Guide On Commands, And More Tips, For New Players

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, and welcome to LotC, if you are a new player.

This guide was accurate on the date of its creation, and should be accurate at this date, too, unless some things have changed drastically, and I have not been able to edit the guide.

This guide was made because I found far too many players struggling with how to use the commands given to us when we first log on to the LotC server. I hope to eliminate the troubles met by said new players with this guide. It is encouraged that you read through the entire guide, be it you are new to this server, or a seasoned veteran, as it will contain useful information, either way. Anyway, without further ado, let's start the guide:

Logging onto the server the first time:

Upon logging onto the server, you will most likely get this popping up:

U1jQxcn.png

Ok, here it asks you to type in the name for you new character, or 'Persona'. All you have to do is type the name in of your character. My character, for example, is called 'Lorien'.

Here is what happens after typing in the name of your character:

xr4p1WL.png

Now, it is asking your gender. Quite, simple, really. All you do is type 'female' , 'male' or 'other'. In my case, my persona is a male, so I typed: male

Here is what you will get, after:

WtUw8bp.png

It has accepted my gender, and is now asking me for my race. If the race you are looking for is not present, all you have to do is type in 'more' to get a larger list. In my case, my persona (or character) is an elf, so I typed in: elf

Here is what you get, afterwards:

xRN0jAu.png

Now, they ask you your age. Like every other time before this, you input the information of your character. It just so happens that my elf is 104 years old. Please do not follow what I am typing in, as this is just for example purposes. Remember, your character can only be between 5 to 1000 years old, and it must make sense. You cannot have a 1000 year old human, unless he happens to be a dry pile of bones.

I typed in: 104

I got this:

TPDYqCu.png

This is the final question. Do you want your character to age automatically, via the date of the server. If you type yes, you cannot stop this, and you cannot set the age of your character anymore. If you type no, you are able to only age your character, and cannot make them younger. I typed no, but that's just because I prefer controlling my character's age. You can type in yes, if you wish.

After typing in my final preference, it says that my persona has been created! Great, now I can Roleplay on LotC!

But wait....I still have more to tell you, and tips to give. Let's get to that.

The command /p:

Many times have I seen a new person without a bio, and this is because they are not aware of it's existence. It's time to shed light on that. If you type in the command '/p' into your chat bar, you will see this pop up:

jlwwONC.png

This is everything you need to know of your persona. I will go through the basics of each command, and will give you a few other useful commands to help you:

/card This allows you to view your character's card, and shows you what will be shown to others when they shift and right click on you. To view other people's cards, all you have to do is press shift, then right click their character, or you click on their name in the chat bar, and it will show the card. Here is how you know if you got it right (thanks to awesomealex123 for allowing me to use their card):

vBNKSb2.png

/p view [player] This command allows you to view the character card of someone else. This command, however, only works when the other player is online (credit to Jistuma for that).

/p name [new name] This command lets you change the name of your character/persona. Be careful, there is a five minute cool down on using this command, so you can only change persona name every five minutes.

/p prefix [prefix] This allows you to set a prefix to your name. A prefix shows a little box infront of your name, which can convey useful info, such as showing that your character is hooded, or showing that they are a guard. Here, my female character owns an inn, so I typed /p prefix Owner of Inn and got this:

j6Rgs0P.png

Now, I am sick of my prefix, and I want to remove it. I type in /p clearprefix and get this, confirming that it was cleared:

dba737f2a6fe4f67996f0b80903fbe34.png

Please note that you /don't/ only have to use prefixes to say what position your are in. You can use it to show that your character is bandaged, or that they are hooded, or that they are pregnant with a baby since four months. Let's say my character has just jumped into water, and has come out, dripping wet. I could give myself the prefix [soaked], by typing /p prefix Soaked. Simple, yet it adds information which is easily accessible to other people, and saves you from having to add a pointless bio entry like: "He/She is soaking wet" when they will dry soon.

/p age [new age] This lets you change your age. Pretty simple, but there is a catch. You can only get older, so if you mistakenly jot down an age to large...you have to use the trick I call 'resetting persona'. Scroll down a bit and look for the 'resetting persona' tip.

