dedication and praise their service to Crown and Country. All medals may be worn during special formal occasions, and may even be worn on formal attire after they have left the service. ORDER OF THE IMPERIAL CROWN [#8] The highest honor one can achieve, the Order of the Imperial Crown is reserved for only the greatest of the Empire. Men such as Uthor Silverblade, Peter Chivay would be awarded with the Order of the Imperial Crown. These men wear the medal upon their neck proudly, knowing the Emperor himself has seen their actions as the most worthy of any man in the Empire. ORDER OF MERIT [#7] One of the highest honors a man can achieve, the three degrees of the Order of Merit are awarded only to the most stalwart and heroic of Imperial men and women. Through battle or otherwise, the bearers of the Order of Merit have proven themselves to be those the Emperor can rely on the most for their loyalty and unwavering devotion to his vision. ORDER OF THE RHOSWENII[#6] Named in recognition of the past Order of the White Rose, the Order of the Rhoswenii is a medal granted to members of the legions that have proven to be experienced fighters and exceptional leaders. MEDAL OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE [#5] Containing only a single degree, the Medal of Distinguished Service is awarded most commonly to soldiers having served in the Imperial forces for upwards of fifteen years. The bearers of this title wear the medal proudly on their uniform. ORDER OF BRAVERY [#4] For those who show themselves to be truly selfless and willing to charge headlong into the fires, there is the Order of Bravery. Often heroic Knights and courageous soldiers who have shown little regard for their safety when the Empire is on the line. NATIONAL DEFENSE MEDAL [#3] The National Defense Medal is awarded for those that have served their entire Tour of Service of eight years. GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL [#2] The Good Conduct Medal is awarded to soldiers that have proven to be exemplary models and have received no negative marks on performance. LEGION SERVICE MEDAL [#1] The Legion Service Medal is awarded to soldiers that achieve the rank of Footman [E2].
  19. ON FASHION AND PRESENTABILITY In order to be a welcome presence at court, it is required for the subject to be fashionable or at the least presentable. Certain aspects of court fashion are constantly changing, with most such fashion imitating the emperor’s personal tastes, however other aspects remain the same. The expectations of men in regards to clothing are as follows: A man coming before the court must generally be clean shaven, with some exceptions. Full beards are not permitted, however moustaches are, along with beards in the Johannian fashion, (i.e https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/22/Attributed_to_Jacob_Hoefnagel_-_Gustavus_Adolphus%2C_King_of_Sweden_1611-1632_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg) Those violating this rule have been known to be compulsarily shaven by the imperial chamberlains. A man must never wear armor or weapons at court, unless he is immediately returning from a battle in which he has fought or has been granted express permission from the emperor, such as his retainers are. A man’s hair must be neat and well-groomed. The expectation is that it is combed with oil or a variety of grease, and if a male courtier’s natural hair is too long it must be tied up tightly behind his head in a queue, and kept off the shoulders in all formal circumstances. (i.e http://41.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m3sb9aJxRW1qif5s3o4_1280.png) A particular kind of ribbon is often used to tie this queue known as a ‘tarcord’. A man must always be in possession of a hat in the Imperial fashion, often plumed if one can afford it, however he is expected to doff it when inside. A man’s clothing must always reflect the fashion of the time if he is financially able to do so. To fail to meet this criteria is to invite the disdain of the court, as one is often judged on appearance. However, if the case may be that he cannot afford to do so and this is made extremely plain, it may have an opposite effect, a sort of ‘rustic charm’, however this is highly irregular and thereby discouraged as an approach. The present Imperial Johannian fashion is rich, rigid, austere and often even clerical in appearance, (i.e https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/Portrait_of_Philip_II_of_Spain_by_Sofonisba_Anguissola_-_002b.jpg or https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5c/Titian_-_Portrait_of_Philip_II_-_WGA22971.jpg) A man must always wear a ruff collar and sleeves with his raiment (See above images). ON MANNERS, FORMALITY AND GENERAL COURTESY To live a prosperous and fruitful life at court and attain your ultimate objective, one must adopt the manners and demeanour required of any courtier. There are often complex rules and procedures for matters of courtesy, however they are quickly learned. When meeting and/or greeting an individual, one must employ both the proper form of verbal address as well as the correct physical