The Mages Guild is the dominant institution for the training and study of Arcane Magic. Watched over by the Arch-Mages, the Guild seeks out those who they consider magically sensitive and train them within their mysterious art. Perhaps being one of the oldest factions in existence, the Guild keeps a persistent secretive aura about them due to their ancient and “dark” history. Despite their past they continue to act as one of the only major academies for aspiring Arcanists. Little is known of the guild at any one time, so much so that the members often know little more than the assurance of their individual membership.

All of existence is a great plane that balances upon a far smaller sphere. Actions that put weight upon one end will suffer the inverse action swinging in equal opposing force. It is an unseen calling for the trusted few to prevent such shifts from leading to calamity. For without the balance, there remains not a thing.

The Order of Mages

We are the Mages Guild; first tasked with keeping this balance since the days when magic was born. Though unnoticed we have remained watchful. Though overlooked we have contributed in secret. Though misunderstood our purpose remains.

  • The Mages Guild takes action against such things that threaten the balance.

  • The Mages Guild are wise and experienced in magic, they will intervene when individuals are seen using magic incorrectly, or with dangerous intents that may threaten the balance.

  • The Mages Guild will not hide away their experience, but teach others to wield magic skillfully.

  • The Mages Guild operates not for personal, commercial or political gain.

Those who seek magic and are gifted with a mind to understand its secrets, and a soul that carries its responsibilities with gravity, may find their answers. We may be contacted at any of our Embassy’s in pursuit of this seeking, or if you wish to align with our recent endeavours. Mages will choose for themselves the willing pupils whom they deem worthy of undertaking an apprenticeship. But learn to ask with your actions, instead of with your words. For The Mages Guild is not showy with magic, nor will we willingly equip the fool with a means to injure himself and others. But if you prove the desire in your heart you shall be satisfied.

The Mage Code of Conduct

  • A mage shall not use their magic to serve purposes that contradict that of the institution and it’s leaders. Magic is your gift, maintaining balance is your duty. Selfish pursuits will be punished.

  • A mage shall not assault another member of the institution, unless agreed upon beforehand between the two, or if the victim is conducting actions that would cause damage to the Institution and it’s purposes.

  • A mage of the institution must follow the orders set before them by their respective authority, unless they consider such actions to be harmful of the institution, or disrupting the balance.

  • A graduated mage must carry their responsibilities with gravity, knowing that they represent not only themselves, but the Guild as a whole, and all practitioners of magic.

  • Any mage identified as operating as a rogue will be disbanded from the guild, banished from its facilities and from communication with its members, and most likely killed for good measure.

  • A mage who does not carry the responsibilities of magic is not a mage at all.

Contacting The Guild

Our Guild location is not a place anyone can walk into, nor are stray visitors welcome. Those who seek us may make contact at one of our Embassy locations, or through a known Mage of the Guild. Notifications of your intentions to join with the Mages Guild can be left with us for perusal. ((In-character books are preferred))

  • Those seeking to become an apprentice will be watched, and if deemed adequate, a mage will approach them to become their teacher. We have great reason to be skeptical. Successful apprentices may later become a member of our Order and take upon themselves the mantle of magic.
  • Those who seek us for other means are best speaking to an ArchMage or GuildMaster at one of our Embassies or inside our Guild Tower, if such is possible. This includes information of the ill-use of magic, updates on previously conversed events, circumstances that may lead to a shift in the balance.

All written correspondence is graciously accepted. Please state your intentions clearly, and make it simple enough to contact you, should that be appropriate. ((MC name and Timezone too please))

((This forum can be used if In Character attempts to contact us are unsuccessful. But we would rather keep it in-game whenever possible))

Elindor nods at the parchment, seeing that his name now lays upon its face.

"Let all who flippantly misuse magic, or those who walk the darker path with it be forewarned. We will find you."

He then puts up an additional note upon it, and at all Embassy locations:

All information is gratefully accepted.

Whether about the Undead, Magic users who need dealing with, or the quest for apprenticeship.

((I can be contacted directly. Though I am not the best to contact for apprenticeship, but can likely help on that too))

The following message is left in the Mages' Guild Embassy in Annil'sul, penned in a flowing script with what appears to be dark resin.

To the esteemed Master of the Guild of Mages--

I have heard tell of your establishment and am awed by your dedication to the magical arts. If it is convenient and agreeable to the aforementioned Guild, I would like to become an apprentice in Hydromancy and learn magic from a master of the art. My reasons for applying are ranked, in order of relative importance to myself, thusly:

     1. To Learn: I have received an education on matters of the mundane, yet I still seek more knowledge. In my travels through Athera in the last seed alone, I have seen countless wonders and magical phenomena. For example, just yesterday I laid eyes upon a man who was swimming up a waterfall (though I know not whether the man or the waterfall was enchanted). To investigate such magical loci would be an honor and a fine end unto itself.

