The Role Of Developer In 4.0?

Developers. Oh lordy dem Orange tag Devs.

This is a simple post in hopes that I can garner feedback from. SO with that in mind...

*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

Developers are a staff group here on LOTC. How one becomes a Developer and

what the Developer does is extremely vague but let me semi-clarify that for you all.

Developers are usually, for some reason, retired GMs/Admins who seek to devote their time

to the community but for whatever circumstance can't take on the workload of the Global

moderator position. This isn't to say that the only way to become a Developer is by

becoming a retired GM, that is just how it was done up to this point.

Basically a Developer assists LOTC in whatever way they can whether that be by

giving advice on staff threads (Yes I can still see GM forums) or creating OOC/IC content

for the community.

Personally I tend to lean more towards the creation of content and I think the biggest blessing

I have been given as a Developer and the reason I have not reapplied to become a GM again

is that I have much more freedom with my time and instead of spending hours doing modreqs

I instead can use that time to hop on the 4.0 server and build and I am trusted enough to

have the devs moderation tools at my disposal.

However we are nearing the end of the journey that is 4.0 development and with that I grow

nervous. What am I going to do then? Are the developers going to be phased out? It kind

of seems pointless to have a team that just sits there and to no offense to any of the current

developers but only two of the five of us actually participate in the role of developer, Me & Freya.

(Devs: Freya, Ever, Allenthegreat, RobinDrake, BrandNewKitten)

The reason I am making this thread is to get feedback on what you think the role of the Developer

should be and to brainstorm duties for 4.0. I hope this doesn't come off as mundane but I believe

that community opinion over what a staff position does can often times be crucial to the success

of the direction they take.

TLDR; What do you think Devs should be doing come 4.0? What would you like to see us working on?

In my opinion, the Developer rank was never really needed but it's past that point now, and it's rooted in the server for too long. Some Developers I remember saying that they'd return to being a Global Moderator, so I believe those who want to return to the team should and then have the rank (of Developer) disappear until needed once more.

I wouldn't mind being allowed to keep the tools needed to make dungeons and ruins so I can keep making things after 4.0 is released to keep people amused, since I haven't really had a lot of time to spend on 4.0.

~You could join Shift in creating the special thing Shift will be working on in 4.0.

~You could begin brainstorming ideas for 5.0 landmass and its antagonist.

~You could attempt to guide newer players in 4.0 through the tutorial if they require help understanding it all.

~Develop new ideas on how the server can further extend itself in anyway, such as giving the Media Team ideas for their next project, help players build concept designs for a structure they are about to build in a 'Concept World' that can be easily made. (I already know there is one somewhere on the main server)

~Simply relax and have fun on the server or Dev. Simply because the job is done, doesn't mean you fully have to stop when in the future, there's sure to be another job just like it.  You could stay with the Dev. Server for awhile and make dungeons and megabuilds for 5.0, just keep the same mindset you had when making 4.0 and you should feel alright.

There's no real drawback to letting developers have a limited version of op so they can do things like make dungeons, like freya said, and they could be custodians, so to speak, repairing landscars if and when they occur so that the land looks fresh.

I agree entirely on this, especially the repairing of landscars.  Who better to fix the landscape than the people who helped make it in the first place, eh?

I'll take you guys under my wing if you want. The developers can help the ET tremendously as we lack enough ops with free time.

Basically you would continue your role as developers, just with smaller projects instead of making a new map.

Freya, why not join the ET as a builder and actor?

It's not like you would be denied.

The thing is though, a Developer is someone who assists in the development of the server. If this is true, then there should be no need for them to keep said title after 4.0. We shouldn't just say, "Oh we'll have them for 5.0" when we should really be going for 4.0 to last as long as we can without considering a new map change. That being said, I really don't think that Developers should get more than other players and that's only because there is no need for it. You don't need special perms to help new players, if they want to continue helping and assist the Event Team, then they should join the Global Moderator team once more. All I am saying is, having a team which is a watered down version of OP is wasted potential that could be put somewhere else.

Just change the title or something, it's not really a big deal. Op isn't a finite resource.

Developers have the obvious task of developing, which means they have to assist in various tasks towards that goal of developing a server. Their judgement rises above that of a GM because their specific job is geared toward the development of a new map/plugin suggestion/exc,

After a server/map has been developed it's the developers jobs (If the job is still around) to continue to develop content for players. Since they're somewhat of a retired GM, and their position isn't clearly defined, they could be semi-tech teams, ET members exc. Helping where help is needed. For that purpose they can help any ET member with events if needed, or help code things for the server.

I think the best thing you can do after 4.0 launches in addition to helping other teams at your leisure, it to look at suggestions given by players, or help tweak the system. If something in game isn't completely balanced, then it is partly your job to help fix it by coming up with a solution to the issue, then redirecting it to the tech team, or admins.

P.S. I'd love to become a developer but I feel I lack the charisma and "Name" needed to become one, and given there is no direct way of applying to become a developer, you simply have to ask, yet asking doesn't quite prove your worth at all :/

I've always seen developer as more of an honorary title/position on LotC. The contribution to the server a Dev makes is far more defined by the individual rather than the dark orange tag they bear.

Maybe the Dev. rank can become like the Guide. It can handle the questions of newbies!