gestures. Firstly, the physical signals are as follows. When a man is greeting a woman of higher or equal social status to him, he must kiss her hand and doff his hat when addressing her. When a man is greeting a woman of lower social status to him, he must merely bow his head curtly when addressing her. When a man is greeting a man of higher or equal social status to him, he must bow to him and doff his hat when addressing him, with the proper procedure for bowing established later in this document. When a man is greeting a man of lower social status to him, he must merely bow his head curtly when addressing him. In ascending order, the titles of address among members of court are as follows. In the case of an individual possessing multiple titles (As in an emperor’s second son, who is traditionally prince as well as Duke of Marna) the higher title takes precedence in address. Commoners devoid of title are to be addressed as ‘Mr./Mrs. (Surname)’. Doctors with a doctorate, honorary or practical, awarded to them by an educational institution or the emperor are to be addressed as ‘Dr. (Surname)’. Knights are to be addressed as ‘ser’. Barons and baronesses are to be addressed as ‘My lord/lady’, ‘Lord/Lady (Firstname)’ or simply ‘sir/ma’am’. Viscounts and viscountesses are to be addressed as ‘My lord/lady’, ‘Lord/Lady (Firstname)’ or simply ‘sir/ma’am’ Counts and countesses (As well as earls) are to be addressed as ‘My lord/lady’, ‘Lord (Firstname)’ or simply ‘sir/ma’am’. Margraves and margravines are to be addressed as ‘My lord/lady’, ‘Lord/Lady (Firstname)’ or simply ‘sir/ma’am’. Dukes and duchesses are to be addressed as ‘Your Grace’ first, however after the first address it is an option to address the person in question as either ‘Your Grace’, ‘My lord/lady’, ‘Lord/Lady (Firstname)’ or simply ‘sir/ma’am’. Privy councillors as well as diplomats and other high-ranking civic officials are to be addressed as ‘Your Excellency’ first, however after the first address it is an option to address the person in question as either ‘Your Excellency’ or ‘sir’. Princes and princesses are to be addressed as ‘Your Imperial Highness’, however after the first address it is an option to address the person in question as either ‘Your Imperial Highness’ or simply ‘sir/ma’am’. The empress is to be addressed as ‘Your Imperial Majesty’, however after the first address it is an option to address her as ‘Your Majesty’, ‘my lady’ or simply ‘ma’am’. It is worth noting that in the case of the landed peerage, it is customary and an option to address them by the territory of which they rule over in the fashion of ‘Lord (Territory)’. For example, if a theoretical John Smith is entitled the Baron of Grenville, he may be addressed (Even preferably at times) as ‘Lord Grenville’. However, this is never done with members of the royalty or other titles above ducal level, such as for an archduke. For example, Prince Alexander, despite also being Duke of Marna, is never addressed as Lord Marna, however the Roswell Dukes of Istria may be referred to as Lord Istria. This is an old custom originating from the reign of Godfrey the Exalted, returned to prominence under Emperors Peter and Robert however abolished once again after the latter’s deposition. With the restoration of the Empire in 1526, it has become codified into court etiquette yet again. It is also worth noting that while the address of familiar first names have been included in this lexicon, it is not customary to refer to a person using their first name unless that person is of lower or equal rank to you. For example, a duke may refer to a baron as Lord John, however it is not recommended that a baron or commoner refer to a duke as Lord Charles. When referencing people in speech to others, it is expected that you refer to them by formal title and not their personal name. In the public environment of court, titles and formalities are expected to be used even between family members. For example, the emperor will commonly refer to his brothers in a public setting as ‘sir’, and they will commonly refer to him as ‘Your Imperial Majesty’ or ‘sire’. ON THE IMPERIAL PRESENCE The imperial presence is the phrase used to refer to the company of the Holy Orenian Emperor. If you were in a palace complex, and the emperor were in one of the chambers thereof, you would enter the imperial presence if you entered that room. The emperor may often be present in outdoor settings, or in single large halls without side-chambers. Therefore, the area ten feet around the emperor's person has been designated as his presence. By law and custom, no person may enter this presence without rendering courtesy to the Crown. ‘Rendering courtesy’ here means to acknowledge by a bow or curtsy that the person holds a position of honor. There is a proper way to either bow or curtsey when entering the imperial presence. In entering the imperial presence, males are expected to bow and scrape. Scraping refers to the drawing back of the right leg as one bows, such that the right foot scrapes the floor or earth. While executing such a bow, the man's right hand is pressed horizontally across the