Aesterwald 246 Share Posted December 10, 2014 The Aulician Book Listing of all Landed Titles, Nobility, Gentry, and overall summarization of the Apostolic Kingdom of Aesterwald Preface One might asks itself, 'What truly is Aesterwald?' or 'What is the reason for Aesterwald's existence?'. Although I myself should not even attempt to answer these broad questions in the length of this small introduction, I shall be the fool and try. Aesterwald is the idea of the unified North, the actual 'North' being the lands North of the Great River. Of course, this is nothing revolutionary, as the idea of a 'kingdom of the north' can be traced all the way back to Horen's eldest son, King Harren I. Regardless, that is, well, one of the many reasons, though I am sure the politics of such does not interest to mind. So, with multiple writers and editors, including myself, Prince Otto von Rovin, we write this novel in hopes of showing the citizenry what Aesterwald truly is, not in just the verbal sense, but the spiritual and ultimate fraternal bonding that binds Aesterwald into one of the most prosperous northern kingdoms since King Harren, son of Horen. Now, this novelette contains a swath of information regarding government, economy, religion, and otherwise assortment of topics that any man may wish to know. Deus Magnus, Otto von Rovin, Prince of Aesterwald __________________________________________________________________________________ History of the Apostolic Kingdom of Aesterwald The actual Apostolic Kingdom of Aesterwald has had a short history in the sense of the actual history of the world, being founded a near twenty years ago. However, this detailed history will not just cover those short years, but how the Apostolic Kingdom of Aesterwald came to be. It all began during the end of the Reign of Emperor Siegmund Carrion, only emperor of the Second Empire. Jack von Rovin, later called Frederick, was approached by the current High Pontiff, Lucien II, a bastard of House de Varodyr. The Church itself had suffered greatly since the Exodus, most priests and holy men left to the shores of Aeldin which left the Mother Church defenseless and weak. Jack von Rovin, at the time, led a small band of warriors, made up mainly of northerners, to which were quite pious compared to the other bands serving Oren at the time. The High Pontiff saw this and asked Jack to create a new order that would protect the Church of outside threat and inside threat, a request that Jack von Rovin gladly agreed on. And so, the infamous Order of Saint Lucien was created, with Jack von Rovin as its Grandmaster, the extremely young Voron von Rovin as his Grand Commander, and other faces such as the young Rosencrantz as its Grand Prior, the easterner Raigeki as its Knight Commander, and the adunian Rymeul as its Grand Chancellor. The Order would fight in numerous wars, including the War of the Golden Lance, the Second Great War, and the Rusko-Lucienist War. Humanity, with the combined might of the Order of Saint Lucien and King Heinrik’s own men, such as the Order of the Decterum and countless levies, was beginning to finally regain its foothold amongst the races. However, not everything good will last. Tensions between the Raevir fanatics and the men of the Order of Saint Lucien reached a breaking point, leading to multiple minor skirmishes and raids on both sides. The actual war itself ended the Battle of Savoie Fields, which led to the decisive victory for the men of the Order of Saint Lucien. However, it did not stop there. King Heinrik, a few months after the Battle of Savoie Fields, died in battle against the Dwarven forces, leaving Oren without an heir. But, just as the carrion crows are, a Carrion cousin came to claim the throne from across the sea. Franz Joseph Carrion was a figure not liked by the current High Pontiff, High Pontiff Regulus, to which he refused to coronate him, as Franz was known for cowardice and greed. Franz, wanting to solidify his corrupting hold upon the realm of man, dressed a lowly priest as the High Pontiff in order to have him coronated. Order men from the Order of Saint Lucien stood in the crowd, seeing such a horrendous sight, a clear sign of hate and disrespect against the Holy Father. Led by the Grandmaster Jack von Rovin and Ser Rymeul, the small muster of men demanded that the false Pontiff be taken into custody and that Franz answer for his crimes. Men are sinners, of course, so Franz denied this and the men of the Order of Saint Lucien attacked. The false Pontiff was killed in the fight by the men of the Order of Saint Lucien but had to retreat, as with the overwhelming forces in the Carrion Keep. Franz, instead of apologising and seeking peace for his sins, crowned an Anti-Pontiff to dishonor the Holy Father and the faithful. Some men under the rule of Franz saw the sin of his ways, including the leader of the Decterum, Ser Aildred of House Ruthern. With the combined forces of Grandmaster Jack von Rovin and Marshall Aildred of the Decterum, they led an attack upon the Carrion keep, executing the sinful Franz and his debauchery of a council. However, the force was not able to take the Carrion’s last stronghold, Mount Augustus, and led to the eventual resurgence of House Carrion years later. With the Carrions deposed, a vision of the Exalted Emperor Godfrey appeared from the heavens, prophesying the return of a new Emperor, Peter of Chivay. And