/p autoage Pretty simple, this allows you to make your character automatically age. Warning, however: You cannot go back on this decision without resetting your persona. Again, scroll down for the persona reset tip.

/p addbio This is in green because it is important. A person's bio allows you to learn things about them, such as their looks and attitude. If you get yourself a nice bio, people will now more about how your character acts, and how they look, and allows for greater immersion. To add information to you bio, just type it in, after the command, like this: /p addbio Bob is a tall, dirty man, with ragged clothes and a bad breath.

You are, however, limited to how much you can write for your bio, so type wisely.

/p clearbio Quite simple, really. It allows you to clear your character's biography, so that you can rewrite it.

The command /me:

Warning: This contains some information that is WIP on the server. That info will be put in red, for you.

If you type in the command /me, you will get an interface that pops up, above your inventory. It looks similar to this:

n33Xmyw.png

I will explain what each icon does.

Eye of ender/ enderpearl This allows you to switch on/off XP gain, for the upcoming skills plugin that is being developed.

Book This gives you help on certain things. Click on it, and you will be brought to another interface. This is important, thus its green colour:

cgpuhxw.png

Simply hover your mouse over each of these icons, to get the info on what they will explain about. Click on them to get help for it. I won't go on to explain this, as it is quite self explanatory.

Enderchest Allows you to access an enderchest in character, which basically serves as an extra storage for goods. VIP perk.

Skill tome book For when the server has Skills in it. It will allow you to absorb the skill tome in return for a skill. WIP, as the red name suggests.

Redstone Repeater Thing Gives you information on your personas, and is what tells you of how to delete or create a new persona.

Shows you this:

5LjQjEM.png

Skulls/Heads They are used to represent your personas. The steve heads show personas, the wither heads show locked slots for more personas (unlockable by donating) and normal skeleton skulls show open slots, available to create a persona. Normal players can make 2 personas max.

The command /roleplay:

This command brings up the following text in the chat bar:

XGWJ7cD.png

I will now explain each command available.

/w This is whisper. It is a shorter chat range which allows characters to talk to one another, but with only closer people being able to hear.

/rp This is the roleplay channel. Type /rp to be able to talk in the roleplay chat. This is where most of the chat should be, on this server, and where characters interact.

/s Use this to shout something your character is saying. It is much further than the standard rp chatting, and is can be seen as a loud voice.

/h Use this to get onto the help channel. This is where you can ask for help, and GMs or other helpful players can answer your questions.

/ooc This is a server-wide chat, and everyone can see your text, here. Don't RP on this channel, because this is for Out Of Character stuff.

/looc This is a Local Out Of Character channel, which allows you to deal with imminent issues in roleplay. It is usually used for this, but some other people use it to discuss things pertaining to RP, as well.

/ws The chat that all new people/ non whitelisted people can talk on. It's short for 'wandering soul'

/join Use this to join channels. For example, if you want to joing OOC, type /join Global OOC , or if you want to join the help chat, type /join h. You are not able to chat in a channel unless you join it. /rp and /looc are permanently joined.

/leave This is used to leave a channel. To leave OOC, for example, type /leave global ooc. You cannot, however, leave /rp and /looc channels.

/roleplay chatstyle This is quite important, thus its green colour. It allows you to change your chatstyle to 'Quotation' or 'Default'. When you type the command, it shows either one of these:

T1Guv1j.png

The difference between 'Default' anc 'Quotation' are as follows:

If you type Hello in default, this happens:

sknKoXn.png

If you type Hello in quotation, this happens:

TkLlplL.png

If you type "Hello" in quotation, your text becomes white again, and is in quotation marks. This allows for more intricate roleplay, but makes it slightly more difficult.

/roleplay customcolors This allows you to see custom emote colours, or not. I /highly/ recommend you switch this on, as it allows you to differentiate easily between people emoting (if they have set their own emote colours) and allows you to see your own, cool emote colour.

Here is an example:

7cdL8Bp.png

/roleplay emotecolor This allows you to chose your emote colour. In the picture above, I chose DARK_PURPLE as my emote colour, but you can chose from many. Simply type /roleplay emotecolor to chose your colour. As a note, you need customecolors enabled to see emote colours.

