Clan Oknir

"Forever Will We Protect"

((This clan is based around the pagan human culture, created by MajesticOwyn. It is inspired by Celtic and Norse Mythology, if curious about anything, please consult the Gorundyr lore post in my signature.))

The Clan Creation Legend

Clan Oknir is an ancient clan, dating back to when the Gods bestowed life onto mankind. Though they had no written history of this time, the members of the clan pass down a very old legend. This legend follows the story of Horas Oknir, savior and hero of Clan Oknir.

When life was given to mankind Oknar, the god of craftsmen and stone allowed a few devout humans to build a village at the base of his mountain. When Maratsu was destroyed and his body put under the Heart Tree, a tomb was created to honor this fallen god. The tomb was guarded by demons and threatened the people of the village. So the warriors gathered and set out to purge the tomb. Upon arriving they found an ancient club; it is a gnarled root from the Heart Tree. When the warriors brought this weapon home Maratsu's corruption followed. Slowly the corruption seeped from the club into the minds of the people, it drove them mad, and eventually forced them to take action against Oknar, who loved and blessed them. The night before the corrupted warriors scaled the mountain, Oknar's champion Horas had a terrible dream of the coming events. He climbed the mountain early the next morning and waited, sure enough the corrupted warriors found their way to the summit. Oknar's cave was right in front of them, however Horas stood in there way. They blindly charged him, long did they fight, Horas taking many wounds but not a single man could make it past him. When all had fallen Horas bellowed at the top of his lungs and fainted, the corrupted club and bodies of all the Gorundyr at his feet. Upon hearing this Oknar went outside and found Horas and the corrupted club, in one hand he held Horas, and in the other he held the club. Oknar blessed them both and set them down safety at the bottom of the mountain.

When Horas woke up he was gripping the club, no longer corrupt, now a powerful weapon blessed by the god. Horas knew he had to thank Oknar somehow, he ventured around Savaar, gathering men and women who would follow him. When he and his flock returned they built a village on top of the old one and named it Oknarus, land of the devout. In the following years Horas married and had children, thus Clan Oknir was born. Forever have they been the guardians of the mountains and the most devout of Oknar. With his blessing they gather strong stone for their buildings and ore for their weapons.

The Destruction of Oknarus

Many years after the death of Horas, Clan Oknir was attacked by another clan because they desired to have the club themselves. In the midst of this war Oknarus was sacked and much of the city burned, thankfully the Ritual House survived and within it the club. The war between the two clans lasted for many generations, both equally matched in power and money.

However after the fall of Oknarus Clan Oknir had all but given up. A young warrior from house Oknir, Tormud fought in the shieldwall of his Warband. His father Caelin Oknir, chieftain of the clan ordered him to retrieve and safeguard Horas' ancient club. Tormud sprinted through the ruined city and secured the club, for no one had tried to steal it, fearing the wrath of Oknar. Caelin knew that with this club in their shieldwall, the strength and might of Oknar flowed through their shields. The next day both clans gathered on the plains outside of Oknarus, ready to finish this war, and fight to the last man. Caelin ordered the Warband to form a defensive square, Tormud stood in the center holding Horas' club and chanting widly to Oknar. The rival clan charged and soon surrounded Clan Oknir's Warband, all hope had seemed lost. The Warband began to faulter, the men being chipped away slowly; Caelin losing hope, begged for Oknar to bless them with victory. Loud did Tormud scream as he continued to chant, then suddenly the earth gave way, heaving and shaking every last man to his core. Then all at once the men realized this was done by Oknar and quickly rose up continuing the fight, breaking rank and stepping over the men they slaughtered. The battle was won quickly after, the earth continued shaking, and the enemy to shocked and frightened to form a resistance.