so, the men of the old White Rose returned upon the shores of their homeland, including the King of Kaedrin, King Peter Chivay, his nephew Robert Chivay, and countless knights and Marked men. The Order of Saint Lucien, along with other rebels against the rule of the Carrions, swore their swords to the new Emperor of Mankind, leading to the Third Empire of Mankind. As mentioned that Mount Augustus was not taken, the Carrion worm soon infested itself within the Sparrow Dynasty. The hypocritical Father Vasily convinced Robert to remove the High Pontiff and declare church under state. The Order of Saint Lucien, thanks to the Decree of Disbandment, was disbanded and the men splintered apart. Many of the order men stayed loyal to Jack von Rovin and his son, Voron von Rovin. Voron, with many of the Order of Saint Lucien, joined and formed the backbone of the short-lived Imperial Army. Voron, however, grew wary of the Imperial Army, as talks of betrayal soon reached his ears. As his time in the army was over, he was granted land north of the Great River, forming the Markgraf of Vanderfell, a border county of the Third Empire. The rumors that Voron were true, as the Imperial Army betrayed Emperor Robert and overthrew House of Chivay, placing House Carrion back on the throne. Jack von Rovin left to Vanderfell, telling Voron of this great betrayal. After much talk with father and son, it was decided. Vanderfell would not stay with the Carrion-ruled Empire. And so, with the Archbishop crowning Jack von Rovin ‘King of the Vanders’, Jack took up the name King Frederick I, the first king of Aesterwald. Three years passed, Aesterwald growing to obtain the entire north, with the Polarians swearing under the King Jack von Rovin. With the assistance of Faiz of Kharadeen, alliances formed between the many nations of Athera. However, the Emperor Tobias Carrion sat upon a hungry throne, wanting to reclaim Aesterwald which has remained independent since the Carrion’s retaking of the throne. Emperor Tobias sent an ultimatum, to which King Jack von Rovin refused outright. War began, to which Aesterwald and the Empire led into a bloodless struggle. No battle was fought between the two nations, for this war was merely fought in pen and paper. King Frederick, a year into the war, died of poisoning, to which his son Voron ascended to the throne. Voron was not war-supporting like his father, for Voron was a more intrigued minded man of Waldenia. He took to private meeting with Tobias, and signed a pact to agree to swear underneath the Empire, a move which angered many men of Aesterwald and would cause unrest for years to come. It would take five years for the other lords of the Empire to realize why Aesterwald did not wish to be under the crow. When Maric of Renatus raised his banners in rebellion against Emperor Tobias, Aesterwald took the side of the rebels to dismantle the Empire. And so, at the decisive victory at Angren, the rebels won, with the crows retreating back to Petrus to lick their wounds. Nonetheless, the state `who arose from the former Order of Saint Lucien is loyal to its roots and entrusts themselves in the papacy. Religious Tolerance Unlike the remainder of the Empire of Oren the Konigreich has a peculiar tolerance to heretics and houses various persons within their realm who are devout followers of Clericism. Although they will not tolerate open worship of any differing faiths within their cities but will allow private worship. __________________________________________________________________________________ Artisanship & Economy Economy The Economy is headed by the Lord Kastellan who is in charge of taxation as well as distribution of homes and lands within Aesterwald. The Order of the Black Eagle is led by the incorruptible Lord Constable, or called Lord Wachtmeister in the tongue of High Marian, who leads the men of the Aesterwald through thick and thin, reaching the all amounted glory and victory in the name of Aesterwald and their King. The current LORD KANZLER is Otto von Schniepp. The LORD KASTELLAN manages the formal estates of the King and the overall realm under the banner of the Black Eagle. He or she serves as Burgher (Maer) of the capital city, instructed to create Vanderfell into a true, royal city. The current LORD KASTELLAN is Rilkor von Niwarsay. The LORD KORREKTOR of Aesterwald overlooks all noble and royal affairs, keeping in check the powers of nobility and peasantry. It is also tasked in the management of the Kingdom’s merchant class, ensuring economical freedom in the realm. The current LORD KORREKTOR is Ser Edward II. of House Winter. The PAPAL LEGATE, chosen from priests of the Archbishopric of Aesterwald, is the chief religious and spiritual advisor to the King. He maintains unity with the Church of the Canon, entrusted to enforce its teaching to minimize the spreading of heresy. The current PAPAL LEGATE is Bishop Rellin of Vanderfell. The COURT WIZARD, or formally called the GERICHT ZAUBERER, the the arcane advisor and expert in the Waldenian Court. The COURT WIZARD is charged to stopping apostate mages and necromancers that cause trouble and harm within the borders of Aesterwald. The current COURT WIZARD is Ser Arhadir of House Roke. The PRIVY SEAL of Aesterwald is the keeper of law and chief scribe for the King of Aesterwald. It is the PRIVY SEAL'S duty to properly sign and seal all royal documents when the King is unable.