Here is /roleplay emotecolor in use:

/buddylist help Shows commands for your buddylist. Quite useful to aid you in figuring out how the buddylist works.

/buddylist This is your buddylist, a list of people who are your 'buddys' on LotC. Non-donators can have up to 10, and it shows you when your buddys are online, sends you a message when they come online or go offline, and is generally all round a helpful tool for stalking someone

/roll This is used quite a bit in roleplay. It can be used for the roll of a dice, when used like this: /roll 6 , as it allows you to get a random number from 1 to 6. It is set at 20, as default. Normally, it is used to see if attacks hit a person, or if certain things occur in roleplay, and either side is not content with letting it happen, or want to see how well it happens.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Persona Reset Trick: If you happened to age your character too much, or gave him the wrong race, or set his aging to auto age, or you are not a donator and want to get on your third/fourth character, here is what you do to fix it. You type in /me and hover your mouse over the head that says your character's name. Then, shift and right click on the head to delete it. It will ask you if you want to delete the character. Type in yes. Now, your character is deleted. Type in /me and click on an empty skull (skeleton skull) and create a new persona. Follow the steps, filling in your character's name and age (race, gender, etc) /correctly/, this time, and enjoy! If you want to change character, simply fill in the other character's name, age, race, etc so that it matches the new character.
  • RP with correct grammar, when needed: Don't type i to talk about yourself, or start your sentences with non-captials. Use correct grammar, even when talking as a dwarf, orc or any other accented character. Believe me, it's annoying to RP with someone who uses improper grammar (for some people).
  • Keep RP in the RP chat, and OOC in the OOC chat: Don't type OOC messages in the RP channel, or RP messages in the OOC channel. They are designed to allow you to chat in them and use them for their intended purpose, so please do so. Remember, all it takes to switch between chats is a (( infront of your sentence for LOOC, a /ooc infront of your sentence for OOC, and a /rp infront of your sentence for RP, unless you are already in the RP channel.
  • Know how to Emote: Be aware that emoting is like the bread and butter of RP. New players do tend not to realise this, but typing * before your sentence and giving a nice emote in it before your character says what he/she says is good. An example I can give is this, where I typed *sighs and stretches her arms and legs, groaning "Gah...so bored..."
alC62S6.png

  • Stay in Character: If you play a little girl who has just been born, don't have her suddenly know how to fight with a sword all of a sudden. Additionally, you should pay attention to the subtleties, such as the fact that a mighty warrior orc doesn't sigh, but rather 'lets out a frustrated grunt, glaring at those around him in an irritated manner'. It helps build up your character, helps you keep in character, and lets everyone else know what kind of a person they are.
  • Use [!] to make event-like emotes: Use [!] before you message to make event-like emotes. An example could be this one, where I typed [!]A bird flaps into the room and lands, holding a letter:4X3I8Tk.png
Well...that's about it for my guide. Honestly, I have no idea what I might have missed. There is so much to teach a new person, and I haven't seen another basic guide that goes over what I just did...so I made this.

Please note that I would /love/ to have you guys give me more tips to add onto this guide (I will give credit where credit is due) and I really hope that this guide helps new players in general, as well as slightly older players, too.

All I know is that I would have appreciated a guide like this when I came onto the server, as I was clueless.

/p view [player] This command allows you to view the character card of someone else. For some reason, it only works for me on myself, so if I type /p view hugothechamp , it will show my character card, but if I type any other person's MC name into it, it doesn't seem to work. I am not sure if that is intended, but I'll go with the flow.

Ah so here is the problem, /p view [mcname] only works if the player is online. That should help you out.

Good to know that someone cares about the new players. I don't want to care about them myself, so it feels good that someone else does it for me. +1

Well, I just do what I can to make it easier for new players. It's always good to put yourself in the shoes of a new, clueless player, and help them. Anyway, thanks :D

So...any more tips and tricks you can give? Anything else you would like to add? I want new players to look at this and learn as much as possible, and it will be made better with your feedback, and your ideas :)

Really helpful guide! But I have a question, if I change my emote color do other people see it too? And are the custom emote colors on by default?

Just one quick question, how do you enable custom colors?
