Why Is Athera Bad?

So, there have been a lot of topics recently about a new map and making 5.0 and what people want to see and whatnot. Lots of people seem to think that Athera is a bad map and that we need to move onto 5.0. The question I'm asking, though, is why? What exactly is it about Athera that you don't like and makes you want to move? What would you like, specifically, to see in a new map to make it better? Personally, I think that a map change at the moment is a decent idea, though a lot of people seem to just say 'Athera is bad' and not explain why they think it's bad. Thus, this thread is for answering the two questions I asked.

tl;dr - Why specifically is Athera bad and what can be done to make 5.0 better? (Or 4.0 if its something we can change that's not innate to the map, ie, fast travel). Post your responses below.

4.0 has no close freebuild, hardly any plots where RP should be, and is just built horribly.

It was nice before anyone moved in. It was a beauty to behold, everything was great as is. And that is the keyword, "as is". When people came and started building, it was **** smeared over a white canvas. I don't think Athera was designed in the mind that players will come and build garbage on it.

All this, but I wouldn't say it was built horribly.

My main problem with the map is that it's so linear, with very little reason to explore. Why go out and explore when all of the RP is centralized around the main road? It's very little spread out, which just makes it feel so small. Then all of that and followed by numerous small, ugly forts spread around the main road and etc.

Personally, I think the next map should resemble Aegis and/or Anthos. How everything was very immersive and spread out perfectly.

As stated, Athera doesn't have close enough free build plots to spawn. The main road is lined with pointless and unused plots/builds. The map itself is beautiful but lacking in player creativity, I guess.

I don't think we need a 5.0. I think we need something like Elysium. Bigger, but not too much, map. Create specific plots/areas for regions, make a few et builds for events, and then make the rest free build. So basically a 4.5. Spread those nation capitals all around the map so players have a reason to explore, while still having room to build

Too bunched together, to small, doesnt feel like a world feels like a neighborhood, and finally the flipping nations are waaaaayu to close to each other.

I've explored the whole realm more than three times. It feels so small and tiny.

Edit: No need for 5.0; 4.0 is still not that old to be moving on that quick. Be grateful, people!

I personally think the problem is that we keep building maps with the past maps in mind.

Nalatac has it right. We should do something new.

Although I would like to see something like Asulon, even if I wasn't there, it sounds like it was amazing.

First two points I agree with. Last point I think needs more explanation, like what Sosa said down here. v

I agree with the linear point. In my mind one of the worst parts of Athera's design is the Stone Road that curls in a very tiny part of the map, with a nearly impassable mountain range separating the entire southern half of the continent.

The small forts were created by players though, that's not something wrong with the map and something that can't be fixed unless we don't let normal players build. (I also wouldn't call them ugly I think they look pretty aesthetically pleasing for Pvp forts).

What about Aegis and Anthos did you like? What do you mean by 'immersive and spread out peacefully'?

I don't quite understand this, I'm afraid. Every map will have players building on it, and not all players are good builders. It seems most people would like there to be more freebuild, more plots, more player-created stuff. But if player-created stuff is ugly and people complain about things being ugly, how can we solve this problem? I have a few ideas but I'm curious to hear yours first.

In the feedback section of the thread I adress the issues of Athera.

Aye, this is my favorite 5.0 suggestion/idea thread by far. Well done, nice work. +1

Yes, we need more plots close to spawn, and we have no freebuild areas near spawn. Main road is lined with plots/builds that aren't pointless and unused from what I've seen, just used by groups or people for themselves, there are no main road Rp hubs anymore. (Standing inn was an Rp hub and people didn't like it for some reason). Player creativity being at fault doesn't seem like something you can blame the map for though, no? Going to a new map won't fix anything if the issue is player creativity and we keep the same players.

Thank you for elaborating on what you meant by 'something like Elysium.' Most people say what map they want it to be like but not what that actually means for those that aren't in the same brain as they are.

Too bunched together, to small, doesnt feel like a world feels like a neighborhood, and finally the flipping nations are waaaaayu to close to each other.

I agree I think the 'used' part of the map is far too small. There is actually a lot more map to Athera down south but its uninhabited, mainly due to the Stone Road's placement and the impassable mountains that shut the south off, I believe.

I've explored the whole realm more than three times. It feels so small and tiny.

I agree its too small, we /can/ actually fix that without moving to 5.0 though moving to 5.0 is a possibility.

BRING US BACK TO ASULON

What about Asulon did you like, specifically, that was exclusive to the map itself?

and

What about Asulon did you like in terms of plugins and policies and all that?

I personally think the problem is that we keep building maps with the past maps in mind.

I agree with this statement. I like pfmvaz' 5.0 suggestion thread, it's something we should see more of instead of just 'bring back Asulon' (with no explanation what that means).

Although I would like to see something like Asulon, even if I wasn't there, it sounds like it was amazing.

Nostalgia affects people's minds, I think. That, and the belief that a map change = a change in policy which it does not. I don't think Asulon's physical map was that great, but I think the staff policies active during Asulon were good.

I contest the statement that a new map is necessary to fix any problem with Athera. New maps are just a massive drain on resources and will to RP for a few months, then we get a new map crippled by overambition for half a year then people start clamouring for a new one to "fix everything".

Anything we want to improve we can improve on Athera.

Yup! Yup, yup, yup! Improving on Athera best way to go in my opinion.
