The corruption and fate of Lady Allessandra Amador is, by now, well known throughout the Realm; its circumstances need not be recited once more here. Lady Allessandra held high posts in the Prikaz, both Morrivi and Esrova, for most of my living memory. She had been our Chamberlain and Custodian, and in those years of service we did not once suspect her subterfuge. It brings me great shame that it passed beneath my suspicions even as she served at my side, and through me, the side of the Queen; it brings me great relief that the Inquisition has so rooted out the threat to the sanctity of the Palace and the safety of our People. It is by the Will of Godan which we draw breath. It is by the Will of her Royal Majesty, Amaya of Venzia, that these courts do serve the people of Hanseti-Ruska. Fabian d'Arkent-Kortrevich, having been away celebrating the birth of his son, returns to Haense with a grim and wearisome stare. Nothing but the most burdensome duties await him. Once the late Custodian's office opens to his key and the servantry ordered to gut it; once a candle is lit in his apartments' window; once his own children are put to bed, his wife assauged, his friends written to and comforted, the prayers said and the papers sorted, the Grand Lord pours himself a crystalline glass of absinthe and light his pipe, staring into the Prikaz courtyard and the looming Lorraine beyond. "When I told you to choose, Alles," he says to no one who can hear him. "I suppose I hadn't known all it was you were torn between."

The young Heir to Mondstadt peers at the shifting figures within the family manor, twisting a knot of sailor's rope around and around his hands. His studies go untouched for the moment: storm-eyes fixed on his mother's office door, the worried frown of his father, and the strange, pallid countenance of his younger brother. A little hand drifts to their crest; the stark lorraine, and its sky-blue field. He doesn't understand. Not yet; not really, not in a way that matters. But he will remember the sting and the shadows of - betrayal, is it? Fear? Anger, low and smoldering, for all the anguish which now ripples through their family? Henrik watches. Henrik learns.