That night Clan Oknir stood triumphant, though terribly shaken; their city destroyed, their people killed, and their Warband all but slaughtered. The Clan slowly broke apart, men and women seeking new homes and lands. Only the Oknir family remained and they all scaled the mountain of Oknar one last time, carrying Horas' ancient club with them. When they arrived they set the club at the entrance of Oknar's cave, daring not to go in, and simply left, for they believed greedy men would continue to wage war over it.

Surviving the Scourge

After the fall of Oknarus, Clan Oknir was all but destroyed, fortunately taken in by a neighboring clan. All went smoothly and peace was kept until the "Dark Ones" attacked. The Gorundyric preists named then followers of Maratsu, the remaining Gorundyr fled south to the great Cloud Temple. There they learned the dark beings were called Scourge, together all the Gorundyr people went through a large portal, to a new a safe world. There the clans marched north, ultimately splitting off, continuing their old ways.

Clan Traditions

Coming of Age

The coming of age was a very important part of Gorundyr culture. It was the staging point for young warriors to finally prove themselves to their entire clan.

Doing this was no easy task, a young warrior would have to make a massive pilgrimage. They had to do so completely alone, all warriors must do this separately. By visiting everyone of the God's shrines they prove themselves their faith and courage.

When they return home they must finish this journey by visiting there Ritual House and speaking with the Gods. By doing so they are excepted into their Warband and society, if a warrior fails he he cast out and shunned.

Ritual House

All Clans have a Ritual House which act as a sacred place to commune with the gods. Each temple houses the Gorunprestr and their servants. The inside of the ritual house is often undecorated and houses the histories of the Gorundyr and the respective clan in the form of tapestries and other written forms. Outside the building would often be much more detailed; intricate carvings, bright decorations, and seating arrangements. All sacrifices were held outside and would be followed with a night of feasting and recreation.

The Shields of Stone

The Shields of Stone were named by their current chieftain Tormud, because of their strong devotion to Oknar, as well as their battle prowess. The Warband is all about standing ground and letting the enemy make the first move, their formations showing this. The Shields of Stone favor the shieldwall, like all common Warbands, but unlike most they also commonly use a defensive square, they then put their skirmishers inside this square.

The warriors of the Shields of Stone fight for money, land, and resources. Someone could buy the services of this Warband, but they are no mere mercenaries, they fight for glory and honor. This Warband follows a strict code of discipline, ever reinforcing their legendary ability to never flee or waver in battle.

The equipment the warriors bring varies between each solider, but like most Gorundyr they use hand axes, swords, spears, sometimes larger bastard swords. Almost every soldier uses a large round wooden shield covered in hide, in the center lies a metal boss for protection. These shields are held and connected by a small strap, making them very defensive as well as offensive. Warriors decorate their personal shield differently, usually with a god they favor, or a symbol of their family. Very rarely you will see men using no shield at all, wielding two axes or swords; Clan Oknir calls these men Berserkers. A more common sight then Berserkers would be skirmishers, such as archers or even spear throwers, these light troops stand behind the shield wall and throw projectiles.

The men of this Warband armor themselves with boiled leather, chainmail, and very rarely platemail. Leather is worn by every warrior, offering decent protection, making them agile and light. Chainmail is more rare, worn by the richer; offers more protection and makes them just as light as the leather counterpart. Platemail however is worn by the very few, made of iron, making them very powerful.

As the cold intensifies and the crops stop growing altogether Clan Oknir gathers in their Ritual House. Chieftain Tormud Oknir speaks first, such is his right as leader of the Clan. "We have come here this night to discuss the future of the Gorundyr people." "I will be taking our people to speak with Clan Orvar." "All willing, able bodied men and women may join me, the rest will stay here and protect the village." With no one to speak against him they prepare to leave.  A few men and women leave with Tormud Oknir, heading towards the last known location of Clan Orvar.

"This is most concerning, we must see if these tribesmen will convert to the Creator and accept the never-ending rays of His Most Holy Light."

"With the heretic Chivay ruler no longer there to harbor enemies o' the Faith, it'll be high time to give these pagans an ultimatum: convert, or die by the BLAD."