abdomen while the left is held out from the body, often with a flourish. If the man holds a cane, it is always grasped in the hand held out from the body. In entering the imperial presence, women are expected to bow their heads, bend the knees outward rather than straight ahead, often sweeping one foot behind, while using her hands to hold her skirt out from her body. This process is complicated when one enters the Imperial presence as the subject of the emperor and/or the court’s attention, such as when entering a room where the emperor awaits you, for example for a priorly arranged formal audience. In such events, a bow or courtesy must be completed first at the entryway to that room and then again on entering the sovereign’s immediate presence. Kneeling before the emperor is not customary or required save in the circumstance that you are in the direct and explicit attention of the sovereign and are either: Pledging allegiance to him, such as in a swearing of fealty. Surrendering to him, such as when taken captive. Pleading for mercy or forgiveness. Asking the hand in marriage of one of his relatives. If you wish to speak with the emperor and he is not busy, wait just outside the presence until you are bidden to approach. You might make yourself more obvious by bowing or curtsying. You must never stare. If you must speak to get the emperor's attention (although this isn't usually necessary) you might try ‘Forgive me, your Imperial Majesty, but…’ or ‘Your Imperial Majesty, may I approach?’ There may be times when one must speak with the emperor and you are unable to gracefully arrange it yourself. You might discreetly ask the chamberlain or archchancellor to approach the emperor on your behalf to arrange a time and place, and ask them to have you sent for when the emperor has time to hear you (or linger around and see if they're able to get you in right away). There are several simple rules and conventions which one must never break when in the Imperial presence. One must always address the emperor as ‘Your Imperial Majesty’ first, however after the first address, it is an option to address the emperor as either ‘Your Imperial Majesty,’ ‘Majesty,’ ‘sir,’ or simply ‘sire’. One must never look directly at the emperor. One must never touch the emperor or in any way violate his person, unless to do so would be to save him from mortal danger. One must always remove a hat, helm or other headwear in the Imperial presence. One must never turn one’s back upon the emperor, and must always exit the room backwards. One must never interrupt the emperor, or speak while he is speaking. One must not sit down in the imperial presence unless given leave by him to do so. One must stand up on the emperor’s entering of a room. One must, on entering the imperial presence and being addressed by the emperor, not exit his presence until leave is granted. If one must leave immediately or urgently, they must request, using the words, ‘By Your Imperial Majesty’s leave, I...’ One must never come before the emperor armed, except in certain circumstances, such as in the case of his retainers, highest officials, family or immediately following a battle in which one has fought. One must never refer to the emperor’s first name in the imperial presence. However, outside of the imperial presence, such as in some publications, documents or general conversation, it is acceptable to refer to the emperor as his given name and regnal number, provided his requisite titles are also applied. One must never refer to the emperor’s dynastic or familial name under any circumstances. One must never sit in the emperor’s throne or wear one of the emperor’s crowns under any circumstances. Exceptions are made for sitting in the throne in the event of the realm’s chief judicial officer giving verdict. ((PIN THIS PLEASE))

  22. You enter The Palace of St. Adrian’s throne room as another petitioner exits, an expression of relief on their face as they hurry by. Flanking you on either side are stands with two levels, with courtiers and petitioners speaking quietly to one another. The guards maintain a heavy presence, all sporting arbalests as they watch you warily. Behind them, the banners of the various fiefs and historical titles under the Holy Orenian Empire stand tall and proud. Quietly you are lead past a guard onto the lower level of the stands, leaving you to watch as you wait for your chance to speak. Standing near the Emperor himself are several Imperial councilors, conversing quietly among themselves. The likes of the Minister of the Interior, and even the Imperial Archchancellor are all in attendance for the public petitions of the day. It is not long before the parties preceding you finish making their cases, and a herald calls your name. Beckoning to you from the steps onto the stands, a guard escorts you along the carpeted path and before the Emperor himself. His demeanour stiffens as you approach, his brows furrowed as he looks to you inquisitively. Finally, you are told to halt by the guard escorting you. The Emperor gestures to you after with a slight nod. “Speak; what do you wish to bring to my attention today?”