     2. To Protect: As one of the Mali'Fenn, I am accustomed to much colder climes than most, and this world presents to me many dangers of fire and heat. The ability to evoke water and ice would hopefully obstruct such dangers. Moreover, I have witnessed several fights break out on the streets. The evocation of ice walls would be a safeguard against bandits, brigands, and the marauding undead.

     3. To Join: Magical practitioners are, for the most part, few and far between. Joining a community of mages (as opposed to seeking out an individual practitioner) would allow me to interact and communicate with a large group of skilled and wise individuals.

My qualifications follow in the same manner:

     1. Though I have lived most of my life in relative isolation far to the north, I was well-educated and believe that I can learn quickly.

     2. I have already taken the liberty of purchasing a primer on Hydromancy, which I have studied in my spare time. Although the actual ability to evoke water evades me, I believe that I understand the underlying theory.

     3. Having lived in the North, I have had a close relationship with ice and snow all my life. I believe that I understand more or less completely mundane water in the solid form.

((4. My skin has an awesome snowflake design on it.))

I have nothing to offer you but my absolute service and devotion to the Guild and its principles. I leave this application in your capable hands with the knowledge that you will make the right decision, whatever that may be. If you should see fit to contact me, my current residence is at the Uuthlini Inn in Annil'sul.

                                            --Sincerely and Respectfully,

                                                                       Adran Frosthand

((Sorry for making you read such a long application, but it's supposed to be in character. Also, my Minecraft username is creeperslayer779.))

A note written in flowing script is left at the guilds embassy.

"Upon returning to the guild after seeking more books to add to my private collection it would seem someone has once again changed the 'locks' to the door. I would be most grateful if I where once again granted access to the guild hall"

((IGN: ace134. I can help teach some apprentices if need be))

"This is written to the Mages Guild. If this letter is misplaced, please re-direct it to the guild if possible. Thank you.

Karin'ayla Archmage Haadi,

I have written this letter in interest of joining the Mages Guild. I am not new to magic, however my knowledge on it isn't too lengthy, and I wish to expand it. I am currently mastering all kinetics. Please return my bird to the Haleun'or avery, I will await your reply.

Elindor sits at a maple desk with a small candle hanging from an angled metal frame. He picks up some of Haadi's mail and holds it before the candle to read the contents without marking the seal. He appreciates this one about a kinetic expert and stands upright at the desk to perform his old-man calisthenics, letter in hand. Just a few more Rocky montages and he'll be a master too. Whether or not Haadi will ever receive the notice of interest remains unclear.

Guild Announcement

------*~*+*~*------

It is with regret today that we announce the dismissal of two of our Archmagi.

Elindor

Succumbing to illness from old age, it was with great reluctance that our dear friend was persuaded into retirement. His departure saddens all the guild, and his long service to us is duly noted.

Kalameet Izalith

His disappearance is upsetting and we wish that wherever he may be that he is safe and at peace. Kalameet's deeds and workings for the Guild shall not be forgotten and his name shall forever linger in our hearts and minds. Should he one day decide to return or find his way back to us, he shall be welcomed with open arms.

As many of you may have guessed, this does leave both Archmages positions open, though any expressing desire for the position will undergo a strict screening process. Additionally, as the only acting Archmage, I, Haadi Mubdee, will be doing some searching of my own for suitable candidates for the position, as well as further guild advancements and a revival process.

I hope to see all of you whom are still loyal to this guild again soon.

That is all. We wish you all a splendid day and hope your studies and lessons are going well.

-Archmage Haadi

Guild Announcement

------*~*+*~*------

Again, we must join together as one to honor the dismissal and departure of yet another Archmage.

Silvos Sythaerin

His time as a leader was short, though his devotion to the guild in the past will never be forgotten. May he find happiness in whatever life brings him next.

We must also announce on this day the departure of a Guildmaster.

Diana

With a heart burning like fire, she strived to prove herself to the Archmagi, and proved herself she did. Promoted to the position of Guildmaster in a matter of only months, Diana excelled at her job and was loyal to the very end; her choice to withdraw herself from her position. Her time, too, was rather short - she shall be remembered.

---

With all the bad news also comes some good. A fresh face has been chosen for the position of Archmage in Silvos' place.

Mel

She may not be as well known among magi as some previous holders of the title, though it can be assured that she is cut out for her position. In her time as Archmage she's proven to be a valuable asset, and a hard worker.
